The Workshop: We think that the best way to express what you will be learning and experiencing on your journey throughout New Mexico is to share with you a few of the questions we asked India before crafting our workshop for her. What will I learn? We will be using the ecoprint bundle technique on cloth and paper, working into the journal and also stitching on a generous soft organic cotton wrap that will become a journeycloth. I will share ideas for writing and drawing. We may create small installations using found objects, make tools for drawing using natural materials, create and share aleatory poetry. And though for the most part we will be working with nature, we will also use digital photography to record images as we wander What will I experience? "in essence I want to share my way of immersing myself in 'place.' being (t)here. Walking is an essential component of our work. There may be music. There may be rich silences. Times of deep listening, experiential drawing and the gathering of "gorgeous nothings"...spontaneous poetry noted while wandering as well as performances of aleatory poetry created by reading together. We will gather plant matter, processing it over a fire where permitted (and otherwise in a portable electric cook-pot). During our journey together we will spend time observing, listening, and contemplating while creating a visual record in our journals. The essential for me is the deep experience of place and after that, how we might record, recode and respond to the sensations we observe. And although that might look quite serious, I always keep in mind the importance of play. Everything I have discovered in my work has been the result of play and wondering what if. I look forward to responding to opportunities that may arise as we travel. As George Bernard Shaw famously said we don t cease to play because we grow old...we grow old because we cease to play What will I bring home with me? Essentially you will bring home a way of seeing, thinking, observing and being present; along with your journal and cloth. It s about the journey as much as the destination (which for me translates to the richness of process being as important as the product) A Sampling of Excursions: Taos Pueblo: Tour this World Heritage Site situated on a 95,000-acre reserve and home to members of the Taos-Tiwa tribe who have inhabited this breathtaking valley for more than a millennium; today descendants still maintain a traditional way of life. Discover where Taos got its name from the Tiwa language meaning Red Willow and listen to the stories about the historical and modern context of these peoples exploring the San Geronimo Church, the North & South Houses and the Rio de Pueblo, also known as Taos Sacred Waters. Private Lunch + Performance with Robert Mirabal: Robert has been described as a Native American Renaissance man musician, composer, painter, master craftsman, poet, actor, screenwriter, horseman and farmer. Our group will enjoy a delicious gourmet picnic lunch in the tranquil setting of Robert s home listening to the sound of the Rio de Pueblo and a performance by Robert. Time to wander, and reflect will be ours to enjoy for the afternoon. Georgia O Keefe Home & Studio Tour: Abiquiu, NM Botanical Perfume Making Workshop: Christa J. Obuchowski is a traditional naturopath, botanical perfumer, distiller, and educator. In 1994, Christa founded the AromaBotanica Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico, offering a full-spectrum approach to healing the body, mind, and spirit through stimulating natural healing potentials. In her therapeutic practice she incorporates her love and knowledge of the plant world into practical application. Christa will share with us the art and science of blending plant extracts and healing with scent.
