BOOK BEFORE 30 NOVEMBER 2009 AND SAVE 600 PER PERSON River Deep & Mountain High A NAVIGATION OF THE MOSELLE AND RHINE RIVERS FROM SWITZERLAND TO THE LOW COUNTRIES Join us in early summer for our journey along Germany s lovely rivers. The mighty Rhine, for so long one of Europe s main trading routes contrasts beautifully with our exploration of the Moselle, surely one of the loveliest rivers in all Europe. We will also visit the historic city of Heidelberg on the Neckar River, one of Europe s great seats of learning. Most trips on offer along the Rhine are based on four to six days and concentrate on only one section of the river. Here you have a most comprehensive journey including as it does some of the most interesting places in the Netherlands, combined with the great wine producing areas along the Moselle and the historic cities of Cologne, Koblenz and Heidelberg and the enchanting resort of Baden-Baden. Added to these riches are visits in France to Strasbourg, an endlessly fascinating place in the delightful Alsace region. This detailed look at two of Europe s great rivers will offer a captivating and endlessly romantic journey. The scenery is stunning and makes an excellent combination with the artistic riches we shall see along the way from the wonderful collections on show in the museums and galleries to the fairytale castles and medieval charms of the towns and villages along the rivers. This promises to be a most relaxing and rewarding journey. The Itinerary Day 1 London Heathrow/Manchester* to Basle. Fly by scheduled flight. Upon arrival transfer to the MS Spirit of Caledonia for embarkation. Welcome drinks and dinner on board. Moor overnight. Day 2 Basle. This morning s excursion will take us to the old market square with its brightly painted Town Hall and along Minster Hill, past many handsome 18th century houses to the Minster with its slender twin spires. The oldest parts of the building date between 9th-13th centuries, although much was rebuilt in the Gothic style after the 1356 earthquake. Afternoon at leisure or join an optional excursion to the Black Forest. Sail in the early evening. Day 3 Strasbourg. Arrive in Strasbourg early this morning. A morning guided tour will introduce us to the delights of Strasbourg including the fascinating old quarter. Start with the Quai de la Cochem on the Moselle River NORTH SEA The Hague Delft Arnhem Rotterdam Antwerp Brussels NETHERLANDS Maas Moselle Cologne FRANCE Strasbourg Basle Baden-Baden Petite France where the River Ill splits into a number of canals, see the Ponts Couverts, a series of wooden bridges dating back to the 13th century, the Place Gutenberg and the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the tallest medieval building in Europe. Afternoon at leisure. Day 4 Baden-Baden. Arriving in Plittersdorf early this morning, we leave the banks of the Rhine and drive inland to the spa town of Baden-Baden. This beautiful belle-epoch resort is one of Germany s best kept secrets. The spa assembly rooms and famously elegant casino form the focal point of the town, both architecturally and socially. In the spa park, the Lichtentaler Allee runs for several kilometres from the pump room to Lichtental Convent past the neo-baroque theatre. The old quarter is full of elegant houses, exclusive boutiques and cafés and is fully pedestrianised. After a guided tour there will be free time to wander around this remarkable town which somehow manages to retain its old world charm and yet be very much of the 21st century. Sail this afternoon. Day 5 Heidelberg. From our berth in Mannheim, we visit Heidelberg where we have a day to enjoy this most picturesque and romantic of German cities which is home to Germany s oldest university, dating back to 1386. A morning tour will include the castle, a dramatically sited red sandstone ruin that dominates the city, the old town with its famous market place and the city gates. Continuing our journey along the Rhine, we reach Rudesheim in the late evening. Day 6 Rudesheim. Rudesheim is a colourful riverside town. Here you can explore the cobblestone streets of the Drosselgasse and take a mini-train to Siegfried s Mechanical Music Museum. Day 7 Bernkastel & Trier. Here in the heart of the Moselle Valley we will explore lovely Bernkastel and sample some of its locally produced wine. Later drive to nearby Trier, onetime capital of the Roman Western Empire and a fascinating mix of European architectural styles, but pride of place goes to the most impressive group of Roman monuments north of the Alps. See the Roman ruins including the impressive Porta Nigra, the most important ancient monument in the city and the largest Roman city gate extant. Sail in the late evening. Day 8 Cochem. Relax this morning and enjoy the lovely scenery of the Moselle Valley as we make our way to Cochem, where we will arrive in the early afternoon. The town of Cochem is famous for its 11th century Schloss and the Reichsburg, set impressively on a tree clad hill above a bend of the river. On the guided tour, walk along its winding medieval streets and see the Baroque Town Hall. Cruise back up the Moselle this afternoon, rejoining the Rhine and reaching Cologne in the late evening. Day 9 Cologne. On our morning guided tour we will include a walk along the river promenade and through the old town to the magnificent cathedral, the largest in Germany. Later, visit a local brewery and sample its excellent beer. Afternoon cruising. Day 10 Arnhem. This morning drive to the nearby Palace of Het Loo, the favoured summer residence of the Dutch Royal family from 1686 to 1975. The Palace and grounds have undergone a spectacular restoration returning them to their original 17th century splendour. Rejoin the vessel for lunch and enjoy some free time to explore this afternoon. Arnhem is well known because of the airborne paratrooper landings and the battles around the bridge over the Rhine. On the town side of the bridge stands a monument commemorating the British forces. Optional afternoon tour to the 75 acre Dutch Open Air Museum where a brick-by brick reconstruction of 60 houses, windmills, barns and farm buildings provides a wonderful representation of rural 17th-19th century Holland. Siegfried s Music Museum, Rudesheim Day 11 The Hague & Delft. From Rotterdam we will head for The Hague where our first stop is the Mauritshuis; since 1822, it has housed the Royal Cabinet of Paintings. Some of the most revered golden-age art treasures, including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Paulus Potter can be admired here. Another must-see is the 395-foot Panorama Mesdag, a cylindrical landscape created in 1881 by Hendrik Willem Mesdag. After lunch we will make our way to nearby Delft. Vermeer was born here and we will see the place where he painted his famous View of Delft. After a tour of the famous Delft Blue Pottery a boat trip will take you along the canals of the town.
