THE BEAUTY OF & HARRIS The Callanish Stones, peaceful white sand beaches, wild moorland lochs and a black house village are only a handful of reasons why you will want to make a stop on the isles of Lewis and Harris during your island hopping holiday. Separated only by name, the islands are in fact joined along Harris northern border. Home to around 20,000 people, Lewis and Harris economy was built on crofting, fishing and weaving, all of which continue to provide an income to many local families. You ll see evidence of this throughout the duration of your stay on the islands. Whilst on Harris, enjoying tranquil time out amongst the natural beauty, is a highlight for most travellers. The beaches, repeatedly voted as some of the most beautiful in Europe, lie off the West Coast, whereas the East Coast boasts a rocky landscape and isolated fishing villages. While in Harris, take a detour across the bridge to the Isle of Scalpay, a thriving fishing and crofting community with lots of wildlife, a popular bistro and of course the makers of Tweed and local knitwear. St Clement s Church in Rodel, is a fifteenth century church that was built for the chief of the Harris Macleod s and is open to the public. Also worth a visit, is the Isle of Harris Distillery in Tarbert where you can sample the local gin production and tour the recently constructed visitor centre. 8

The landscape is diverse, rugged and beautiful. Regardless of time of year or weather, it has the power to transport you to a place of calm and quiet relaxation, away from the hustle and bustle of modern living. Daytrips to the double world heritage site, St Kilda depart from Leverburgh in Harris or Uig on Lewis and allow you to travel by boat to the small islands located off the West Coast where you will witness the volcanic archipelago, with its spectacular landscapes and unique wildlife, for more information, see page 22. In Stornoway, the main town on the Isle of Lewis, you will find the newly refurbished Lews Castle and museum, fantastic dining options, the local arts centre, An Lanntair and a range of local boutique shops, many of which stock local jewellery and Harris Tweed. Make sure to stop and buy some of the world famous Stornoway Black Pudding, available in many of the local shops, butchers and supermarkets. 9

THE TRANQUILITY OF UIST & BARRA Berneray, North Uist, Grimsay, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay make up the Uists which are all joined by a series of causeways. An alluring expanse of white beaches, flower strewn machair, rugged hills and low lying moor, the Uists trail a peaceful but engaging path southerly to Eriskay where you can catch the ferry for the short sailing to Barra. With each island having it s own unique charm, you will find lots to see and do on your trip through the islands. Stop off on Berneray, a tiny island with a village and rugged beaches before heading to North Uist to visit the contemporary arts centre and tea room, Taigh Chearsabhagh, which is open to the public and has regular gallery exhibitions. The RSPB Balranald nature reserve is also located in North Uist and is worth a visit, whilst the Kildonan Museum, a small cultural centre located on South Uist, is a fantastic place to learn about the culture and heritage of the island. 10

Eriskay is reached by a mile long causeway and is ablaze with wildflowers in season. Famed for it s wild Eriskay ponies and the sinking of the SS Politician which inspired the book and movie Whisky Galore, Eriskay is a beautiful place to spend a day of your island hopping adventure. World famous for it s beach runway, Barra boasts 10 miles of sea, sand, hills, machair and moor. Kisimul Castle, sits majestically in the bay and is just one of many highlights of a trip to the island. Steep yourself in the history of Barra with a trip to the iconic castle, a visit to Cille Bharra, or a wander around Barra s fascinating museum, Dualchas. A boat trip to the neighbouring small island of Mingulay is a great way to see the local wildlife and gain a different perspective of the island. Keep a listen out for some of the regular music sessions in the local bars, a perfect evening of Hebridean entertainment. 11

THE MYSTERY OF SKYE Although joined to mainland Scotland by a mile long bridge, Skye still retains it s island culture and presents some of the most varied landscapes in the Hebrides. The rugged mountain range of the Cuillins in the west; the green, wooded Sleat peninsula in the south and the soft sand beaches on the coast make Skye a fascinating place to explore either before or after an Outer Hebridean tour. The Talisker Distillery, Dunvegan Castle and the Fairy Pools are just some of the attractions that you can enjoy in Skye. CYCLE THE OUTER HEBRIDES Enjoy the beautiful fresh island air on one of our leisurely end-to-end cycling holidays, including fully equipped hybrid bikes chosen for their reliability and comfort on local roads. We provide a helmet, panniers and a handy toolkit with each bike so you are well equipped for your journey. Collect your bikes in Stornoway or Barra for a lesiurely 8 night holiday, exploring 140 miles of scenic landscapes and open roads. Whether you want to use one of ours or bring your own bike, we really can create the perfect trip to suit you. With long daylight hours, this holiday runs between May and September, allowing you to travel at your own pace and take the advantage of the evening sunlight. For more information please visit www.hebrideanhopscotch.com or speak to one of our holiday advisors on 01851 706611. 12 TWO NIGHT STOP OVER IN TIREE AN ADDITION TO YOUR CAR TOURING HOLIDAY The tiny island of Tiree, population about 650, is part way between Barra and the mainland. Beautiful beaches and fascinating history make this a great addition to your car touring holiday. Please ask your holiday advisor for more information.
