Splendors of Italy Tour May 18 th to 29 th, 2018 11 nights 12 days Summary Itinerary Friday, May 18 th Day 1 Depart Canada Depart from your Maritime city on your overnight flight to Venice via Toronto or Montreal. Try and get some sleep before your morning arrival in Venice. Saturday, May 19 th Day 2 Arrive Venice and City Tour Welcome to Venice. We will transfer to our hotel and have lunch (included). We will take a boat transfer to the historic center and have a two-hour guided tour including a visit to St. Mark s Basilica. After the tour, we will return to the hotel and check-in. Time to freshen up before dinner at the hotel. (L, D) Hotel: Villa Foscarini or similar (2 nights) Sunday, May 20 th Day 3 Venice Island Tour Enjoy complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel. Today we will have a private boat transfer to the Venice Islands. We will have a guided tour of the Venetian Islands (Burano & Murano). Also included is a visit to the world famous Murano Glass Factory. The afternoon is free to explore Venice on your own. Meet the group in the evening for dinner at a local restaurant in Venice. Monday, May 21 st Day 4 Montecatini Enjoy complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel. Check out and depart for Verona. You will have a free morning to explore on your own the beautiful city of Verona. Three of Shakespeare s plays are set in Verona including Romeo and Juliet. Your Travel Director will be available for suggestions on how to spend your morning. After lunch, we depart for Montecatini. Tuesday, May 22 nd Day 5 Siena and San Gimignano Enjoy complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel. Depart for Siena for a two-hour guided tour. See the Piazza del Campo, scene of the celebrated annual Palio horse race, and the stunning marble Cathedral which dominates the town. We will then depart to explore San Gimignano on your own. Known as the medieval Manhattan, this city is famed for its ring of towers which can be seen several kilometres from town. Shop for locally-produced delicacies and hand-painted Tuscan pottery or wander the beautiful streets. We will also have a wine tasting experience in a local cantina this afternoon before we return to Montecatini and dinner on at the hotel. Wednesday, May 23 rd Day 6 Florence Enjoy complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel. We depart for Florence for a three-hour guided tour for a fascinating account of the history of Renaissance Florence during your walking tour. View the Ponte Vecchio Bridge, one of the city s most famous landmarks and visit the Academia Gallery to see the statue of David. Lunch and free time to explore. Return departure for Montecatini and dinner at the hotel tonight. Thursday, May 24 th Day 7 Cinque Terre Enjoy complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel. Depart for Cinque Terre and explore on your own using a boat to get from town to town. Cinque Terre (translation: five towns) is a string of five fishing villages perched high on the Italian Riviera and is notable for its beauty. Over centuries, people have carefully built terraces to cultivate grapes and olives on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the Mediterranean Sea. On the way back to Montecatini, we will stop in Agriturismo Il Poggio for a visit of vineyard and oil factory, wine tasting and dinner. Return to Montecatini. Friday, May 25 th Day 8 Carrara - Pisa - Lucca Enjoy complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel. Depart for Carrara for a guide tour of Frantiscritti Marble Quarry. The Fantiscritti Marble Quarry is where Michelangelo spent months selecting the marble he'd use. The David marble slab came from this quarry, though it was selected by someone else decades earlier and later discarded as useless until Michelangelo decided otherwise. This afternoon we visit the town of Pisa for lunch and free time to explore on your own. Later this afternoon we visit the old town of Lucca. You will have free time to explore and have dinner on your own at a local restaurant. Hidden behind imposing Renaissance walls, its cobbled streets, handsome piazzas, and shady promenades make it a perfect destination to explore by foot. Return to Montecatini. Saturday, May 26 th Day 9 Frascati (Rome) Enjoy complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel. We check out and depart for Frascati. On the way we stop in Orvieto for panoramic visit. Umbria's grand hill town, Orvieto, is just off the freeway between Florence and Rome, with three popular claims to fame (cathedral, Classico wine, and ceramics). Arrive at our host hotel in Frascati outside Rome. We will have dinner at the hotel tonight. Hotel: Grand Hotel Villa Toscolana or similar (3 nights) Sunday, May 27 th Day 10 Tour Rome Enjoy complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel. This morning we travel to St. Peters Square for the Papal Blessing. If the Pope is in Rome, he will appear from the window of his apartment where he gives a short speech followed by the Angelus and impart the Apostolic Blessing at the end of the prayer. This afternoon we will have three-hour guided tour of Monumental Rome including public Squares, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Piazza Navona. Dinner is on your own tonight. (B) Monday, May 28 th Day 11 Tour Rome Enjoy complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel. This morning we will have a four-hour Imperial Rome guided tour including St. Peter in Chains Church, Coliseum, Roman Forum, and Venice Square. This afternoon is free to explore Rome on your own. Tonight we will have a Farewell Dinner with wine at a local winery. Great way to finish your time in Italy. Tuesday, May 29 th Day 12 Fly Home Enjoy complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel. We check out and depart for the airport. We board our Air Canada flight home with a connection in Toronto or Montreal.
