The group is dedicated to the promotion and protection of children s rights and to the support of the vulnerable, widows and orphans. The group organizes routine trainings on farming for the widows and youths, promotes human values through advocacy and community out-reach programs e.g. jiggers eradication and treatment, education and financial support to the less fortunate members of society, in order to realize the full potential and capabilities of the community. The group has a small farm within the member s homestead where they rear local poultry for meat and eggs, cattle for resale, meat and milk and a small area for planting cash crop i.e. bananas, vegetables, tomatoes and fodder. The farm products are sold to the locals and in the local markets and some are distributed to the individuals, supported by the group. The money made is used to support the group s programs. The group also supports people with disabilities and distributes sanitary towels to girls in public schools within the community. CIVS will arrange accommodation before and after the workcamp in a host family in the Buruburu area of Nairobi. ACCOMMODATION AND SITES OF INTEREST Accommodation will be at the project in this workcamp and it is important that you have your own sleeping bag and mat. During the workcamp, volunteers will get food from locally available foodstuffs and the volunteers will share the responsibility of preparing the food. The volunteers can visit Kisumu city and have the opportunity to see Lake Victoria, Masai market, Kisumu Museum. The volunteers will also have the possibility to visit Kakamega rainforest, which is about one hour drive from Kisumu. CIVS/STV-02/2017 AHERO RESOURCE CENTRE WORKCAMP SUMMARY Project Name: Project Location: Orientation date: Ahero Resource Centre Kisumu County, Lake Victoria Region 04 th February 2017 from 10:00 am Start and End dates: 05 th February - 24 th February 2017 Safari dates: 01 st February - 03 rd February 2017 Theme: Sustainable community development No. of Volunteers: 10 20 PROJECT PROFILE The Ahero Resource Center is located in Ahero, about 25km east of Kisumu town. The Center serves as a One-Stop-Shop, offering a variety of services to the local community. The centre is equipped with a training facility to provide capacity building on Drought Resilient Agriculture, Entrepreneurship and Adult Education. The in-class training is complemented by practical learning on the adjacent Farmer Field School (Model Farm) which also encompasses a Greenhouse, Tree Nursery and Poultry Farm that provide practical examples of modern farming practices as well as a source of nutrition and income for the Orphan Feeding Program. The Ahero Resource Centre is also equipped with a comprehensive rainwater-harvesting infrastructure to fully utilize the short and heavy rains in the region. Additionally a borehole provides a reliable and affordable source of safe water for the community. From time to time, depending on the availability of funds, 30 school-going Orphans and Vulnerable Children get a free lunch at the center in order to improve their concentration and school performance. The Center also hosts a Community Bank offering financial services, tailored to the needs of the local community, including saving accounts or issuing loans to members. This boosts the economical activities of the over 150 bank members. Page 6 of 45

CIVS/STV-03/2017 MARIANNE CENTER WORKCAMP SUMMARY Project Name: Project Location: Orientation date: Marianne Center Kamirithu Village, Kiambu County of Kenya 04 th March 2017 from 10:00 am Start and End dates: 05 th March 24 th March 2017 Safari dates: 01 st March 03 rd March 2017 Theme: Supporting young adults with mental disability No. of Volunteers: 10 20 PROJECT PROFILE People with mental disabilities in Kenya (approximately 2.9 million) face special challenges in their lives. Many Kenyans still associate people who have mental disabilities with witchcraft, and little has been done to combat this stigmatization. Most people with mental disability have a mild to moderate mental retardation. However, they can learn and are capable of developing skills throughout their lives. They have a wide range of talents, which can possibly be discovered at any moment in their childhood. The major shortcomings of the current educational system for (young) adults with mental disabilities is that they are too old to be enrolled in a primary school, but mentally incapable of attending a normal secondary school. Because of that, the Marianne Center, started in the year 2010, focuses on people with mild to moderate mental disabilities, varying from Down Syndrome to Autism, from the age of 16 to 35 years. The training center for this group has given them and their parents hope for a better future. Currently, the center has 38 students. The students are divided into classes according to their abilities. The (young) adults are trained in basic life skills, vocational and income generating activities. At the end of the training, their capabilities are assessed and efforts are made for them to be attached to an employer where they get the possibility to perform basic tasks. The idea of this project is to make a difference in the life of young adults with special needs and disabilities, by making them self-reliant and by easing their integration into mainstream life without fear of stigmatization. CIVS/STV-04/2017 CUSTOMER ONGE NYIEGO WOMEN GROUP WORKCAMP SUMMARY Project Name: Project Location: Orientation date: Customer Onge Nyiego Women Group Ugunja, Kisumu County of Kenya 08 th April 2017 from 10:00 am Start and End dates: 09 th April 26 th April 2017 Safari dates: 05 th April 07 th April 2017 Theme: Sustainable community development No. of Volunteers: 5-15 PROJECT PROFILE Customer Onge Nyiego Women Group is a community group that was started in 2003 by women with common interests in the development of their local community and economic empowerment of the women located in North Uholo. The group has a total number of 25 members and is involved in organic farming for which they have leased land. They grow vegetables, maize and sweet potatoes which they later sell. Some of the food harvested in the farm is being used for the feeding program, which takes place every Saturday. Some of the orphans live in the group s home and others are accommodated in the group s nursery or the local primary school. All the children meet every Saturday where they play games and are provided with a meal. The group also engages in HIV/AIDS awareness raising campaigns for the local community. The project aims to create self-reliance through initiation of income generating activities and promotes affairs related to education in order to enlighten the community on the social issues affecting them. CIVS/STV-05/2017 KYALE SMALL HOME WORKCAMP SUMMARY Project Name: Project Location: Orientation date: Kyale Small Home Makueni County of Kenya, 06 th May 2017 from 10:00 am Start and End dates: 07 th May 26 th May 2017 Safari dates: 03 rd May 05 th May 2017 Theme: Supporting the physically challenged children No. of Volunteers: 10-20 PROJECT PROFILE Volunteer in Makueni County in Eastern Kenya and work with physically handicapped children in the Kyale Small Home. The institution consists of a school and a home, which has been in existence since 1994. A Primary School and Catholic Church surround this home, which currently houses 20 physically handicapped children. These kids are boys and girls aged between 10 to 19 years. They have suffered accidents, snakebites and Polio, were handicapped from or during birth, among other causes. The idea of this project is to make a difference in the life of children and young adults with special needs and disabilities in order to become self-reliant and integrated into mainstream life without fear of stigmatization. CIVS/STV-06/2017 COMMUNITY HEALTH VOLUNTEERS (CHV) WORKCAMP SUMMARY Project Name: Project Location: Orientation date: Community Health Volunteers (CHV) Vihrembe Market, Kakamega County 10 th June 2017 from 10:00 am Start and End dates: 11 th June 30 th June 2017 Safari dates: 07 th June 09 th June 2017 Theme: Provision of health services / conservation efforts No. of Volunteers: 10-20 PROJECT PROFILE Community Health Volunteers (CHV) was started with the aim of creating awareness on HIV/AIDS among the residents of Vihrembe area, as well as on issues of sexual and reproductive health. CHV is also actively involved in jigger eradication campaigns in the community. In addition, CHV educates the local community about the conservation of Kakamega Rainforest and its fragile ecosystem. The forest is home to many unique and rare animal and plant species but the increasing human population has exerted negative pressures to the forest, e.g. illegal logging, charcoal burning, cattle grazing, harvesting of medical plants and general clearing of the forest for agriculture. CHV involves the community in its preservation, ensuring the forest is cherished as a healthy, unique and diverse ecosystem for future generations. The idea of this project is to create awareness about the negative effects of jiggers on the health of local people. During the project period, while the trained members were visiting the community, they realized that there was a big health problem in the community. Apart from HIV/AIDS as the main problem, there were more health issues such as an increased number of orphans/vulnerable children and jiggers menace because of parents death from HIV/AIDS. Most orphans whose parents had died from HIV/AIDS were infected by jiggers, this was a result of poor guardian care. In general, these children lacked basic needs such as health care, shelter, education and clothing among others. Having realized that there were all of these problems within the community, a few trained local volunteers from Butula decided 2014 to establish a group, which could address the above mentioned health issues. The group was then referred to as Community Development Self-Help Group (CDG), operating within Butula Sub County with its main office at Shibale Market within Marachi central Ward, focusing on Health and community development. Its major objective is reaching out to community members and empowering the youth and marginalized community through provision of basic needs like education, health care, HIV/AIDS campaign awareness and offering vocational training to the youth living around the community. The organization manages a Primary School operating from grade one to eight. The school enrolls pupils who come from the surrounding local community and are from poor backgrounds. The institution also has a feeding program where the pupils can get their meals in order to focus on their education. It also has a vocational training centre that is used to train youths. It offers tailoring and carpentry, which aids them to acquire skills which will help them to better their lives and thus to become better persons in the community. Additionally, there is a dispensary where the local community members get access to health care. They also have a Voluntary Counseling Centre where they do counseling and testing of HIV, thus increasing the awareness of the youth and the community about the disease and teaching them to beware of the pandemic disease. PROJECT PROFILE IN KENYA People with mental disabilities in Kenya (approximately 2.9 million) face special challenges in their lives. Many Kenyans still associate people who have mental disabilities with witchcraft, and little has been done to combat this stigmatization. Most people with mental disability have a mild to moderate mental retardation. However, they can learn and are capable of developing skills throughout their lives. They have a wide range of talents, which can possibly be discovered at any moment in their childhood. The major shortcomings of the current educational system for (young) adults with mental disabilities is that they are too old to be enrolled in a primary school, but mentally incapable of attending a normal secondary school. Because of that, the Marianne Center, started in the year 2010, focuses on people with mild to Page 31 of 45
moderate mental disabilities, varying from Down Syndrome to Autism, from the age of 16 to 35 years. The training center for this group has given them and their parents hope for a better future. Currently, the center has 38 students. The students are divided into classes according to their abilities. The (young) adults are trained in basic life skills, vocational and income generating activities. At the end of the training, their capabilities are assessed and efforts are made for them to be attached to an employer where they get the possibility to perform basic tasks. The idea of this project is to make a difference in the life of young adults with special needs and disabilities, by making them self-reliant and by easing their integration into mainstream life without fear of stigmatization. Through the production of the organic food, the group members are able to improve their farming technique, which in turn promotes the income generating activities of the community at large thus boosting food security and discouraging deforestation. The institution consists of a school and a home, which has been in existence since 1994. A Primary School and Catholic Church surround this home, which currently houses 20 physically handicapped children. These kids are boys and girls aged between 10 to 19 years. They have suffered accidents, snakebites and Polio, were handicapped from or during birth, among other causes. The idea of this project is to make a difference in the life of children and young adults with special needs and disabilities in order to become self-reliant and integrated into mainstream life without fear of stigmatization.
