Ecological Importance of Area 1. Within the Mesoamerican Biological Hotspot One of twenty five areas of the world being recognized by Conservation International and other organizations as holding most of the Earth s biodiversity. Mesoamerica contains some of the highest biodiversity levels in the world, containing about 8% of the world s known species in only 0.51% of the Earth s surface. There are at least 42 mammals, 31 birds, and 1,541 plants in the area that are endangered. This area is an important wildlife corridor and bird migration route. For more info on the Mesoamerican Biological Hotspot, please visit: www.biodiversityhotspots.org/xp/hotspots/mesoamerica/pages/default.aspx 2. Within the Path of the Tapir Biological Corridor (Paso de La Danta Corredor Biologico) An area identified by ASANA and others as critical for endangered species habitat, such as tapirs, squirrel monkeys, giant anteaters, and jaguars. The corridor is a regional initiative aimed at reestablishing a communication route for the flora and fauna of the forests of the Los Santos Forest Reserve and the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park. A study by the Nature Conservancy shows that this area is home to an amazing number of species endemic to Costa Rica: 6 plants and trees, 6 reptiles and amphibians, 13 fish, and one mammal. For more information on the Path of the Tapir, read The Path of the Tapir by Quint Newcomer, Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies or visit ASANA s website at: www.asanacostarica.com/biological-corridors 3. Within the Savegre Watershed The Spanish government, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), InBio, CEDARENA and the National Museum of Costa Rica conducted a 5 year intensive study on the Savegre Watershed from 1999-2003 and from their research and findings, they have recognized this watershed as being one of the most biodiverse areas of Costa Rica. With only 1.15% of the national territory, the Savegre Watershed contains approximately 20% of all the country s registered species. View additional information and maps on following slides.

Ecological Importance of Area 4. On the Southern border of the Los Santos Forest Reserve Created in November of 1975, this reserve totals 153,000 acres of pre-montane and montante rainforest. Pre-montane forests are the second most endangered life zones in Costa Rica, after tropical dry forests. The Los Santos Forest Reserve (The Saints) is a protected area north of Buenaventura & Pueblo Nuevo Eco-Village with protected primary (virgin) and secondary Tropical Cloud Forests and Humid Rain Forests where hundreds of bird species, wild animals including Jaguars, Tapirs, Sloths and Monkeys and plant species live on the western mountain tops and valleys of the Talamanca Corridor. 40% of Buenaventura s 160 acres are located inside the Los Santos Forest Reserve. Pueblo Nuevo Eco-Village is located directly across from the Los Santos Forest Reserve. For more info on the Los Santos Forest Reserve, please visit: www.costarica-nationalparks.com/lossantosforestreserve.html Buenaventura & Pueblo Nuevo

Ecological Importance of Area 5. Savegre Watershed is being proposed as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization) Work is afoot to explore the possibilities to declare the Savegre Watershed a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve. This type of international protected area status does not seek to prevent development, but instead explicitly looks for ways to benefit local communities while conserving significant natural resources. - Dominical Days March 2011 Issue The first community meeting was organized on Saturday, February 26th in San Isidro where members of the community gathered to listen to a presentation by ASANA and other local NGOs involved in the the proposed biosphere reserve. About UNESCO Biosphere Reserves: Biosphere reserves are sites established by countries and recognized under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme to promote sustainable development based on local community efforts and sound science. As places that seek to reconcile conservation of biological and cultural diversity and economic and social development through partnerships between people and nature, they are ideal to test and demonstrate innovative approaches to sustainable development from local to international scales. For more info on the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, please visit: www.unesco.org/new/en/natural-sciences/environment/ecological-sciences/biosphere-reserves/

About the Eco-Developer / Buenaventura Proprietor & Host Harlow Salvador Newton A true socially responsible entrepreneur at heart, Harlow has more than 20 years of experience as a business owner, from opening the first Reggae club on the island of Guam back in the early 90s, to being one of the founding partners at SF Station, to starting an environmental non-profit focused on preserving Costa Rica s rainforests and cultural heritage. After building one of the very first online city guides in the San Francisco Bay Area from the ground up with his 4 partners from 1996 to 2005, Harlow and his partners sold SF Station to Boulevards New Media, Inc. in October of 2005 for $3 Million USD. Boulevards is the largest operator of online city guides under high-ranking, deeply intuitive "cityname.com" URLs including LosAngeles.com, SanFrancisco.com, Seattle.com, Denver.com, Houston.com, and WashingtonDC.com. Since the acquisition, Harlow took on the role as the National Sales & Marketing Director for Boulevards. During his 10 years with SF Station, Harlow built and established long-term business relationships and strategic partnerships with local businesses, event promoters/producers, media companies, and community and public organizations. With a rolodex of over 8,000 contacts, Harlow developed unique and innovative business partnerships, brand awareness campaigns and digital marketing programs for his clients and strategic partners, including working with some of the top advertising and marketing agencies like Avenue A/Razorfish, Carat, OMD, Blitz Media, CENTRO, and Wieden + Kennedy, and ad networks like Casale Media, ContextWeb, Advertising.com, and 24/7 Real Media. Some of the accounts and campaigns Harlow has worked on include Virgin America Airlines, Zipcar, Starbucks, Naked Juice, JW Marriott, Toyota, GAP, Zagat, and Budweiser, the "King of Beers". His most recent projects include Buenaventura, an eco-adventure lodge and rainforest rejuvenation center he began building in 2002 on his 160 acre riverfront property in the Savegre Watershed valley of Costa Rica. In January 2009, he founded and began working on BuenaTierra, a sustainable and socially responsible eco-realty & land management company, with a focus on investment properties, sustainable community development projects, and property management & relocation services in Costa Rica, Uruguay, Ecuador and Argentina and other Latin American countries. His first project is Pueblo Nuevo Eco- Village directly across from his retreat center Buenaventura. Harlow studied business, public relations and psychology at San Francisco State University through an interdisciplinary studies program, leaving academia behind in his senior year to start up SF Station and ultimately get his "tenure" in New Media through real-life working experiences. Harlow loves to travel, collect antiquities, spend time with his family, host guests at his eco-lodge in Costa Rica, and inspire others to follow their dreams.

Contact Information If you would like additional information or would like to set up an appointment to come see the properties in Pueblo Nuevo Eco-Village, please contact Harlow Salvador Newton by e-mail or phone. Harlow also owns and operates a travel services company called Tico Guide Travel, so if you are coming from outside of Costa Rica, he can help you arrange travel including air, ground transfers/car rental, lodging, and other travel logistics.
