Beste Wense Die Texas Potjie Fees Span Hello Everyone, Welcome to the biggest South African party in Texas. We are glad that you could join us in celebrating our South African cultural heritage. This is the 10th annual Texas Potjie Festival and we know it will prove to be the best gathering so far. Besides the Texas Potjie Competition and the Best Boerewors in Texas competition there are many other activities that everyone, young or old, competing or not, can participate in. Live Tri-nations rugby on TV, a golf tournament, free boerewors dinner, the sokkie, Sondag kerkdiens, and a watermelon eating contest for the kids are just a few of the things planned for the weekend. So come kuier saam met ons here at the Texas Potjie Festival. In closing we would like to thank everyone who has made the Texas Potjie Festival possible. We would like to recognize our sponsors. Activities The Potjie Competition The competition essentially started during the first Potjie get-together. The 12 or so Potjie cooks decided to share their food with everyone attending the gathering. After some lighthearted discussions over whose Potjie tasted the best the challenge was on for the next year. It s from that small gathering in 2000 that the Texas Potjie Festival has evolved into what it is today with the contestants still sharing their potjiekos creations. There are four categories one can enter: bread, dessert, open and main. Sign up at the KOA hall. Date: Sunday Sept 5th Place: your own campsites/main tent HQ Time: see judging times Best Boerewors In Texas Competition Started in 2007 the Best Boerewors in Texas gives bragging rights to the winner that makes and braais the best darn boerewors in the Lone Star state. With over 42 entries last year, you know the winning wors must be the best you ever tasted. Date: Saturday Sept 4th Place: Braai Area Time: 4.00-5.30 pm Texas Potjie Golf Tournament The Texas Potjie Festival is featuring a Golf Tournament this year. Best of luck to all those die-hard golfers who have signed up. Hope you aren t babelas! Texas Potjie Festival Raffle Activities Each year we hold a raffle to offset some of the cost the Festival incurs. The winning ticket for this years raffle will receive a # 3 Best Duty Potjie, a bottle of wine, a Vuvuzela, Chutney, an official Potjie T-shirt and mug and other goodies. Raffle drawing: Sunday, Sept 5th, 7.30 pm. Price per ticket $2.00 Texas Potjie Festival Sokkie For the last 8 years we have held a Sokkie at the Potjie. Some years the hall was too small, or too big, but never just right. With the main tent HQ and a large dance floor available for this year s sokkie we hope that you ll be able to raise the roof and shout Balke toe without any hindrances. A big thanks must go out to Pappa Syla van Zyl, Lenry and Erika for organizing the jol. Date: Saturday 4th Sept Place: Main tent HQ Time: 9.00 pm Afrikaans Sondag Kerkdiens In 2008 we held our first Afrikaans Church service in the Rusk KOA Hall. Last year the venue proved to be already too small, and so this years Kerkdiens will be held under the main tent. Many thanks must go out to Ds. Deon Botha for leading us in worship. Dankie Dominee. Coffee will be served after the service. Ladies, if you would like to bring some of your home baked goods that would be much appreciated. Date: Sunday 5th Sept Place: Main tent HQ Time: 9.30 am Kids Activities There will be kids activities held throughout the Labor Day weekend. That way the moms and dads can sit an relax for a little while. Of course we are having the famed Watermelon Eating contest again. Other activities include a tug-o-war contest, a scavenger hunt and nacho munches. Everyone, even the novice, the over-the-hiller, and the unfit, are welcome. Listen for Lenry s announcements.

Competition Rules Please be aware that the rules were recently updated. New rules are in red and existing rules that have been modified are in blue. General Rules 1.Only one entry per category per team, e.g. Vleis Vissagie from the Vis Potjie team can only enter one main category, one open category, one desert and one bread. If they wish to enter a second main category they need to use a different team name, e.g. Vis Potjie 2 or Vleis Potjie, etc. 2.All contestants must register at the Campground Hall by noon (12 pm) on the day of the event. There will be two separate sign-up sheets placed at the hall, one for the Boerewors competition and one for the Potjie categories. Entrants must sign up using first and last name (so we can find you!), team names are optional. 3.When signing up, contestants will take their Styrofoam containers. The contestant s food samples for judging will be placed in these. 4.The Styrofoam containers will be assigned an entry number when handed in for judging (note, this is different from prior years when entry numbers were pre assigned). 5.All entry samples must be handed in by the scheduled time, according to the official time clock. The official clock is located at the hall where judging takes place. Unfortunately late arrivals will be disqualified. 6.The time schedule will be displayed at the Hall and in the Texas Potjie program, which will be available at the campsite office. Boerewors Competition Rules 7.By entering the competition the contestant confirms that the recipe entered is his/her own and made by the contestant. 8. Contestants must enter 1 pound of boerewors to provide to the judges station. 9.Recipes must be the traditional boerewors/real boerewors according to the following guidelines: A. Must contain at least 90 percent meat containing only beef, or beef with a mixture of either lamb/pork or both everybody has their own recipe. B. Not more than 30% of the boerewors content may be fat. C. Wors to be made with traditional flavoring which excludes for example tomato, periperi, garlic etc. 4. The judges will score the contestant s boerewors on taste and texture. 10.A braai grill area will be set up near the main tent for contestants to use to cook their samples.

Cooksite Competition Judging Criteria 1.The cook site judges will be visiting all the camp/cook sites during the afternoon while the potjies are being prepared. 2.The judges will be scoring the cook sites on the general spirit in the camp, hospitality, originality, effort put in to prepare the cook site area, and general impressions. Potjie Competition Rules 3.All the categories must be prepared from scratch on the day of the competition. 4.All entries must be cooked in a traditional cast-iron Dutch oven or Potjie. 5.Potjies can be cooked over wood, coals, or gas burners. Potjies cooked on an electric stove top range, or in an oven range appliance will be disqualified. 6.The available competition categories include bread, dessert, main category (lamb), and an open category. 7.The open category entry can be made from any ingredient excluding Lamb, which is the main category ingredient. 8.The bread and dessert dishes needs to be presented to the judges in the potjie while the open and main category will be presented in styrofoam containers. 9.All categories will be judged on the following criteria: presentation/appearance, texture and taste. 10.The judges will not be visiting the cook sites to look at how the potjies are being prepared or what spices are being used. KOA Policies Pool Rules Here are the Rusk KOA pool rules that apply for the Potjie Festival. You will see that they are common sense rules that are designed to keep people safe and KOA out of trouble for the weekend. No running inside the pool area. No diving into the pool. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. No food or glass in the pool area, and no drinks in the pool. No horseplay. Swim at own your risk. Shower before entering the pool. (It helps to keep the pool clean.) No pets in the pool area. Use the restrooms. (They are very close to the pool.) Only swim wear allowed in pool. No solid floats in the pool. Dog Policies No dogs over 25 lbs will be allowed. If you bring your dog: A $50.00 deposit for pets will be collected at check-in. Contact your Homeowners Insurance and add KOA Rusk Campground 745 FM 343 East Rusk, TX 75785 as an ADDITIONAL INSURED to your policy for Sep 3 to 6 (this is free and takes about 10 minutes). Bring a copy of the policy declaration to provide to KOA at check-in. Bring proof that your dog has had all the required shots. Dogs will not be allowed on the campground without the required paperwork. Dogs HAVE TO be on leach 100% of the time during the entire weekend. Penalties for dogs off the leash: First time off leach lose deposit. 2nd time you will be asked to leave the Festival. Let s keep the Campgrounds Clean Zap it the Zibby Can

Admission, Accommodations and Judges Fees Visitors in KOA Campground (Campers, cabin guests, RV ers): $10 per person for potjie activities. You will get an armband to wear. Day Visitors: $10 per person for the use of KOA facilities and amenities for the whole weekend PLUS $10 per person for potjie activities (sokkie, potjie eating, etc.). You will get an armband to wear. *The Texas Potjie Festival and KOA have the right to deny admission Accommodation Call Rusk KOA at 1 (903) 683-6641 to make reservations for cabins, RV stands, or tents. Mention that your reservation is for the Potjie Festival and pay by Aug 1 to get a 10% discount. Judges for both the Best Boerewors in Texas competition and the Potjie Competition need to attend this meeting.
