Woodbury House October 2017 What s inside Introduction Primary School McGardening Return of the Birds Football Team Update Cat Lover of the Month Good Old Days Show Church Service Around the Home Wishing Wells Upcoming Events 2 3 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 The Manager s Welcome October has been a very special month so far here at Woodbury House. We have had some exciting visitors and lovely events. Visitors will also notice our new CQC result is on display in the reception area, with a Good score across the board, which we are very proud of.

Introduction Welcome to October s Update! Inside are the best of this month s photos and events. Keep an eye out for many familiar faces and see if you can spot where our house cat, Princess, has been napping lately!

Primary School Arts and (Pumpkin) Crafts! We were very happy to see children from local school Farley Hill Primary when they came in to visit us on the 18 th October. The children met several of our residents and together they enjoyed doing some seasonal pumpkin printing while chatting and getting to know each other. We can t wait to see them again when they come in on the 3 rd November to talk to us about Remembrance Day!

McGardening Ivan accompanied Katty and Nikita to B&Q to get supplies for our lovely garden, and then had a well-deserved McDonalds! The next day relatives and team members pitched in to do some planting and get the grounds ready for the winter months.

Return of the Birds! Everyone s favourite owl man came in to visit again on the 6 th September and we loved seeing the gorgeous birds he rescues and cares for. Eagle eared listeners may have even noticed a section on the Jeremy Vine show on BBC Radio 2 about his visit!

Spencer s Wood Team Update Woodbury House are the proud sponsors of Spencer s Wood football team and Coach Paul Bunting has kindly provided us with an update of their successes! So far, they have won both of their league matches in September 5-1 and 6-0 respectively. Saturday 16 th September Spencer s Wood vs Berkshire County Snakes This was the first game of the season and after only a couple of training sessions we were not sure of how the boys would play. The boys went one nil up mid-way through the first half through Elliott. We then conceded a penalty for handball but luckily for us they missed it. However they scored shortly afterwards to make it one all at half time. From the start of the second half, our boys very much raised their games and scored four more goals - three from Elliott and one from Bryn to reach a very well deserved result. Saturday 23 rd September Spencer s Wood vs Woodley United Sharks Our first home game of the season ended in another wee deserved victory. Right from the start of the game, the boys were passing the ball really well, controlling the game, and not allowing the opposition a foothold in the game. By halftime, we were 5. Nil up with Elliott scoring four and Matt scoring the other. The second half was not anywhere near as exciting with us scoring one more and this time it was down to Bryn to score...with the final result being 6-0 to us.

Cat Lovers of the Month There are many who love our cat Princess in the home and this month Jean, who has loved cats all her life, and Alec, whose chair in the lounge is Princess new favourite nap spot, are our Cat Lovers of the Month!

The Good Old Bad Old Days! Many residents enjoyed being treated to the Cats Pyjama s Productions show The Good Old Days on Friday 20 th October. We were taken on a trip down memory lane with plenty of enthusiastic singing and a good dose of comedy and a whole lot of fun in the house long musical show.

Church Service Revd. Paul Willis and his team from Swallowfield Church and the Loddon Reach Benefice kindly come into our home to hold a friendly service with prayers, readings and piano led hymns on the second Monday of every month. Many of our residents and staff appreciate the monthly service and it is open to all who wish to come along. Wishing Wheels Wishing Wheels is a relay of team members cycling between each of brighterkind s 70 homes, starting in Inverness and ending up in Jersey, to raise money for Children In Need. Many homes have already completed their leg of the relay and Woodbury House is due to cycle to The Berkshire in Wokingham on Thursday 9 th November at 8:30am. Our team are looking forward to doing their part to raise money for this important charity, if you are interested in sponsoring us there is a sponsorship form in reception or you can donate through the Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/bkwishingwheels

Around the Home A few nice photos from around the home!

Wishing Wells Our favourite Wishing Well this month was bringing a seaside touch to Frances and Leslie s room. The couple, who have been married for over 68 years, used to love their seaside holidays and their daughter Chrissie thought it would be lovely to remind them of those happy memories. We decorated their room with bunting and seaside images and got them fish and chips, sticks of rock and seaside jigsaws to enjoy with a soundtrack of gentle waves played through our Amazon Echo. They loved their seaside day! Our Wishing Well program aims to find something special and personal that we can do for each resident. Do you have any ideas, suggestions or recommendations for a Wishing Well? Let Katty know!

A final note It was wonderful to have Farley Hill Primary School come in and we are looking forward to building a relationship with them where we can collaborate more in future. We are also excited about plans that are currently in the works with Age UK for early next year. Many good things are coming in the winter months and we are sure that our Christmas event on the 16 th December will be truly memorable.
