Self-Guided Walk Botallack to Land s End A beautiful coastal walk rich in industrial heritage, wildlife and swimming opportunities too. Ending at Land's End. Michael Carpenter, route researcher Key Information : 8.18 miles (13.2km) Time: allow 5 hours plus stops Route Grading: Start: Botallack. Finish: Land s End Drive to Penzance then First Group No 10 to Botallack (Queens Arms). Return from Land's End First Group No 1 to Penzance. There is a limited service on Sundays and bank holidays. 1.8 1.12 Alight bus at Queen's Arms. Walk down road for 400m then as road turns right continue ahead on road and track down to mine exhibition. Visit the exhibition and explore the site including chimneys. Turn left opposite metal winding frame and go through ruins to coast path. Go past another chimney and engine house. Soon after turn right on coast path signed Cape Cornwall to Kenidjack Castle. (A) Botallack mine Chimney and Kenidjack ruins

Botallack to Land s End Page 2 3.6 2.23 After exploring the site take path down to left just before ruins to track and turn left. Soon after turn right to descend into valley. Turn left at the bottom and then right with large chimney on your left and cross the stream. (Explore chimney and ruins on your left).ascend valley turning right at junction and go past white cottage (Wheal Call) to road. Just before road take path to right and follow wall and cross stile. At toilets cross field diagonally to St Helen's Oratory and then cross stone stile in wall. Go left then right and ascend to Cape Cornwall ventilation chimney.(b) Cape Cornwall with ventilation chimney and oratory St Helens Oratoty 4.4 2.73 7.1 4.4 Descend on rough path to left to buildings and turn left. Then soon after at gate go right down steps to road. Turn left here then soon right up rough track to road which you follow to Carn Gloose trig point (C) (these were used to survey the landscape before the days of satellites). Detour along road for 100m to view Ballowell Chamber Tomb then return and turn left. Follow coast path into valley (ignoring path to right) and road. Turn right down road towards the sea and then left to cross stream on bridge. Continue along coast path turning right at T junction and zig zag up to Gribba Point (ignoring path on right). Turn right at junction with the beach at Sennen Cove ahead. Ignore left path to YHA and go ahead through wall and descend through gate into valley to cross stream at Maen Dower. Botallack to Land s End Page 3 11.1 6.88 Continue up rock steps and turn right (NT Nant jullian). (E) Ignore permissive path to left and stay on coast path climbing through rocky outcrops (take care!) and continue along coast path. Further on keep left to stay on the official coast path and follow around the headland to Sennen Cove Beach (adder breeding area on left) If tide is out then walk along beach to car park at Sennen and follow promenade to lifeboat station (F). If the tide is in walk above beach past lifeboat hut and follow above the beach to Sennen joining the beach where possible. View back to Cape Cornwall Swimming opportunities at Sennen beach 13.2 8.18 Continue past the round house and through car park to toilets. Go left up steps and follow round to right to coastguard lookout. From here you simply follow the well worn and clear path to Land's End and your bus back to Penzance. Coastguard lookout Sunset with Land's End in distance Local Information Refreshments: The Queens Head at the start. Plenty of choice at Sennen Cove and Land's End itself. Facilities: Toilets at Sennen Cove at both ends of the village and Land's End. Also near the bus stop in Penzance, and at Botallack exhibition near the start and Cape Cornwall car park. Botallack to Land s End Page 4 Botallack Mine near the start is worth exploring and visit the exhibition if open. The ruins of Kenijack Castle. Historic ruins along the coast from Cornwall's tin mining past. St Helens Oratory at Cape Cornwall. Ballowall Chamber Tomb. Sennen Cove lifeboat station and craft shop in the round house. Various attractions at Land's End. If you have time (half hour) you could continue the short distance to explore Greeb Farm. Swimming is possible at Sennen.
