The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) The world-class Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, was opened in 2008, with direct flights to important international destinations, Hyderabad, and India, have never been so accessible. The RGIA, though new, already has a number of feathers in its cap. From being rated the No. 1 airport in the world (in the 5-15 million passenger category), to being ranked 5th worldwide (in the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) annual survey by the Airports Council International (ACI)), to being the first airport with the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design New Construction (LEED NC) silver-rated certification by the US Green Building Council, an A380-compatible runway, to name a few. We are very clear about all that because all the others had very huge drawbacks, both in terms of infrastructure and in terms of the human resource and professionalism that we had the right to expect here. We made the right choice! The infrastructure, we knew would have no problem, and the HICC staff showed great professionalism and support, always willing to listen to our remarks, and willing to adjust if there were things we wanted to change. Local Attractions: Historical Charminar Hyderabad is almost synonymous with the Charminar. Built by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah, the founder of Hyderabad, in 1591 at the centre of the original city layout. Charminar lies in its entire splendor in the middle of Lad-Bazaar Hyderabad s famous bangle destination Golconda Fort Golconda is one of the most famous forts of India. The name comes from the Telugu words Golla Konda meaning Shepherd s Hill. Golconda was originally a mud fort, which was rebuilt by the first three Qutub Shahi kings over a period of 62 years. The fort is well known for its acoustics among other attractions like the palaces. The exclusive Sound & Light Show takes you right back in time. Qutub Shahi Tombs The tombs of the legendary Qutub Shahi kings are at a distance of a kilometer from Banjara Darwaza of the Golconda Fort. These tombs are said to be the oldest historical monuments in Hyderabad. The uniqueness of the tombs lies in the fact that they are the only tombs in the world where the entire dynasty has been buried at one place. Mecca Masjid Mecca Masjid is located at a stone s throw from the Charminar. The Masjid is so named because the building blocks were brought from Mecca to build the central arch. The Qutub Shahi started building the mosque, which was completed later by Aurangzeb in 1694. Salar Jung Museum This museum is one of the largest collections of antiques by one man - Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III. The display includes Persian carpets, Mughal miniatures, Chinese porcelain, Japanese lacquer ware, famous statues like the Veiled Rebecca and Marguerite and Mephistopheles, daggers belonging to Queen Noor Jahan and the Emperors Jahangir and Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb s sword and many other fabulous items. HUGO HGM 2008 I have seen many venues in the USA; they are huge, but this is just homely, compact, and it is absolutely fantastic. HUGO itself coming to India is a big achievement for the country. When we were thinking of India, there was a big debate, whether we should host it in Delhi or Hyderabad. All of us were pitching for Delhi, obviously because it was much easier for us. But when I came here and saw your team, we thought it doesn t matter if I don t work or don t do anything, because you have enough infrastructure to just make it happen. And this was one of the loveliest places, we could show the foreigners that our country has. And an added advantage we had and didn t expect at that time was the airport.
