Location & Local Information Chalet Les Houches is one of the few ski in ski out chalets in the Chamonix valley. It is situated in a magical setting in its own private grounds, and enjoys truly spectacular views, with the centre of Les Houches only a 5 minute drive away. Although the chalet is ski in ski out, it is located on the side of a red run. If you're comfortable skiing a blue run, you'll probably be able to ski back to the chalet as you can ski virtually all the way down on a blue, with only the last section after the chalet providing the challenge of a red run. Also, if you walk down the drive, another blue home run is only 50 metres away. The chalet has a 160 metre drive that can only really be accessed by a 4x4 with snow tires in winter - this may mean you will have to walk up and down it for access. There is also a mazot down by the parking at the bottom of the drive, so it's easy to leave your skis there if you can't drive up. Les Houches village is only a 5 minute drive away. You'll find a number of shops, supermarkets and restaurants there, but Chamonix is only a further 10 minute drive away. Chamonix itself is world-renowned as the skiing and climbing capital of the world. It hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and since then has been a centre for extreme sports in both summer and winter - but Chamonix offers far more to you than extreme sports! Sitting at the base of the majestic Mont Blanc (Europe's highest mountain) it is an area of outstanding natural beauty with an elegant and cosmopolitan town centre. It also has some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring scenery to be found anywhere (not just in the Alps!) with tumbling glaciers, soaring Aiguilles, and one of Europe's highest cable cars - the Aiguille du Midi at 3842m. There's also plenty for the non-skier to do in Chamonix, including an impressive sports and swimming complex, beauty salons, spas, an ice rink, cross country skiing, paragliding, husky sledging, guided snowshoeing, a cinema, museum, casino and weekly market with fresh local produce. There's a plethora of shops and designer boutiques for retail therapy as well as bars, restaurants, terraced cafes and night-clubs. Chamonix offers a combination of skiing, old town charm, apres-ski, shopping and sightseeing. Chamonix boasts a superb snow record, a long season (Dec-May), unrivalled off-piste skiing and views to die for. Indeed, Chamonix has an international reputation as having some of the most spectacular, challenging and exhilarating skiing and boarding available anywhere in the world. The Chamonix valley is both huge and daunting - and that's before you figure in the neighbouring resorts! The Mont Blanc lift pass covers 8 local and 13 regional ski areas with terrain up to 3840m, over 200 lifts and 700km of piste - with the majority of the ski areas being above 2000m. It caters for all standards, from beginners right through to experts. Page 4
