BOTANIST TRIP Botanist in the Land of Tsaatan «Tsagaan Nuur also known as the depression of Darkhad, is located in the Wes part of Khuvsgul.An especially wild area, between the red taiga, the mountains, onrushes an rivers, inhabited by Tsaatan, the reindeer breeders» This territory is a natural reserve, particularly watched over, as it is situated very close to the Russian border. Despite its remoteness and access difficulty, this area is particularly preserved and it is a place where you can observe a very rich and often endemic fauna and flora. Also you will be able to find there a huge variety of birds which either live there permanently or arrive in the springtime. The lowlands of Tsagaan Nuur is sort of a huge bowl, where many rivers and streams run...by also creating large marshy areas. The mountains massive of Saian and Khoridol Saridag, is a place where tens of dead volcanoes separate Tsagaan from the lake Khuvsgul. It is in the zone of the foothills where the Tsaatan people live. The name Tsaatan means reindeer breeders, they practice shamanism and live in a very close symbiosis withe the nature. During a few days we offer to share and enjoy with you the culture, ancient traditions and the use of plants of Uriankhai people. Without forgetting the fauna and flora discovery of the west coast of lake Khuvsgul, with Oyumaa s assistance. The specialist of Khuvsgul flora and fauna, author of several publications and a professor in the University of Sciences of Ulan Bator. She will be your guide during the journey, to share with you her passion and her knowledge. This tour is more dedicated to the exchange of knowledge and experience than on the academic presentation.
Day 1 : UB Welcome at the airport settling in a hotel. Visit of the grand monastery of Gandan. In Oulan Bator there are 7 principal monasteries and several temples and palaces, from which the most visited are Gandan and the Bogd Khaan, or the winter palace whose construction began in 1890. Ulan Bator was founded on the banks of river Tuul, previously known as Urga, in the honour of the son of well known a Mongolian lord. The name of Ulaan baatar (the red hero) was given to the capital at the time of the proclamation of People s Republic of Mongolia. The streets of the capital are bustling in the summer time and agitating in the night time. The city is divided in several districts which present large diversities and there are even yurts in the very centre of the city. The development of Ulan Bator is surprising and you will find there all the conveniences of a modern city. Day 2 : UB Moron Ulaan Uul Flight to Moron. Meeting with Oyumaa, your botanist guide. Settling in a hotel
Day 3 : UB Moron Ulaan Uul Welcome at the airport of Moron and transfer to Ulaan Uul. From Moron to Ulaan Uul there is a160 km long trail. On the road we are going to cross the mountain pass of Olii, to arrive in Darkhadiin Khotgor. The discovery of lake Khuvsgul. * Adonis Mongolika Day 4 : Ulaan Uul Renchinlhumbe Road towards Renchinlhumbe. Renchinlhumbe is a small typical town with few houses... the population is quite small and consists mainly of animal breeders. But the location is exceptionally interesting for its botany. It is one of the places where the permafrost is the densiest of al the country. Overnight stay in a guest house of Renchinlhumbe. * Nympea, Nypher pumilium
Day 5 : Renchinlhumbe Tsagaan Nuur Way to Tsagaan Nuur, without forgetting to stop and pay attention to the large diversity of the botany and the wild treasures of this Northern region of Mongolia. Arrival in Tsagaan Nuur. Settling in a guest house. Day 6 : Tsagaan Nuur Mengibulag We will be at the doorstep of red taiga, an the heart of Tsagaan Nuur valleys, irrigated by so many brooks and streams, at the foothills of mountain massifs, in the land of Tsaatans, the keepers of traditions and old knowledge, a civilization, whose origins have disappeared in the mists of time... We are going to continue the rest of the road on a horse to join a Tsaatan family camp.
Day 7,8, 9 & 10 : Together with Tsaatans The discovery of their culture, exchange, studies, moving on a horseback to view several plants, etc. Overnight stay in Tipi. * Ericaceae, Phyllodeltia, Aquilegia, glandulosa, Penguicula vulgaris, saussurea Dorogostaiskii Day 11 : Tsaatan Mengibulag Tsagaan Nuur Returning in Tsagaan Nuur on a horseback. Overnight stay in a guest house, shower,etc... Day 12 : Tsagaan Nuur Ulaan Uul Moron Departure to Moron by car, early in the morning. A long way to Moron...On a quite difficult track... Arrival in Moron in the afternoon. Settling in a hotel. Day 13: Moron - UB A visit of the «standing stones», a past relict, several alignments of «standing stones», graved with deer paintings and sculpted as human beings... Journey to UB by plane Arrival in UB in the afternoon. Settling in a hotel. Day 14: UB A day in Ulaanbaatar, purchase of souvenirs. A goodbye meal Day 15 : International flight
