Dulles Tower Today Washington Dulles International Airport is a public airport located approximately 26 miles west of the central business district of Washington, D.C., in Dulles, Virginia. It serves the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The official airport designator is IAD. The airport is named after John Foster Dulles, United States Secretary of State under Dwight D. Eisenhower. On a typical day, 1100 to 1200 flights are now handled at Dulles. It is among the top fifteen busiest airports in the National Airspace System. The airport occupies approximately 11,000 acres of land, straddling the border of Fairfax County and Loudoun County, Virginia. It is located within two unincorporated communities, partly in Chantilly and partly in Dulles. The airport is west of Herndon and southwest of Sterling. The new air traffic control tower was commissioned in 2007. It is an ATC-11 level facility. The airport has four runways. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) controls all four (4) runways and adjoining taxiways. There are eleven (11) operational positions in the control tower. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) operates the airport and controls the inner ramp area (push backs off gates). 4

Directions to Dulles Tower Address: 24525 Flight Line Road, Chantilly, VA 20151 From Washington, DC: Route 66 west to route 28 North, stay in the right lane, take the exit for the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum (Udvar-Hazy Center). Exit to the right, take the overpass to the service road leading into the museum. Just before the museum there is a road on the right GATE 317. Turn right onto that road. Pull off to the right at the escort area. Tell the guards you re waiting for an FAA escort. Call the tower: 571-323-6350/6355/6351. OR Toll road west to route 28 South exit. Stay in the right lane; take the exit for the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum (Udvar-Hazy Center). Exit to the right, this is the service road leading into the museum. Dulles Tower Policies Reporting for Duty Please arrive at Gate 317 at 0800 for your first day at Dulles Air Traffic Control Tower. If you encounter difficulty getting here, please call the administrative desk. Advise them of your arrival time. The phone number is (571) 323-6350 or 6355. Initially, you will be given a temporary pass for your vehicle and a visitor s badge. An employee or manager will come out to the gate to escort you into the facility. Please bring with you your driver s license number (you will need to leave your driver s license at the Gate), and another form of identification (i.e. social security card, birth certificate, passport). It is imperative that you bring these items; you will need them in order to get your airport identification badge on the first day you report to duty. Hours of Duty Initially, you will be assigned to the Training Department; your manager is Mr. Jim Slate. Your shift will be Monday thru Friday, 0800am 1630pm, until you are assigned to the Operation and have successfully completed the first tier of your training. Your Front Line Manager (FLM) will discuss your new schedule once you are assigned to the Training Team. Upon arrival, policies will be discussed with you concerning breaks, leaving the facility, recall policies, emergencies, leave, etc. Parking Any vehicle you will be driving to Dulles ATCT will need a car hangtag; this will be given to you on your first day. Your hangtag is to be placed on your rear view mirror. You will also be receiving your airport ID Badge. 8
Security Security is of the highest priority. Badges are to be worn at all times. There are special security measures when answering FAA official phones and the handling of aircraft. Security will be a part of your training. When entering or exiting security gated roadways, do not drive off until the gate has closed behind you. Cell Phones Cell phones are not allowed in the tower cab. You may use them on your breaks in an area away from the operations room. This is strictly adhered to as an interference with air traffic systems could occur if they are on in the tower cab. The tower cab must be free from distractions at all times. Phone calls are allowed on break and the use of FAA phones is for official calls or in special circumstances only. When dialing outside the building, you must dial (9) first, followed by (1) plus the area code and number. Use 800 numbers when possible. 9
