WELCOME TO WELLINGTON... W ellington is the capital city of New Zealand and is located on the southwestern tip of the North Island. Despite its status as New Zealand s capital, Wellington is a relatively small city with a population of about 450,000. Roughly 200,000 people live in the city centre while the remaining 250,000 are in the greater Wellington region. The greater Wellington region comprises Wellington City, Porirua, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt. The Australasian Games 2015 will be held in Lower Hutt, a short distance outside the city centre.
GENERAL INFO... T he Australasian games will take place from the 30th of September to the 4th of October 2015. The Games will be played at Te Whiti Park which is located 20 minutes outside the city centre in Lower Hutt. There are excellent facilities at the venue and food and drink will be available at the pitches throughout the Games. The presentation ball will take place at the Westpac Stadium on Saturday the 3rd of October.
GETTING TO MIDDLE EARTH... W ellington is less than one hour s flight from New Zealand's main cities and Wellington International Airport is an easy 15 minute drive from the city centre. Wellington domestic and international flights all go from the same terminal. Direct flights operate from Australia into Wellington from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane with services provided by Air New Zealand, Qantas and Virgin Australia. These and other airlines have indirect flights through Auckland and Christchurch airports. Approximate flying times are: Sydney - 3 hours Melbourne - 3 hours 30 mins Brisbane - 3 hours 30 mins
WHERE TO STAY... T here are numerous options when it comes to hostels in Wellington. All the city centre hostels are a short 20-25 minute drive to the pitches, and close to all the city centre amenities. GETTING AROUND......FROM THE AIRPORT City centre hostels are within 8km of the airport. Airbus 91 is $8.50 to Courtenay Place (around the corner from each hostel). Taxi is roughly $25-$30. A super shuttle will cost roughly $55 between 8 people....to AND FROM THE PITCHES There are a few options available to teams to get to the pitch: Bus hire to take you to and from the pitch Taxi is quite an expensive option Train which will take you to within a 15-20min walk of the pitch Bus Hire: Below are a list of bus hire companies which will save the hassle of walking to and from the train station and the train itself. The bus would take approx 25-30mins to the pitch from the hostels. Depending on traffic this fare could vary from $35 - $60.
GETTING AROUND... Train: The train can be taken from Wellington station to Woburn station http://www.tranzmetro.co.nz/timetable.aspx Attached above is the link to the train timetables. It is the northbound to Upper Hutt line that needs to be taken, getting off at Woburn station. A 10 trip pass usually costs approx $60. The train is 17mins and there is a 15-20min walk (1.6km) or 5min drive from Woburn station to the pitch. Distances from hostel to the train station vary, YHA and Base are about 25min walk, Nomads is a 17min walk and Downtown Backpackers/Hotel Waterloo is a 1 minute walk (across the road) from the train station. Bus numbers 1,2,5,14,24,43,44,46,52,54,55,56,81,83,84,91,211 all drive along Courtenay place to the train station and will take roughly 10mins for those staying in YHA and Base hostels although this can vary with rush hour traffic. Alternately a taxi to the train station is only 5mins. In summary by using the train as your main mode of transport, it will take a total of approx 45mins to get to the pitches from YHA, Base and Nomads hostels. The same journey will take approx 35mins from Downtown Backpackers.
