INFO SHEET FOR CONSERVATION OF KWALE ISLAND ZANZIBAR 1. PLANTING OF MANGROVE TREES AND OTHERS Volunteers will plant Mangrove and other Trees on Kwale Island, beginning March 2018 until April 2018. 2. BEACH AND ISLAND CLEANING We shall have an intensive cleaning program for the beach and the island as a whole. We will categorise the rubbish. For example Glass, foil, rubber, metal and plastic. This will then be transported to a recycling company. In order to create an awareness not to scatter or burn rubbish we shall distribute handmade dustbins (pakacha) made from local palm trees. The dust bins will be labelled for glass, metal, rubber etc. The session will begin from May 2018 until June 2018. 3. TEACHING KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN AT THE LOCAL VILLAGE Volunteers will have the opportunity to teach English and other languages, play sports, play local cultural games and sing songs to the village kindergarten children. The volunteers will also have a chance to mix with the village youth to discuss ideas of improving the environment in a peaceful and constructive manner. 4. CRAB FARMING Building and laying down of crab cages at the Lagoon. Volunteers will be taught how to make handmade crab cages made from local materials and wood. Feeding the crabs and daily monitoring.
INFO SHEET - UZI ISLAND VOLUNTOUR Uzi Island is located to the south of the main island of Zanzibar.It is 6 km in length, making it the second largest of the smaller islands which surrounds Unguja. The island is located in the Menai Bay Conservation Area thus forming an important ecosystem of mangrove forests, sea grass beds, coral reefs and a large diversity of plants and marine life. This is a great opportunity for the Volunteers to work as well as holiday and have fun on the Island of Zanzibar and Uzi Island. Our Tour begins by driving you from the airport or seaport to the south of Zanzibar Island which is about 1 hours drive. Since Uzi Island is separated by an intertidal zone from the main island it will be necessary to get into a local canoe that will guide you thru the mangrove forest to Uzi Island. This is half an hour by canoe or sometimes if the tide is low we will take you by local bus which is 15mins drive to Uzi Island. Once you arrive you can either have the choice to stay with a local family or use our private accommodation. Most meals will be provided at your accommodation. We offer one week up to four weeks stay at Uzi Island. Here you will have the opportunity to plant mangrove trees, snorkel, beach and island cleaning and teaching Kindergarten children at the local village, learn Swahili, and other excursions. This is an unforgettable experience. ONE TO FOUR WEEK PROGRAM 1. ACCOMODATION You will have the choice to either stay with a local host family or have the opportunity to experience the daily Swahili (Zanzibari) way of life or you can stay at our private apartments. SNORKELLING IN THE NATURAL AQUARIUM The tour begins by taking the Volunteers on a half an hour boar ride to the Mangrove Forest. Here you will have the opportunity to snorkel amongst some of the most beautiful and colorful marine life of different sizes located on the Upper root of the Mangrove trees. Later on we will take you to the surrounding island for some bird watching. Snorkeling Rates Per Person $40 full day includes lunch 4. VILLAGE TOUR The volunteer will have the chance to visit the local village and be able to mix with the old and young people, swim and relax on the Beach. This is a great way mix with the locals who are always friendly to foreigners. Village Tour rates Per person $10 per day. 5. BEACH AND VILLAGE CLEANING The Volunteers will assist us to rake the beaches, remove garbage from the dump areas and learn how to make local handmade dustbins which we will distribute on the island. Most of the rubbish will be categorized for example glass,
metal, rubber etc. The garbage will then be transported to a recycling company on the main island. We will provide the necessary materials and tools to be used. However we would be happy if you can assist to bring gloves, rakes, spades or anything you think may help to improve the environment. This is free for all Volunteers 6. LEARNING SWAHILI The Volunteers will have a choice to learn the local Swahili language in an open classroom. This will be done free of charge 7.
