Art History Itinerary for Hillcrest and Skyline High Schools 4-Day San Francisco Experience Thursday, February 23, 2017 GOALS AND PURPOSE OF DAY ONE: Transport to San Francisco Securing lodging, check-in, settle-in Learning history of SF area, how to use public transport Visiting cathedrals for Gothic architecture experience and Legion Museum Students arrive SLC airport at Delta Terminal. I will be waiting for you with tickets. Please arrange your own transport to the airport; flight is non-stop to Oakland Airport. Please arrive at the airport no later than 7:30 am. Delta flight DL719 Departs SLC at 9:40 am. Arrives Oakland CA at 10:32 am. You must have a picture ID. If no driver s license, please bring high school ID. You must have it for some museum services and always for airport transportation. Please bring a small carry-on and a purse/backpack only. The airline charges a $25 checked luggage fee each way. Pack lightly. Bring an umbrella and raingear. (We will check long-range forecasts often but it may rain that weekend!!!) Female students intending to visit Russian Orthodox cathedral must pack a skirt (or dress) that can be changed quickly. No admittance to that cathedral without a skirt that is below the knee. Holiday Inn Express at Fisherman s Wharf 55 North Point Street San Francisco, CA 1-415-409-4600 We will drop our bags at the wharf-based hotel; assemble for briefing and distribution of public transport passes (included in total cost of trip) and maps and apps (not apse). Grab some breakfast or a lunch for later on the Wharf. 1:00-1:30 pm Leave the hotel to take public transport (cable car or bus depending on traffic) to Legion of Honor Museum for tour and discussion. Women to bring in a backpack or wear skirts if stopping at Russian Orthodox. #30 bus to Union Square and #38 Geary to Legion. 3:00 5:00 pm Arrive and tour Legion Museum Entry at two times: 3:00 and 3:15 pm Tour is self-guided with teacher/student assisted stops. 5:00 pm Return to the city with stop at St. Mary s Russian Orthodox Cathedral and/or St. Dominic s Catholic church; back to hotel for check-in and to rooms. OR some students may want to go in a second group with teachers to Grace Cathedral for Evensong (You will not see God in the form of colored lights through stained glass but you will walk the maze as a pilgrim. 6:30 8:00 pm Rest; free time and/or dinner (A group may want to go to Pier 39 with Mrs. Bennett & Mrs. M. to eat and see the sea lions.) (self-funded) 8:00 9:30 pm Assemble for re-cap of the day, instructions for the following and hour-long class work on Buddhism and Asian art history collections at the Asian Museum on Saturday. Friday, February 24, 2017 GOALS AND PURPOSE OF DAY TWO: Safe general transport in city. Learning at ASIAN ART MUSEUM 6:30 am Wake up call 7:00 am 8:00 am Breakfast at hotel (included in cost daily). 8:00-8:30 am Depart hotel and take cable car or #30 bus to Union Square and #5 Fulton to Golden Gate Park and Japanese Tea Gardens (admission free before 10:00 am on Fridays) OR Studio students of Mrs. Bennett can catch a trolley and go to Gap Headquarters to see Charlie Brown and the Lichtenstein Arrow (as in I left my heart... ) 9:45 am Arrive tea garden for a zen experience; drink herbal or green tea and watch the rocks grow. 12:00 am 1:30 pm Tour group enter at 12:00 and 12:15 pm Tour deyoung Museum with teacher/student guided inquiry; You may want to rent a headset for a guided tour. You can rent a double to share with a friend for $7:00. Single is $8.00 (? 2:30 4:00 pm *Return to Union Square via #15 Fulton for stop at St. Ignatius Baroque Cathedral and discussion AND Grace Cathedral if you did not go prior. *Mrs. Bennett will take students who wish to see the street murals in the Castro District with other chaperones. Free time in groups pending chaperone approval. 4:00 7:00 pm Free time with approved destinations; studio folks to tour San Francisco College of Art downtown campus; one group to see Street art in the Mission District; another group may go to the Photography Museum or the Jewish Museum of Contemporary art. There is also a walking tour of the City Hall complex. Lots to do with teacher approval and group contact numbers. But remember this is not a shopping trip. YOU MAY NOT VENTURE OUT ON YOUR OWN. Get recommendations for places to eat and be back at the hotel for classwork for Monday. 7:00 9:00 pm Assemble for re-cap of the day, instructions for the following and hour-long class work on American art history collections at the De Young Museum and the Zen of Art History. 9:00 pm To Rooms for bed and getting ready for the following day. 7:00 am 8:30 am Breakfast at hotel (included in cost daily). Walk through Chinatown on Market Day Stop at a Shinto Shrine to ask the gods for our protection. Meet at Entrance to Chinatown to catch train to City Center for Asian Museum OR Some students may wish to tour the San Francisco Academy of Art Studios with Mrs. Bennett. 10:00 11:30 am Arrive at Asian Museum for tour of collections on Hindu and Buddhist Art; continue on your own in the collections with ID cards to finish in the museum. We recommend getting a shared headset for this museum as well. In the past they have been free for students. We ll check on costs. LUNCH (traveler funded; check for recommendations) 12:30 3:00 pm Walk across the quad to see the San Francisco City Hall and then hop a bus to see St. Dominic s Gothic church. 3:00 5:30 pm Free time with approved destinations; studio folks to tour San Francisco College of Art downtown campus; one group to see Street art in the Mission District; another group may go to the Photography Museum or the Jewish Museum of Contemporary art. Travelers bring bags to lobby for storage by 8:45 am Settle outstanding bills with hotel (if any) 9:00 am Skyline AND interested Hillcrest students depart 8:15 for Glide Memorial Church Experience (Rockin!) Meeting begins at 9:00 am so be prompt in Lobby. All others take #30 or Cable car for transport to the new San Francisco Museum of Modern Art 11:00 am 12:30 pm A great new Headset Guided experience through the new SFMOMA 2:00 pm YOU MUST RETURN TO THE HOTEL BY 1:45. GENERAL NOTES The itinerary is subject to change depending on weather, a museum reschedule, and transportation difficulties. Admission to museums is generally free to student groups with advance reservations. Special exhibit admission or headsets costs are to be partially absorbed by Sorenson Foundation. All breakfasts and farewell dinner are included in package costs. Lunches and one dinner will be up to students. Gratuities for hotel porters, housekeeping, etc. are included in the total cost. You must observe rule and appropriate museum behaviors at all times. Our hotel is for other guests too so no congregating in halls to hang out and be noisy. Plan on making a video for students who were unable to come with us. It should be a great trip Mrs. M and Ms. Bennett will share their phone numbers with you to keep track of you as your parent/grandparent-in-residence.
