Berlin is located in north-eastern Germany on the banks of the rivers Spree and Havel. on high-tech firms and the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of creative industries, research facilities, media corporations and convention venues. The city is well known for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and a high quality of living. visitberlin, Foto: Artfully Media, Sven Christian Schramm visitberlin, Foto: Pierre Adenis Berlin was first documented in the 13th century. Soon Berlin became the capital, for example of the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. In the 1920s, Berlin was the third largest municipality in the world. After World War II and its subsequent occupation by the victorious countries, the city was divided; East Berlin was declared capital of East Germany, while West Berlin became a de facto West German exclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961 1989) and East German territory. Following German reunification in 1990, Berlin once again became the capital of the whole of Germany. The H4 Hotel is located at Berlin- Alexanderplatz. The Alexanderplatz is a large public square and transport hub in the central Mitte district of Berlin. Berliners often call it simply Alex. The Alexanderplatz offers a lot of attractions (e.g. the Fernsehturm, Red City Hall), shopping opportunities and restaurants. Places of Interest visitberlin, Foto: Philip Koschel Brandenburger Tor The Brandenburg Gate is one of the most iconic sights in today s vibrant Berlin. More than any other building, the Brandenburg Gate symbolises German reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the country taking its place into a modern Europe. The classical triumphal arch, upon which Victoria the Roman goddess of victory steers her quadriga, was built between 1788 and 1791. The Brandenburg Gate is 26 metres high, 65.5 metres long and 11 metres deep. The Brandenburg Gate faces Pariser Platz, where embassies and the impressive five-star Hotel Adlon are located. From the Brandenburger Tor to the Berliner Dom, the magnificent boulevard Unter den Linden takes you right through the middle of Berlin. Reichstag The Reichstag bears silent witness to Berlin s turbulent history and is one of the city s most significant historical buildings. The Reichstag is an internationally recognisable symbol of democracy and the current home of the German parliament. You can visit the dome and roof terrace of the Reichstag, where you can enjoy an amazing panorama while, just beneath your visitberlin, Foto: Wolfgang Scholvien feet, tomorrow s political decisions are being made. Next to the Reichstag you will find the Brandenburger Tor, the Holocaust Memorial and the Bundeskanzleramt (Federal Chancellery). Berliner Dom visitberlin, Foto: Artfully Media, Sven Christian The magnificent dome of the Cathedral (Berliner Dom) is one of the main landmarks in Berlin s cityscape and the impressive basilica houses the city s most important Protestant church. With its elaborate decorative and ornamental designs, the church interior is especially worth seeing. The church was severely damaged during the Second World War. The full restoration was only completed in 1993. You can climb 270 steps to the dome s outer walkway and be rewarded by some stunning panoramic views. It also has many great tourist attractions within walking distance, making it the ideal starting point for a sightseeing tour of Berlin. Potsdamer Platz Potsdamer Platz in the heart of the city is a popular shopping and nightlife district. High-rise skyscrapers, bustling activity everywhere, people strolling through a shopping centre, going to the cinema and sitting in cafés. At Potsdamer Platz there are restaurants, cinemas, theatres, shopping centres and modern architecture. Every winter, Potsdamer Platz turns into a giant winter wonderland, with Europe s biggest toboggan run, an ice rink, Bavarian curling and an après-ski party cabin. visitberlin, Foto: Wolfgang Scholvien Siegessäule visitberlin, Foto: Wolfgang Scholvien In the heart of Tiergarten Park, the Siegessäule (Victory Column) with its golden statue is one of the city s must-see sights complete with panoramic views! The Column was built between 1864 and 1873 to celebrate Prussia s victory in the Second Schleswig War against Denmark and some other military successes of the Kingdom of Prussia. The gilded bronze statue on the top represents Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory. The statue is nicknamed Goldelse, Golden Elsie. visitberlin, Foto: Wolfgang Scholvien Stehlenfeld You can find the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe close to the Brandeburg Gate in the middle of the city. It is an imposing place of remembrance and warning. This Holocaust Memorial was designed by the New York architect Peter Eisenman and ceremonially opened in 2005. On a site covering 19,000 square metres, Eisenman placed 2711 concrete slabs of different heights. Checkpoint Charlie The Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie (Wall Museum) has been telling the stories of people fleeing from East Germany and the history of the Berlin Wall since 1962. Checkpoint Charlie is an iconic symbol of the division of Germany. In 1961, when East Germany was building the wall, American tanks were stationed here. Visit the Wall Museum to travel back in time to a divided Berlin. You can see an extensive collection of items from 30 years of history, such as cars and hot air balloons that tell the stories of successful escapees. visitberlin, Foto: Artfully Media, Sven Christian Schramm visitberlin, Foto: Wolfgang Scholvien Weihnachtsmarkt Christmas Market Experience winter magic in Berlin! Christmas time in Berlin means festively decorated streets and squares, a stroll through the Christmas markets and, of course, shopping for presents.
