Rotterdam was chosen as the location for the 8th International Lymphoedema Conference because if it's unique historical significance and symbolic meaning. The conference location is the former steamship SS Rotterdam; the first steamship of the Holland-America line between Rotterdam and New York. The ship was built in Rotterdam. The legendary former flagship of the Holland America Line is 228 metres long, 28 metres wide, 61 metres in height, rich in history and renowned for its cultural and historic value. SS Rotterdam is also referred to as La Grande Dame. The city of Rotterdam also offers a variety of unique sightseeing possibilities, sightseeing opportunities, such as the variety of modern architecture. Rotterdam is situated close the famous windmills on Kinderdijk, the oldest city of the Netherlands, Dordrecht and to the beautiful city of Delft. In addition, the Netherlands is well known for its water management system, which is akin to the lymphatic system. The country's great number of canals and rivers can be imaginatively compared to capillaries and lymph vessels. Every now and then they threaten to be overloaded and solutions are sought to overcome these obstructions. It is therefore fitting that this conference be held in conjunction with the ILF's newest national lymphoedema framework. Thanks to the efforts of the Dutch Lymphoedema Framework (NLNet), primary and secondary lymphoedema are well recognized in the Netherlands. Issues related to lipoedema are also of great importance to the framework. Lymphology in the Netherlands is well known for its chronic care model, which includes self-management. The conference in the Netherlands is therefore an excellent opportunity to offer our colleagues from abroad insight into our unique ideas on lymphedema care. The scientific committee, consisting of representatives both from the ILF and the NLNet, is working on a for the 8th International Lymphoedema Framework Conference that will be relevant to healthcare professionals, patients, researchers as well as industry. The principal topics for the conference will include: lymphoedema and disability; skincare and lymphoedema; therapeutic education of children with lymphoedema; surgery and lymphoedema; obesity and lymphoedema; lipoedema; palliative care and lymphoedema; psychological aspects of lymphoedema; diagnostics; developments in compression; infection in lymphoedema; genetics; oncology related lymphoedema; self-management and the chronic care model. At the 8th International Lymphoedema Conference, we will aim to achieve a greater awareness of the condition and treatment throughout the world, and to ensure that lymphoedema becomes a priority on national health care agendas everywhere.
