On 3rd October 1990 Berlin became a single city once more. Berlin is the national capital of Germany, the largest city in Germany and home to more than 170 museums and galleries. Despite its now vibrant and fashionable atmosphere there are also poignant reminders of World War II and the city's division. Upon arrival in Berlin, you will have an introductory tour of the city. We will begin with a walk down the Unter den Linden, a boulevard in the heart of Berlin that starts at Schlossbrucke and ends at the Branderburger Tor (Gate) at Pariser Platz. As you walk along, you will see many of the famous monuments and buildings that paint the history of this famous street and its involvement in both World Wars. After lunch, known in German as mittagessen we will visit the Reichstag constructed to house the Imperial Diet (Parliament) of the German Empire. After World War II, the building fell to disuse, and several attempts in the 1960 s were made to restore the entire building. A full restoration was only made in the 1990 s and the Reichstag has once again become the meeting place for German Parliament. Head up to the roof terrace and dome for spectacular views of the parliamentary and government districts. After the tour; check in to the hotel. This evening enjoy a welcome dinner while cruising on the River Spree including beverages. Overnight in Berlin
May 3 Berlin [B, D] This morning enjoy a full day in-depth tour of Berlin. You will see Brandenburg Gate a triumphal arch, which stood in "no man's land" between East and West Berlin during the Cold War and became a symbol of a divided Germany, Kurfürstendamm and the remains of the Berlin Wall. Visit the Topography of Terror Museum where you will learn how the Nazis organized and implemented the persecution of millions throughout Germany and Europe. The permanent exhibition Topography of Terror: Gestapo, SS and Reich Security Main Office on Wilhelm and Prinz-Albrecht Straße focuses on the central establishment of the SS and police during the Third Reich and the crimes that they committed throughout Europe. Then visit the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Thousands of Jews were sent to Sachsenhausen, where they faced especially brutal treatment. In addition, thousands of Soviet prisoners of war were murdered here in 1941. It is estimated that more than 200,000 people were imprisoned in the camp between 1936 and 1945, and that more than 50,000 people died here. This evening there will be a group dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Berlin May 4 Berlin - Arnhem [B, D] Early this morning you will be transferred to the Berlin Central Rail Station to board and ICE train to Arnhem, Netherlands via Duisburg. Arnhem was founded in the 13th century and later became a prosperous member of the Hanseatic League trading alliance. Arnhem became a household name during World War II when its strategic road bridge over the Neder Rijn became the target of a massive Allied airborne assault. On arrival this afternoon in Arnhem you will be met and taken to visit Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery. Here you will see the memorial and cemetery home to 2,338 Canadian fallen soldiers from World War 2. Afterwards visit the National Liberation Museum where you will be immersed in history of the period prior to the war, the occupation and the liberation of Holland and Europe after the war. During Operation Market Garden, the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division jumped onto drop zones around Groesbeek. A diorama in the parachute-shaped museum depicts the scene. Photographs, films, a slide show, and a model of the area evoke Holland's period of occupation during World War II. During your visit to the museum you will have the opportunity to see the air raid shelter and models of the airplanes that were flown during WW2. After the tour; check in to the hotel. This evening enjoy a group dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Arnhem May 5 Arnhem - Volendam - Zaanse Schans Amsterdam [B, D] This morning you will be transferred back to Arnhem Station to board a train to Amsterdam the largest city and the capital of The Netherlands. A major European centre of commerce and culture, Amsterdam is a lively combination of old and new, with picturesque canals, beautiful 17th century architecture, world-renowned museums, and an international harbour and airport. On arrival enjoy guided tour of the city. You will see the major highlights of the city; the Royal Palace, the National Monument, the Skinny Bridge and Albert Cuyp Market. Visit Anne Frank House to learn about Anne s story and where she hid from Nazi persecution with her family and several others. Afterwards travel to the Dutch countryside to visit Volendam an old fishing village, with a still active harbour. Visit a traditional cheese shop where you will see how Dutch cheese is made before continuing on to Zaanse Schans with its well-preserved historic windmills and homes. Return to Amsterdam for the evening and enjoy a group dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight in Amsterdam
May 6 Amsterdam Ypres, Belgium [B, D] This morning, after breakfast board your coach and travel overland to Belgium. En-route stop at the Sea Dam Control Barrier a strings of gates and massive supporting piers which, in normal weather, allow tidal seawater to ebb and flow in the Eastern Schelde estuary. Continue on for a brief stop in Antwerp, a city highly fought for in World War 2 due to its strategic port. In Ypres visit In Flanders Fields Museum devoted to World War 1 and its impact on Belgium. This evening attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial; held daily as a tribute to the fallen Belgian soldiers who fought for Belgium s freedom. This evening enjoy a group dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Ypres May 7 Ypres - Somme Region - Caen, France [B, D] After breakfast, travel to the Somme Region of France, where you will be immersed in the battlefields of World War 1. Stop at Vimy Ridge before visiting the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial a preserved battlefield park which marks a tragic part of WW1 history; where many fought and died between 1914 and 1918. The Caribou Memorial, the emblem of the Newfoundland Regiment is located on the high ground on the western side of the park. You will see Danger Tree, the only original tree to survive the 1914-18 battles and war. After lunch continue on to the village of La Boisselle, where you will visit the tunnels and trenches that are remnants of the strategic planning of the French and British military to halt the German advances. A local guide will help recreate the battles as you learn the history of this important part of the war. Then visit Dieppe a coastal town located in the Haute-Normandie region of Northern France. Dieppe played a significant role in WWII during the Dieppe Raid, where allied soldiers mainly from the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division landed to occupy the town. The allies were met by a strong German military which resulted in over 3000 causalities and injuries to the allies. After time for reflection, continue on to Caen where you will check into your hotel for the overnight. Enjoy a group dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Caen May 8 Normandy [B, D] Spend today memorializing World War II with visits to the now peaceful setting of Juno Beach situated between Sword Beach and Gold Beach. It is also known as the Canadian beach, as it was assigned to the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division (with the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade). These were representative of the whole nation: three of the infantry battalions came from Ontario, one from Quebec, three from the Western provinces, and two from the Maritimes. Then visit Bény-Sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery which, despite its name, is near the village of Reviers. The mayor and people of Reviers take a special interest in the cemetery for, although it bears another name, they feel it to be their own. Fine hedges decorate the entrance, and the flanking registry buildings have platforms from which visitors can look out on the whole area and appreciate the skill and devotion that has gone into the planning and design of this superb cemetery. It was here at the D-Day beaches where thousands of Allied troops arrived in order to defend the coast against Germany on June 6, 1944. The Battle of Normandy was a significant turning point in the war, and led to the liberation of Paris and the restoration of the French Republic. You will see the deserted bunkers on the beaches that remain as sobering reminders of the war. You will have time to visit the Juno Beach Centre, Canada s Second World War Museum and Cultural Centre. The museum and cultural centre opened on June 6, 2003. The Centre presents the war effort made by all Canadians, civilian and military alike, both at home and on the various fronts during the Second World War, as well as the manifold faces of contemporary Canadian society. Enjoy a group dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Caen May 9 Paris [B, D] This morning continue your overland journey on to the exciting capital of France, Paris.
