Its architecture is characterised by low horizontal palaces set around courtyards, decorated with a profusion of symbolic motifs and sculptures depicting the long-nosed rain god Chaac. Explore the magnificent buildings, including the House of the Magician which dominates the site, the Nunnery, and the House of Turtles. In the afternoon, take in a a bit of 1800s history with a drive to Yucatan s only working henequen (sisal) hacienda (farm) Sotuta de Peon. During the tour of the hacienda, we will learn about the origins of henequen and details of Yucatan s enormous henequen boom. We will see the whole transformation process of the henequen (sisal rope), from plant to fibre and from fibre to finished product, all done on centuries old machinery. We then get onto wooden carts pulled by mules, originally used by henequen workers, and take a ride into the henequen fields. THE ITINERARY Day 5 Merida - Valladolid Coba Archeological Site - Riviera Maya (Approx. 285km Day) After breakfast continue your journey to Riviera Maya via the magic town of Valladolid. Valladolid is the third largest city in Yucatan. Valladolid was built over the ancient Maya ceremonial centre or Zaci. The city centre on the Park Francisco Canton Rosad, where you will find the Church of San Gervasio. There are seven colonial churches and the city is nicknamed the Sultan of the East because of its colonial splendour. We keep driving to the archaeological site of Coba, built around a group of lakes, Coba is one of the largest Mayan cities, believed to have been inhabited by up to 40 thousand people.
