FLL ATCT Welcome Letter Welcome to the Ft. Lauderdale Air Traffic Control Tower Team! The FAA Air Traffic Organization provides the opportunity for employees to continually learn, develop, and expand their horizons. Air Traffic Control is an ever growing, ever changing field that is a vital component of the National Airspace System and global aviation. Our growth is as limitless as our imagination. Ft. Lauderdale Tower is proud to provide high quality service in the safest aviation system in the world. We seek to continually provide our customers with excellent service and encourage feedback on how we can improve. We support the growth and development of our personnel, from the training of new employees through career development for seasoned personnel. We are fully engaged in developing the next generation of air traffic control. As one of the Core 30 Airports, FLL is an integral part of the National Airspace System (NAS). We provide safe and efficient service to help keep our customers moving through the nation s airspace system. Welcome to FLL ATCT! TJ DelNegri Theodore DelNegri, Acting Air Traffic Manager Office: (954) 921-9200 Email: theodore.delnegri@faa.gov 3

Ft. Lauderdale Past and Present The Ft. Lauderdale International (FLL) Airport Traffic Control Tower was built in 1983 and has been refurbished numerous times to remain up to date. The FLL ATC Tower is located on the west side of the airport, standing 177 feet tall. We have a great view of the city of Ft. Lauderdale, the Atlantic Ocean, downtown Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood and Miami. The facility equipment includes state of the art ASDE-X, STARS display and TDWR weather radar. FLL ATC Tower is a 24/7 air traffic control facility with total tower operations of 271,408 in 2013 and is classified as an ATC-8. FLL ATCT is one of the nation s top 30 Core Airports and is a key component of the National Airspace System. The growth and demographics of the Ft. Lauderdale area heavily rely on the FLL airport and it is a major asset in the Broward County economy. In April/2012 Runway 9R/27L closed as part of the airports south runway expansion project. The new runway expansion project should be completed sometime in September 2014. Numerous taxiway closures are associated with the construction which is being conducted in several phases. On May 2, 2013, FLL had a Magnetic Variation (MAGVAR) change and Runway 9L/27R changed to Runway 10L/28R. On May 6, 2013, Runway 13/31 was permanently decommissioned as part of the expansion project. The culmination of the south runway expansion project will be in September/2014 with the opening of an 8,000 ft. south parallel Runway 10R/28L. The new look FLL Airport will have a taxiway structure and aircraft holding area that support the current configuration of two parallel Air Carrier type runways, and will lead the airport today and beyond. As of March 2016, our Operational Staffing at Ft. Lauderdale ATC Tower has 24 Certified Professional Controllers, (CPC s), 2 Developmental s (DEV), 2 Certified Professional Controller In-Training (CPC-IT s), and 4 Front Line Managers. 4

About Fort Lauderdale, Florida Incorporated on March 27, 1911, the City of Fort Lauderdale is situated on the southeast coast of Florida, centrally located between Miami and Palm Beach. Encompassing more than 33 square miles with a population of nearly 180,000, Fort Lauderdale is the largest of Broward County's 30 municipalities and the seventh largest city in Florida. Embraced by the Atlantic Ocean, New River and a myriad of scenic inland waterways, Fort Lauderdale truly lives up to its designation as the "Venice of America." The City of Fort Lauderdale is named for a Second Seminole War fortification built on the banks of New River in 1838. In that year, Major William Lauderdale led a detachment of Tennessee Volunteers south along the east coast of Florida to capture Seminole agricultural lands and battle the elusive Indian warriors. Altogether, three forts named after Major Lauderdale would be constructed: the first at the fork of New River; the second at Tarpon Bend; and the largest on the beach at the site of Bahia Mar. None of the forts survives today. There is more historical information at http://www.oldfortlauderdale.org/. An advantageous economic climate is helping the City of Fort Lauderdale establish itself as a world-class international business center and one of the most desirable locations for new, expanding or relocating businesses.
