Places to Visit Corbiere Lighthouse Completed in 1874, Corbière Lighthouse was the first such structure in the British Isles to be built entirely from concrete, rather than traditional stone, blockwork. The many lighthouses which are built from stone require complex arrangements of interlocking blocks to prevent the sea from eroding and finally demolishing man's handiwork. Corbière, on the other hand, has no chinks and fissures for the sea to probe in search of weaknesses, so it has withstood the test of the past 130 years without apparent difficulty. the light is the principal means of warning ships of the perils of the Island's south-west coast, a powerful foghorn has been sited at the foot of the tower. Jersey War Tunnels During World War II, the Crown left Jersey defenceless and the Island became occupied by German forces. Jersey War Tunnels are a product of five long years of Occupation; they bore witness to the particular cruelty of the Nazi regime. Dug deep into the hillside by forced and slave workers from nations across Europe, the extraordinary tunnels run over 1km in length. They now contain an underground collection of thought provoking galleries that detail Jersey s occupation history from resistance, through to starvation, and then eventual liberation. You ll never believe this happened on British soil. See it, feel it, believe it, at Jersey War Tunnels. Mont Orgueil Castle History comes to life at Mont Orgueil Castle, which for over 600 years protected Jersey against French invasion. Explore the network of staircases, towers and secret rooms to discover hidden treasures. Discover Hidden artwork commissioned to tell the story of the castle; Climb the turrets to find the medieval wheel of urine, and descend into the cellar to experience the 'witchcraft' exhibit. Life-size wooden soldiers guard the castle from attack and 'the wounded man' statue shows the fate that could befall those fighting to save the castle from invasion. Jersey Museum & Art Gallery Jersey Museum presents history from 250,000 years ago when the first people arrived in Jersey and continues through the centuries to explore the factors that have shaped this unique island and the people who live here. Find out why Jersey remained loyal to the English Crown despite being so close to France; listen to Jersey-French being spoken; learn about the Island's traditional farming industry and watch fascinating archive footage of the early years of tourism. The gallery has the famous painting by Copley The Death of Major Peirson this painting represents the Battle of Jersey in 1781, a pivotal point in Jersey s history. This is the most important painting to the history of the Island.
