port of brisbane Information Guide
A B O U T U S The Port of Brisbane, managed by the Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd, is Queensland s largest general cargo and container port, and a driver of economic growth throughout South East Queensland. The port at Fisherman Islands has seven dedicated container berths, and four deep-water bulk and general cargo berths. These are complemented by 11 bulk and general cargo upriver berths, four of which are multi-purpose, capable of handling wet and dry bulk commodities, and general cargo. The port s limits extend geographically from Point Cartwright, north of Brisbane, to Breakfast Creek, approximately 16km upstream of the river mouth, and include the 90km shipping channel, which is dredged to a maximum depth of 15m LAT (Lowest Astronomical Tide). Since the 1970s, port facilities have gradually relocated from the city reach of the Brisbane River to the river mouth at Fisherman Islands.
A m u l t i m o d a l c o m p l e x At a busy port, an efficient interface between road, rail and sea is vital. The Brisbane Multimodal Terminal (BMT) provides this interface between truck, train and the container terminals. The integration of these transport modes, a dual-guage rail link, and the location of the BMT behind the container terminals, enables the efficient movement of large volumes of interstate and intrastate cargo through the port. QR National and Pacific National run services to the BMT, connecting the port to major and regional Queensland centres as well as the eastern capital cities of Sydney and Melbourne. E s s e n t i a l d r e d g i n g Sediment is washed from the catchment into rivers and transported by tidal action out to sea. Over time this sediment accumulates to reduce the depth of the shipping channel. The Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd regularly conducts dredging to remove this sediment from the bottom of the channels and berths. Dredging also helps to remove pollutants, such as stormwater debris, from the river and seabed. To meet the ongoing demand for dredging, the Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd owns and operates an ocean-going dredger, the Brisbane. As well as dredging the Port of Brisbane, the Brisbane also dredges the estuarine ports of Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Townsville, Karumba, Cairns and Weipa, which also rely on dredging.
t r a d e The Port of Brisbane has achieved 17 years of continuous growth in total trade, with 7.8% average annual container growth over the past 10 years. This trend is expected to continue as the population of South East Queensland the port s primary catchment area continues to grow. Every year the Port of Brisbane services more than 2,400 ships and handles more than 32 million tonnes of international cargo, valued at over A$34.4 billion. In 2009/2010, total trade reached 32.1 million tonnes and the port s container trade increased 2.5% overall to reach 918,999 teus. Key commodities traded through the Port of Brisbane include oil (crude and refined), coal exports, and motor vehicle imports. The Port of Brisbane is also the country s largest exporter of cotton and meat. The Port of Brisbane s major trading partners include: South East, North, and East Asia; New Zealand; and the Gulf and Middle East regions.
V I T A L I N F R A S T R U C T U R E The port at the mouth of the Brisbane River was originally a group of low-lying islands known as Fisherman Islands. Since 1976 the area has been gradually reclaimed, with the port now covering an area of about 750ha at the river mouth. Over the past 20 years more than $1.3 billion has been invested in the port s infrastructure and assets. The Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd recently moved into its new 5 Star Green Star headquarters. The features of the new office include reduced energy use, optimal building orientation, rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling, the use of natural lighting, water sensitive urban design elements and ecofriendly building products. Other major infrastructure projects include maintaining deep water access to the port by the realignment and widening of the Spitfire Channel in Moreton Bay, ongoing reclamation of the 230ha Future Port Expansion area, and the construction of container berths 11 and 12, which will increase Brisbane s container-handling capacity by 25%. Annually, businesses at the Port of Brisbane contribute about $1.9 billion to Queensland s economy, and contribute directly and indirectly to the creation of more than 11,000 jobs, mostly in Queensland.
P O R T E F F I C I E N C Y The Port of Brisbane is located at the mouth of the Brisbane River and adjacent to the Moreton Bay Marine Park, an area of high ecological and conservation value. The marine park supports a variety of habitats including mangroves, extensive intertidal flats and seagrass areas. The Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd is committed to operating the port in an efficient and sustainable manner, with a focus on reducing the port s greenhouse gas emissions, improving resource efficiency across its operations, and fostering climate change awareness and action among employees and the port community. The Port of Brisbane is a world-class industrial trade and transport hub, and has a strong focus on high development standards. Development on port land is guided by a set of criteria, which cover water, energy, waste, stormwater management and more, to help the port s operators incorporate sustainable design features into new port facilities.
