VIENNA CONFERENCE The heart of a European Top Region Settlements along the Danube, near what is now the City of Vienna, can be traced back to the 5th century before Christ. These were of Celtic origin as is the name Wien derived from the Celtic "Vedunia" for river in the woods. The Romans established the garrison camp Vindobona in the 1st century A.D. Remainders of the Roman camp can be seen at Hoher Markt and at underground station Stephansplatz. Vienna began to rise in importance in the Middle Ages. It was made residence of the Babenbergs and the city walls were raised in 1200. Vienna was to become the capital of the Habsburg Empire for almost seven centuries. Its imperial past is still visible today, as with the Hofburg, Schönbrunn castle, the buildings along Ringstraße and many other sites throughout the city. The fall of the monarchy proved a turning point in the history of Vienna. In 1922 Vienna was made a province in its own right. The Social Democrats then in power pursued comprehensive social policies. By 1933 more than 60,000 new and affordable apartments had been built. The achievements of the "rotes Wien" (Red Vienna) in the social field found international recognition. In 1938 Austria was "annexed" to Hitler Germany and ceased to exist as a state. Most of Vienna's Jewish population was driven away or exterminated. After the end of the Second World War and many years of Allied occupation Austria regained its independence with the state treaty signed in 1955. Unperturbed by the nearby Iron Curtain Vienna continued to build on its international role during the Cold War years. It became a UN seat and was chosen as headquarters for the OECD. 2005 is a special year for Austria and Vienna in many respects: Austria celebrates "60 years of second republic", "50 years of state treaty" and "10 years of EU accession". Numerous exhibitions and events are dedicated to these events throughout the year. Redrawing the economic geography Most influential business experts agree that traditional borders will lose their meaning in the long term. Europe's new structure will soon need to re-orient itself towards cross-border economic regions. The Vienna region is taking a key role in this process. Up until recently, Austria's federal capital was located on the edge of the continent, today it is an indispensable hub in the heart of Europe. But Vienna's geography is not the only factor making it an important economic centre. This capital city scores points with its highly qualified work force, an average strike length measured in seconds, as well as excellent cooperation and know-how based on decades of trade relations with Central and Eastern European countries. 2

Vienna - Number one in continental Europe Austria, represented by Linz and Graz in addition to Vienna, made an excellent showing in a comparison of business location costs published by the international consulting company KPMG. Not only G-7 countries were evaluated in this study; Austria was included for the first time as well. Business experts analysed the most important cost factors, such as real-estate prices, wages, salaries and taxes and to their surprise discovered that Austria is clearly the most cost-effective location in continental Europe, ahead of Germany, Italy and France. If the KPMG study had taken into account "soft" location factors, such as the standard of living, cultural opportunities and leisure time value, Austrian regions and cities would certainly have been even more ahead in the evaluations. Here Vienna is second to none: it is the world centre of music, a Central European cultural metropolis, the city of psychoanalysis and medicine, literature and architecture. Another study of German-speaking cities also concluded that Vienna is the safest city in Central Europe. It has the lowest crime rate by far. Environmental aspects make Vienna a great city to live in as well. There is hardly a city that can offer the same level of environmental quality: 97 percent of the water is supplied by high mountain springs, natural bodies of water are located in the middle of densely populated urban areas, clean air is provided by the "green lungs" of the Viennese Woods and nearby natural wetlands. Maintenance and continued improvement of this unique standard of living is guaranteed by a professional environmental management at the city administration. Measures to secure businesses In order to secure this exciting trend of new businesses in the long term, Vienna is concentrating its economic policies on a number of key areas. In addition to biotechnological companies, establishment of technology-oriented companies is to be promoted. The "Tech Gate Vienna" must be seen as the initial foundation for this effort. This technology park in the heart of Vienna clearly acts as a stimulus for integrating production with related services. More than 50,000 square meters are available here to advance integration of science and research with business and to build up inter-related, high-quality technological R&D facilities. One of the primary goals of economic policy-makers in Vienna is to position and promote the capital as a European (bio) technology centre, in addition to its status as a city of culture. Facts and figures: The Federal Capital Vienna Area: 415 square kilometers Population: 1.610.700 Employed: 764.605 Average income: Workers 1.558 Euro, Employees 1.908 Euro 3

Hotel & Venues The History of the SAS Radisson Palais Hotel In 1872 when the city walls were replaced by the grand Ringstrasse, the Palais Leitenberger and the Palais Henckel von Donnersmarck were built as detached family residences. Carefully restored so as to not lose any of their original splendour, these two palaces come together today as the 5 star Radisson SAS Palais Hotel in Vienna. Situated on the Ringstrasse, in the heart of Vienna, close to many famous attractions including St. Stephen s Cathedral, the Imperial Palace and one of the major shopping streets, the Kärntner Strasse. In 247 rooms you can experience an atmosphere reminiscent of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Le Siècle, the hotel s gourmet restaurant, serves Viennese and international specialties, and was awarded with 2 Toques by Gault Millau. Guests have access to the John Harris Fitness Centre as well as to the Vendome Spa, Floating- Massage-Beauty. 13

Kursalon Hübner The Vienna Kursalon, built between 1865-1867 in the Italian Renaissance style is considered to be one Vienna's most exclusive and magnificent landmarks. Situated in the Vienna Stadtpark with its grand terrace leading directly into the urban landscape park, the Kursalon stands out from other historical buildings. Given its grandeur, beauty, size and appearance, the Kursalon is most suitable and sought after for conventions, balls, product launches, company organizations and other events of that nature nationwide. Following an elaborate two year renovation, it is our pleasure to be able to offer the legendary Kursalon to you for special events. Palais Pallavicini The Pallavicini Palace lies in the heart of Vienna and forms, together with the imperial Hofburg and the Spanish Riding School, a harmonious setting. As one of the most interesting palaces in Vienna it has been over the past and still is the place where official receptions for monarchs and heads of state are given by the Austrian government. The building was erected on the initiative of Count Moritz Fries between the years 1782 and 1784 by the creator of the Gloriette, Ferdinand Hohenberg von Hetzendorf. In the design of the Pallavicini Palace the rich decoration and the luxuriant play of fantasy typical of the Viennese High Baroque style gave way to a massive size and rigid structure that are livened up in a subtly charming way by the portal and the Attica. The caryatides combine magnitude and grace in an ideal way. The reclining figures on the Attica representing presumably trade and liberty are, like the caryatides, the work of Franz Zauner. Moritz Fries who had the palace built was one of the most important bankers of the time. Only decades after the construction did the palace become property of the Pallavicini family. It is therefore amongst those noble palaces that did not get their name from the first owner. For more than 150 years this magnificent palace has now been the property of the margraves Pallavicini, who still reside there today. 14
