WELCOME TO DUNSTAFFNAGE The last 18 months has been a particularly busy period for all the staff and customers based here at the Marina. The reason for this is that we have implemented some significant changes and updates to the Marina to freshen up and keep abreast with the ever changing ways of operating a Five Gold Anchor Marina. The biggest project by far was installing the 184 metre concrete pontoon facility, now known as leg G and H. Each concrete pontoon is 4-metres wide and is equipped with water delivery and 64amp, 32amp & 16amp power sockets. They were manufactured on site by Gael Force and Orsta Marina Systems. The overall structure is close to 300-tonnes of concrete secured by massive chains and anchors. There is 100 s of metres of electric cabling, water delivery pipes and the whole installation was secured to the sea bed by a local marine specialist firm North West Marine. Coupled with this is the new entrance and fairway. The Marina has done its best to promote knowledge of this important change for mariners and we actually feel the layout of the bay is now much safer and more inviting. The local Mooring Association has been helpful throughout this process as it has required a number of the moorings to be relocated within the bay. There are various lit buoys located at the entrance and fairway to emphasise how to navigate safely. Please contact the Marina office via telephone or VHF channel 37 if you have any concerns. There are two main objectives behind the expansion to the Marina. Firstly, the design of the new pontoons and the angle at which they are situated within our configuration will attenuate waves and fetch that advance through the bay entrance and the eastern side of the Marina. We know this has already protected large portions of the internal configuration of the marina which is great news for all. Secondly, the Marina is aiming to attract and accommodate larger vessels that explore the area locally and further afield to the Western Isles. The vast length of the concrete pontoon enables vessels of 150ft or more to stay at the Marina and enjoy its facilities. Our market research has seen an increase in Super Yachts from the UK and in particular abroad visiting the area. Apart from possessing some of the best sailing grounds in the world, (official) Scotland does offer an exciting opportunity for these large vessels to enjoy the countryside without some of the security issues that exist in other parts of the world. The summer of 2016 was our first season using the new pontoon facility and without any real marketing we welcomed Ebb Tide a 27m Royal Huisman Sailing Yacht and Flyer II a 20m Swan (winner of the Whitbread Cup in 1981-82). Both vessels liked it so much they stayed all summer. These beautiful sailing vessels added to the already fantastic range of vessels that berthed at Dunstaffnage in that season. The 2017 Year Book contains some great information which I know will aid you with understanding what is available for you at Dunstaffnage. I hope your stay with us is pleasurable and we look forward to meeting you soon. Happy Sailing! Ranulph McLauchlan Marina Manager 4

THE MARINA Dunstaffnage Marina can be found in probably the best location on the West Coast of Scotland for sailing. We are situated 3 miles North of the busy town Oban, tucked into the natural bay that is Dunstaffnage Bay. We consider ourselves to be an ideal spring board to any of the inner and outer Isles. Associated Organisations & Awards Awarded 5 Gold Anchors The Yacht Harbour Association Member of the British Marine Federation Finalist of Scotland s Best Marina 2016 SOLA Awards Member of Super Yacht UK Member of The Yacht Harbour Association Berthing We currently have 250 fully serviced year round berths. We can offer short term or long term berthing for vessels of all lengths by using our standard size visitor berths (12m) and our new concrete breakwater and super yacht pontoon (184m). Diesel is dispensed from the fuel hammerhead D, which is the 3rd hammerhead from the western end. Summer Afloat Summer berthing is provided on the pontoons within the areas protected by the outer breakwater pontoons. Our summer tariff commences on 1st April each year and runs until 30th September. If you are interested in booking a summer or annual package please contact the Marina office. 6

Wintering Ashore The Marina has storage ashore for approximately 180 vessels either in cradles or on shores. Our policy is to store vessels with masts down. Our winter tariff commences on 1st October and runs until 31st March. Water and electricity is available in all parts of the storage area. If you are interested in booking a winter or annual package please contact the Marina office. Lifting Facilities Our comprehensive lifting facilities can operate at most states of the tide. Our 40 ton Wise travel hoist is available for the larger beamier vessels and our original Wise travel hoist is able to lift vessels of up to 18 ton. An onsite derrick is available for the removal and stepping of masts. All these operations are covered by our ISO 9001 accreditation. Servicing and Repairs As an accredited ISO9001 Marina Services Business we offer a wide range of in house marine engineering and electrical repairs. In our 5000 sq. workshop we can work on up to six vessels in any weather. From engine refits, electrical work, hull repairs in wood, steel and GRP, stainless steel fabrication and rigging repairs. Varnishing and painting refurbishment both interior and exterior is undertaken as well, along with day-to-day running repairs and engine/outboard servicing. Our experienced team of full time personnel can offer advice on all aspects of maintenance and repairs to your vessel. We also offer services within the electrics and electronics. Ray Marine Dunstaffnage Marina is now a fully operating Ray Marine Dealer. We have a stand located within our shop & chandlery exhibiting some of the fantastic new equipment from the Ray Marine range. MARINA FACILITIES & INFORMATION Marina Office The Marina s main office is on the top floor above the Shop @ West Coast, which is prominently placed in the centre of the Marina. Registration of boats should be made on the day of arrival and all payments and enquiries can be made in the Shop @ West Coast reception. The Reception/Shop is open 7 days a week from 08.30 to 18.30 from mid-may to mid-august. Normal open hours are from 09.00 to 17.00. The Office is open from 09.00 to 17.00 Monday-Friday all year around. A listening watch on VHF Channel 37 (M1) is maintained during office hours. Security The Marina provides 24hr CCTV video security covering the Marina grounds, car parks, pontoons, shower and toilet block. A key entry system operates at the Marina for the pontoon gate (for your security, please close it after use). The key also opens the shower/toilet block and road barrier, these keys are available from the Marina reception for a 20 returnable deposit. Boat Keys & Mail We are happy to hold boat keys both for emergency purposes and access by third parties where we have been advised by prior notification. If your vessel is with us annually we ask you leave a spare set in the office should our Slip Team need to access it. We are also able to receive/hold/post any mail provided the postage is paid. Wi-Fi There is free Wi-Fi coverage on all the pontoons. This is available to all customers and the passcode can be obtained from the reception. Speed The speed in the bay is 4 knots. Please manoeuvre your boat with consideration for the other Marina users by not creating unnecessary wash. Visitors are asked to call the marina either by telephone or radio prior to arriving to be allocated a suitable berth. Booking forms and our current rates are available through the marina office. Showers, Toilets & Laundry The showers, toilets and laundry facilities are located on the ground floor of the Marina s main building along the concrete roadway in the direction of the workshop. These are fully accessible for the disabled. A magnetic key fob is required to gain access to the shower block; this can be acquired from the Shop @ West Coast for a 20 deposit. Laundry Facilities are coin operated. 9

Electricity Please ensure there are no live electricity cables lying on the pontoon, and avoid overloading the supply to your vessel because this can cause a fire or trip the switches. There are 16amp, 32amp and 64amp outlets available, if in doubt of your usage please ask a member of staff. The Marina does not permit the use of portable electric meters. This decision was taken due to the fire safety hazards surrounding them. Should you wish to use electricity, there is a compulsory set rate. Weather Forecast and Tide Table The daily weather forecasts and Tide Table can be found in the Shop @ West coast window display. Dinghies Dinghies should not be left on the pontoon walkways or in a vessels berth; if you need to leave your dinghy for an extended period it may be left in the locked Dinghy Store (code can be obtained from the shop reception). However, please note that the Marina will not take responsibility for it as the Dinghy Store is managed by the Dunstaffnage Bay Mooring Owners Association. Red Diesel Due to legislation regarding the resale and use of red diesel, we have had to prohibit the movement of red diesel on Marina property. We must ask all customers to sign a fuel declaration form when they purchase fuel and all fuel must be paid for at time of purchase. Customers handling petrol are requested to use extreme care at all times. Diesel is dispensed from the fuel hammerhead D, which is the 3rd hammerhead from the western end. Trolleys Trolleys are provided for the convenience of our customers and should be returned to the trolley park after use. The trolley park is located at the head of the gangway. Please avoid overloading your trolley, especially at low water as it can run away from you down the bridge. Children should not be allowed to play with these trolleys as accidents can happen! There are floats in the trolleys to aid with the recovery from the water should they fall in, please do not remove these. Please return your trolleys for other users of the Marina. Thank you. Pets Pets can be exercised within the Marina s grassed areas, but should at all times be kept under control. Please ensure that your pets do not foul the pontoons, grassed areas or car parks. We kindly ask owners to pick up any fouling. Heads Please do not use your vessel s WCs in the Marina. Our Facilities are available 24 hours a day. If you require a pump out facility, please see a member of staff in office for details. Waste Disposal Two skips are provided at the head of the gangway for the disposal of general waste. Please take extra care with your litter and rubbish to avoid damaging the environment. Colour coded glass bins are located there too. Disposal points for batteries, refrigerators and waste oil can be found adjacent to the green engineering workshop shed near the shop. Car Parking Entitlement Overnight stays of any duration will require a permit for which a charge will occur. Permits are available from the Shop @ West Coast. Berth holders and Mooring Association holders are entitled to two car parking passes per berth; parking is free for berth/mooring holders where such permits are displayed. Parking for day visitors to the marina is also free. If you would like to leave your car for short term storage when you are sailing, please inform office staff and we will provide a permit for a separate charge. 10

Well known in the trade for many years now, Mif worked here in his youth for a time before branching out on his own. DO NOT cut corners across the pontoons. Please remember alcohol can impair your ability to walk along the pontoons safely! We advise that lifejackets should be worn at ALL times. A general rule for any accident. If in doubt, dial 999 and request the relevant services. Safety Information We comply with recommended safety guidelines issued by the National Marina Federation. Lifebuoys and access points are provided at strategic points. However, the Marina pontoons float so due care must be taken. We recommend that children should always be in the company of an adult and everyone wear suitable life jackets when on the pontoons and on board any vessel. Berth holders should ensure that their guests are aware of safety considerations and we advise that the berth holder should accompany guests on the pontoons. The Marina is a sailing location and we strive to be better so it is natural that maintenance to the pontoons and other facilities will be on-going, so please take extra care. First Aid If you are in need of a first aider at work. Please contact the Marina office by phone, VHF or personally. One of our 10 certified First Aiders will be able assist. AED DEFIBRULATOR. This device is located at the shop/ reception door. Importantly, the shore side of the building. Emergency Tow The Marina has 3 operational work boats. Depending on the circumstances, these can be used by Marina staff to assist/recover vessels in need locally. If you require this service please contact the Marina office via phone or VHF Channel 37. Fire In the unlikely event of fire breaking out on the pontoons, get to safety then dial 999 for the Fire Brigade, the Coastguard can be alerted on Ch 16. Please alert the Marina Staff by calling on VHF Ch37 (M1) or calling 01631 566555. The pontoon area should be evacuated, all personnel should make their way ashore to the upper and lower car parks, but please do not impede the fire brigade. Our fire extinguishers are located on the pontoons; see the marina plan in this booklet to find your nearest fire point. Our conditions expect each vessel to carry at least one fire extinguisher approved to BS 5306, and are in good working order ready for immediate use. 16

RNLI Coastal Safety As a prospective or existing boat owner I am sure that you have supported the RNLI previously by putting money in a collection box. There is however even more options to help the RNLI to help you! Advice On board Why not have one of our volunteers come on board your boat and discuss your individual boats safety equipment confidentially and at your convenience. Calling for Help! Why not get some club mates or friends together and request an RNLI calling for help demo. These demos include instruction on how to fire flares, use a DSC VHF radio and many more modern and traditional ways of announcing you are in distress or require assistance. Man Overboard Demo Have you ever tried to get somebody back on board your boat? Why not give it a try on board your boat using different methods and a RNLI dummy. This demo can be done for individual boats and is best attended by all the crew. Sea Survival Demo What s it like to be in a life raft? If you hire the pool we can provide the life raft and qualified instructors to give you a taste of abandoning ship. To make it even more real why not wear a lifejacket and oilskins and discover what it is all really like. Project Kraken What is Project Kraken? Project Kraken delivers an enhanced crime and counter terrorist vigilance capability within the maritime environment of Scotland. It engages key stakeholders together with local communities to provide a hostile environment to terrorists and criminals looking to disrupt the everyday lives and safety of those who live, work, or travel through Scotland. Through enhanced criminal and counter terrorist awareness and a promotion in the exchange of information, Scotland can continue to be a safe place to live, work and relax for all. What to look for Filming adjacent to energy-related critical infrastructure, military bases, bridges and significant infrastructure. Filming security procedures whilst loitering around maritime facilities. Evasive answers to common boating questions; deliberate attempts to avoid contact with others or draw attention. Unusual activity, particularly late at night or early in the morning. Lack of or inappropriate equipment and knowledge for the environment. For example, boats moving at night with no navigational lighting; or crews of above average size, poor boat handling or inadequate dress. Insertion of strange objects into the waterways near bridges, pipes or critical infrastructure at unusual times or without normal support. Vessels entering designated maritime restricted areas (e.g. Adjacent to nuclear power plants, airports, etc.) or fishermen in non-typical locations. Suspicious characters or rentals. Someone asking to alter the usual route or trip a charter takes. Inappropriate large cash payments, daily extension of marina or port mooring. Efforts to gain employment at sensitive sites or with outside agencies who have access to potential targets. Deliberate recording of departure/docking procedures to include loading and off-loading of vehicles. Filming of security procedures/id checks within a ferry terminal facility. Suspicious craft in close proximity to vessels underway and at the docking facility. Attempts to abandon a vehicle on-board a ferry and walk ashore. Consecutive round trips on the same ferry. Persons walking around the vessel, independent of each other, taking notes ostensibly on operations and meeting as a group after their observations are recorded to compare notes. If you suspect it, report it Call Police Scotland on 101 and quote Project Kraken. 19

LOCAL HERITAGE & ADVENTURES The Castle across the Bay Dunstaffnage Castle dates back to the 13th century, making it one of Scotland s oldest stone castles in a local group which includes Castle Sween and Castle Tioram. The castle was built around 1220, probably by Duncan MacDougall, son of Dubhgall, Lord of Lorn, and grandson of the great Somerled King of the Isles. Mighty Dunstaffnage saw action during the Wars of Independence (1296 1356), and was famously besieged by King Robert Bruce in 1308, after his victory over the MacDougall s at the Pass of Brander, overlooking Loch Awe. Thereafter, Dunstaffnage remained a royal castle until it passed to the Campbell s, Earls of Argyll, in the 1460s. Late in 1746, Dunstaffnage welcomed one of its more famous guests, Flora MacDonald. This gentle-mannered lady was visiting her brother in South Uist when she met Bonnie Prince Charlie, then fleeing from the Redcoats following his defeat at Culloden in April. Flora agreed to help him escape, and dressed him up as her serving-girl, Betty Burke. Flora, however, was arrested and brought to Dunstaffnage. She remained there but a few days before being escorted to the Tower of London, where she was released the following year.
