Gerald papers Span Dates, 1920-1990 Bulk Dates, 1949-1980 5 feet, 10 inches (linear) Processed by Bobbi Sago, September 2001 Updated by Laura Hollingsed, October 2009 Donated by Deborah Martin, 1991 Citation: Rex E. Gerald papers, 1949-1990, MS 353, C.L. Sonnichsen Special Collections Department, The University of Texas at El Paso Library. C. L. Sonnichsen Special Collections Department The University of Texas at El Paso

Biography Rex E. Gerald was an anthropologist, teacher, and museum director at the University of Texas at El Paso. He received his Bachelor s degree from the University of Arizona in 1951. During the Korean War he served as a physical anthropologist for the Central Identification Unit of the U. S. Army in Japan and Korea. Upon returning from the war, he enrolled in graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania where he received his M.A. in 1957. While in graduate school, he worked on excavations at Point of Pines, Arizona, Hermit's Cave, New Mexico, and Janos, Chihuahua, Mexico. In 1958, he came to El Paso and became the Director of the Centennial Museum at the University of Texas at El Paso. He served as director of the museum for 22 years, and he was the "driving force behind the museum's involvement in Contract Archaeology". 1 He received his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1975. In the 1970s, he researched Indian groups of the El Paso area. His findings were instrumental in federal recognition of the Tigua tribe of Ysleta del Sur Pueblo. Rex E. Gerald died on May 13, 1990. Series Description The Rex E. Gerald papers are arranged in six series: Series I. Correspondence; Series II. Research; Series III. Reports and Surveys; Series IV. Articles and Papers; Series V. Slides and Photographs; and Series VI. El Paso Centennial Museum Office Files. Scope and Content Notes The Rex E. Gerald papers consist of correspondence, articles, photographs, slides, and research files related to his long career as an anthropologist, teacher, and museum director. Series I. includes two small files of letters related to various projects throughout his career. The second series contains research notes primarily related to kinship. Reports and surveys relating to El Paso and the West Texas area which were prepared and submitted by Rex E. Gerald are in the third series. This series contains reports about digs in Arizona and in Casas Grandes. Series IV. contains articles written by Rex E. Gerald and includes a copy of The Artifact; the publication of the El Paso Archaeological Society, containing five favorite articles by Rex Gerald published posthumously with a memoriam to him. Series V. contains slides of various archeological sites --primarily in Mexico, but including some sites around the Southwest. The last series holds Gerald s office files from his years as director of the Centennial Museum on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso. 1 Martin, Deborah, "Introduction, Collected Papers of Rex E. Gerald", The Artifact, vol. 8 no. 3, 1990.
