COMMON FORUM ON CONTAMINATED LAND IN THE EUROPEAN UNION (BILBAO) Venue Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall http://bit.ly/mrwrc0 Avenida de Abandoibarra, 48011 Bilbao Google Maps: http://bit.ly/mwgts8 FROM THE OUTSIDE In its urban setting, the design of the Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall has two clear facets: The façade overlooking the River has no adjoining blocks and the steel ship rises up forcefully. The effect is clearly marked by the water of the dock, in contact with the hull, and the arrangement of lampposts in the shape of a crane on the dockside. However, the other fa çade, which overlooks the Doña Casilda Park, uses volumes that reduces its scale and the large building of glass, aluminium and stone looms over the city.
THE SHIP BUILDING Naturally, the most spectacular part of the Conference Centre is the ship-building, which is 90 metres long, 40 metres wide, 52 metres high and has a double metal hull, which is only perforated by the entrances to the spaces occupied by the congress rooms and auditorium. It is built out of Corten steel that has a low carbon content. The main characteristic of this material is that a compact and weather -resistant thin rusty layer forms on the surface, which helps to protect against atmospheric corrosion and which is treated to make sure it does not stain. The ship-building is the heart of the conference centre and forms the essential framework for one of its main features: its multifunctionality. Its colour evolves over time and it has a high mechanical resist ance, which means a saving on maintenance and weight. Many of the works by Oteiza and Chillida, among other sculptors, are made out of this material.
The sloping line of the ship -building's bow is eye catching and interesting. Its shapes enhance the line of the keel, whose vision is respected in a large part of the height. The entrances through the bow to the different levels leading to the stalls and boxes of the Auditorium are along metallic gangways that overcome the existing emptiness and end at the doors of the Auditorium, as if it were a real vessel. The ship-building is the heart of the conference centre and forms the essential framework for one of its main features: its multifunctionality.. Many leading figures from the world of music and show business h ave admired and praised the great qualities and advantages of this audito OTHER ROOMS The Conference Centre also has a further 24 rooms of different sizes that range from offices, for small meetings up to 10 people, to a 282 -seater theatre hall. The luxurious VIP room and board rooms are ideal settings for even top meetings. A Business Centre, equipped with photocopies, fax and computers with Internet connections, is available for the delegates. Avda.
