Province of Manitoba Manitoba Bureau of Statistics Manitoba Bureau of Statistics Manitoba Population and Dwelling s Statistics Canada has released the population and dwelling counts from the May of the population. The counts are for individual communities such as cities, towns, villages and rural municipalities. The Manitoba Bureau of Statistics has prepared a Manitoba overview and regional summaries for the province of Manitoba. Also available is an interprovincial comparison of the population counts. All files are in Adobe Acrobat format (pdf). of Population Manitoba Population and Dwelling s () Statistics Canada has released the population and dwelling counts from the May of population. Below is a summary of the Manitoba results. Table 1: Manitoba Population and Dwelling s Population Growth: 2001 to 2001 % 1,148,401 1,119,583 28,818 2.6% Total Private Dwellings Population Density 1 2001 2001 491,724 477,085 2.1 2.0 1. Population density refers to the number of persons per square kilometre of land. Data Source: Statistics Canada of Population The Manitoba results show 1,148,401 persons counted in the last May, up 28,818 (+2.6%) from the 2001 count. This compares to an increase of 5,685 persons (+0.5%) over the previous census period (1996 to 2001). Most of the growth occurred in Winnipeg, Steinbach, Brandon, Winkler and their surrounding municipalities. These four cities alone accounted for 65.0% of Manitoba s total growth and the city of Winnipeg accounted for almost half of the provincial increase. Winnipeg s population totaled 633,451 persons last May for an increase of 13,907 or 2.2% over 2001. The RM of Headingley also grew significantly. As of May this RM s population totaled 2,726, for an increase of 819 (up 42.9%) from the 2001 count. Outside of Winnipeg, Steinbach and Winkler along with their surrounding municipalities drove much of the growth in southern Manitoba. Following the city of Winnipeg, Steinbach had the second largest increase in Manitoba at 1,839 persons (+19.9%). The RM of Hanover (around Steinbach) increased by 1,082 persons (+10.0%). Similarly, Winkler grew by 1,163 (+14.6%) and the surrounding RM of Stanley grew by 1,245 (+24.3%). The Interlake region also reported relatively strong growth. Growth in this region was driven by the rural municipalities of East St. Paul, St. Andrews, Gimli and St. Clements. The RM of East St. Paul increased by 1,056 persons (+13.8%), this 1

was followed by the RM of St. Andrews (up 664 or 6.2%), the RM of Gimli (up 639 or 12.4%) and the RM of St. Clements (up 591 or 6.5%). Many of the communities west of Carman recorded weak or negative growth. There were exceptions however, most notably the city of Brandon. Growth in Southwestern Manitoba was dominated by Brandon which increased by 1,795 persons (+4.5%). The majority of the remaining communities and rural municipalities either recorded weak growth or a decline. Similarly, the North Central region of Manitoba, which includes Portage la Prairie, reported an overall decline. Northern communities on the western border and in the far North reported the largest losses. In particular Leaf Rapids, this community decreased by 770 persons or 58.8% to total 539 persons last May. Similarly, Snow Lake declined by 370 persons or 30.7% between 2001 and. In total, the greatest amount of growth occurred in cities (up 17,824 persons or 2.5% to 744,323). Rural municipalities followed with an increase of 6,229 persons or 2.6% and the count for Indian Reserves rose by 4,379 or 8.4%. Between 2001 and the total count in towns and villages decreased by 585 persons or 0.6%. According to the just over 60.0% of total provincial growth could be attributed to cities. This is slightly less than the proportion of Manitoban s living in cities which was 64.8% in May. Similarly rural municipalities contained 21.4% of Manitoba s total population last May and contributed a similar amount to total provincial growth. Conversely, the share of Manitoba s population living on Indian reserves was just under 5.0%, yet this population accounted for 15.2% of total growth. It should be noted that these numbers are the first of a series of data releases from the. Over the next 12 months, Statistics Canada will release further information (such as age, sex, education etc.) from the. The next data from the covering population by age and sex will be available on July 17, 2007. The numbers released today are counts and not population estimates. Over the next 18 months, Statistics Canada will be preparing estimates of the number of people missed by the. These undercoverage estimates will then be added to the counts to determine the population estimates based on the. 2

of Population South Central Region Population s () The South Central region of Manitoba recorded the third strongest growth among all regions. According to Statistics Canada, the population of the South Central region totaled 54,253 in May, up 2,127 (4.1%) over the 2001 count. This increase was not distributed evenly across the region but was centered in one area, specifically Winkler and the surrounding RM of Stanley. The losses were strongest in the rural areas. The population of Winkler increased by 1,163 (14.6%) persons while the RM of Stanley increased by 1,245 (24.3%). Other areas of significant growth were Morden (up 412 persons or 6.7%) and Altona (up 275 persons or 8.0%). A large proportion of the remaining communities reported negative growth. The RM of Dufferin which declined by 206 persons (down 8.6%) and the RM of Louise which decreased by 170 persons (down 17.2%) recorded the largest losses. For a detailed listing of communities in this region, please see the Table 2 on the next page. Following Table 2 is a map of the region which displays the communities by percent growth. of Population Southwest Region Population s () The Southwest region of Manitoba remained relatively unchanged. According to Statistics Canada, the population of the Southwest region totaled 103,700 in May, up 675 (+0.7%) over the 2001 count. The low growth is due to strong gains in Brandon and the RM of Cornwallis being offset by small losses in many of the remaining communities. The population of Brandon increased by 1,795 (up 4.5%) persons while the RM of Cornwallis increased by 279 (up 7.4%). Rivers, Souris and Minnedosa were also up from 2001, increasing by 74 (+6.6%), 56 (+3.3%) and 48 (+2.0%) persons respectively. Most of the remaining communities reported negative growth. The RM of Pipestone which declined by 148 persons (down 9.4%) and the RM of Blanshard which decreased by 100 persons (down 14.6%) were two of the larger losses. The town of Shoal Lake reported a loss of 121 persons which is a decline of 15.1%. For a detailed listing of communities in this region, please see the Table 2 on the next page.
