The nne routes n ths brochure have been chosen to offer you some of the best vews, the most pcturesque vllages, the quetest lanes (and former ralway lnes) and an abundance of cycle frendly cafes and pubs for refreshments. Followng the routes The routes have been desgned as lesurely day rdes for reasonably ft rders and nvolve some hlls, so choose a route sutable to your level of ftness, and don t feel dsheartened f you have to get off and push occasonally. Just enjoy the fresh ar and exercse! Route s the easest, and they become progressvely more challengng so that requres the hghest level of ftness. They use open publc roads (traffc s generally lght and the short buser sectons where you should take extra care are marked on the map) wth some sectons of traffc free trals. Each route s hghlghted on ts own Ordnance Survey map wth arrows showng whch way round to go and added drectons at certan ponts to help you wth navgaton. Although the routes are not waymarked, all the nformaton you need s on the route maps, so t wll help to study them before you cycle. Some of the shorter routes may be sutable for adventurous famles but none are sutable for very young chldren. Turnng left after the Lazy Trout towards Leek there are beautful vews of Tttesworth reservor whch has over 00 hectares of rch wldlfe habtat. Lapwng, snpe and curlew are regular vstors to the felds around here and when water levels fall n the summer the exposed mud attracts brds such as oystercatchers, plovers and herons. Soon the road dverges from the lake as you clmb up and then down to jon the Staffordshre Way, just south of Rudyard Reservor. (From here you can take an optonal vst to the market town of Leek, famous for ts textles and antques empora). Follow the former ralway lne through the woodland landscape alongsde the reservor - on summer weekends and holdays you may even fnd yourself cyclng next to the mnature Rudyard Lake Steam Ralway! The reservor was bult n the 880s to feed the canals n the Mdlands, later the famous poet Rudyard Kplng was named after the localty by hs parents who vsted here. After returnng to Tttesworth you can enjoy a rewardng clmb on another short loop towards Ramshaw Rocks, Hen Cloud and The Roaches whch together form a magnfcent grtstone escarpment. Contnue to Tdeswell and take tme to explore ts fne medeval church, known as the Cathedral of the Peak. Cycle up onto Bretton Edge, where there are spectacular vews of the Dark Peak moorlands to the north and the walled landscape of the Whte Peak to the south. Descend nto Eyam, the vllage famous for herocally solatng tself when the plague spread n. An undulatng rde across moors then drops down nto Cressbrook Dale, crossng the Rver Wye below Monsal Head to jon the ralway lne agan. Ths lne, whch untl the90s carred a ralway across the Peak Dstrct from London to Manchester, s now the Monsal Tral, a traffc-free route for walkers, cyclsts and horse rders. Cycle through lmestone cuttngs and tunnels on the Monsal Tral, peerng down on Cressbrook and Ltton Mlls, former 9th century textle mlls bult to harness the power of water. Today, the scene s a peaceful home to wldlfe such as dppers dartng around the rverbanks. Look out for early purple orchds and cowslps n May, followed by ox-eye dases, common rock rose and bloody cranesbll on the slopes. Smell the unmstakeable wld garlc n sprng and follow the flght of colourful butterfles, such as the brown argus, common blue and green harstreak. Vst the pretty vllage of Parwch, where there were several leadmnes n medeval tmes. Contnue onto Bradbourne and around Carsngton Water, a large reservor wth a vstor centre, café and vared brdlfe. In sprng the reservor s home to breedng brds such as lapwngs, redshanks, tree sparrows, redstarts and ravens. In wnter up to,000 brds may gather on the reservor - ncludng goldeneyes, tufted ducks, gadwalls, wgeons, teals and coots. You may also catch a glmpse of some regular rare vstors - dvers, grebes and waders. Although many of these brds can be vewed from the track around the reservor, there are also a number of specfc hdes provded where you can get closer wthout dsturbng them. Clmb up through scattered settlements towards Wrksworth, a bustlng market town wth ts cobbled yards and local craft shops and where lead was mned snce Roman tmes. Then onto Holloway, where Florence Nghtngale, The Lady wth the Lamp used to lve. Enjoy the quet lanes as you cycle up towards Ogston Reservor takng n the vews of the Amber Valley. Stop and explore the vllage of Ashover wth ts Norman church before clmbng up onto Beeley Moor wth spectacular vews over the heather moorland towards the grtstone edges of the Peak Dstrct. Drop down nto the Derwent Valley agan at Darley Dale, wth vews across to the edge of Stanton Moor. Cross over the A road and the ralway lne, part of the old Mdland Ralway s route between Manchester and London whch was closed n 98. Nowadays steam trans operated by Peak Ral run on ths secton of the lne down to. On your return look out for the ancent yew tree at St Helen s Church, Churchtown (thought to be 000 years old wth an enormous grth of feet!).. Beeley Moor,. The Heghts of Abraham, Bath,. Route Route Route Route Route Route Hghs and lows around Hathersage Take a journey through moorland landscapes, experence tradtonal Dark Peak vllages and enjoy spectacular grtstone edges. ng from Hathersage, the vllage Charlotte Bronte vsted and nspred her to wrte Jane Eyre, cycle hgh up onto Abney Moor takng n the spectacular scenery. Vst the small vllage of Great Hucklow, once a centre for lead mnng and now home to a gldng club. Pedal on towards Castleton, enjoyng outstandng vews of Mam Tor, known as the shverng mountan. Descendng nto the vllage, stuated at the western end of the Hope Valley, look out for the runs of Peverl Castle perched on a rocky outcrop overlookng the entrance to Peak Cavern. Nearby can be seen the entrance to Wnnats Pass, a spectacular lmestone gorge. Take a breather n Castleton to explore the home of the world famous Blue John stone, vst the showcaves, pubs and cafes and the vstor centre before journeyng on to the vllage of Hope. As you head towards the small hamlet of Thornhll, enjoy the vews across the Hope Valley before you ascend to take n the breathtakng sght of Stanage Edge, one of the brthplaces of clmbng and stll nternatonally renowned today. At the end of your rde take tme to explore the vllage of Hathersage, whch once had a large needle, button and wre drawng ndustry. The mlls stll stand but are now converted to other uses. You pass the remans of Magpe Mne before contnung on to Monyash, an attractve vllage wth lmestone cottages and farmhouses centred on the vllage pond. Carry on towards Youlgrave and va the hamlet of Alport before clmbng up to Stanton n the Peak, an attractve grtstone vllage from where you can make a short dverson to see the Nne Lades Stone Crcle on Stanton Moor. Route Route Route Route Route Route 8 Hlls, dales and trals Take a journey through the hlls and lmestone dales of the Peak Dstrct and enjoy tradtonal vllages, medeval settlements, copper mnes and a dsappearng rver. The Hgh Peak Tral, once part of the Cromford and Hgh Peak Ralway, takes you north from Parsley Hay. A pcturesque gated road leads you past the footpath to Plsbury Castle, one of the fnest examples of a medeval motte and baley castle n Derbyshre. Cycle down the Dove Valley to reach the charmng vllage of Hartngton, once famed for the producton of Stlton cheese. Then a short secton of the former Leek and Manfold Lght Ralway (bult to serve surroundng dary farms 90-9) passng the quet hamlet of Ecton, the ste of one of the most productve copper mnes n England durng the 8th century. The Rver Manfold makes ts way past Wetton Mll, then dsappears underground durng the summer months. Look out for Thors Cave, beleved to have been occuped by humans as long ago as 0,000 years. Take a breather n Alstonefeld vllage before recrossng the Rver Dove and a hard clmb back to jon the Tssngton Tral at Alsop.
