HAVASU FALLS SPRING BREAK TRIP IU Outdoor Adventures uses the W.I.S.E layering system. This stands for Wicking, Insulation, Shell, & Extra Layers. It is designed to keep you safe and comfortable in the outdoors. Highlighted items are optional items.. Your trip leader will debrief and emphasis what to bring during the pre-trip meeting. If you do not own them personally, check with your local outdoor center, or purchase them at any local stores. Please feel free to ask questions regarding clothing & equipment at any time. Wicking Layer - Lower Body Hiking Socks Mid to Heavy Weight socks. Be sure to allow good wiggle room in your boots or shoes. Too heavy of a sock which constricts toe movement is counter productive to warm feet. NO COTTON! Preferably synthetic, wool, blend Sleeping Socks Light to Mid Weight socks which are kept in your sleeping bag (dry and warm). Nothing better then warm dry socks for a warm restful nights sleep. Preferably synthetic, wool, blend Underwear Most adventurers wear undergarments underneath their base layer and rotate every few days for freshness. Preferably synthetics 2 or 3 N/A Wicking Layer - Upper Body Short Sleeve T-Shirt Insulating Layer - Upper Body Mid-weight pullover A short-sleeved (not sleeveless) synthetic T-Shirt to wear hiking, in camp, and sleep in. Consider bringing 1 for the day, 1 for the nighttime. This lightweight insulating layer is all most desire while on the move. A wool sweater or lightweight fleece work best. Avoid windproof fleece which are not breathable enough. Synthetic, blends Fleece, Wool Light Puffy / Vest This extra layer of warmth is perfect for the "in between seasons" by adding warmth to your layering system with little weight. Fill s: Primaloft, down Shell Layer - Lower Body Shell / Rain Pants Waterproof/breathable; this lightweight yet durable shell will protect from rain, wind, and snow. These are different from rain slickers or tyvek pants (Aka: Frogs Toggs). This shell should be sized to comfortably fit over your other base and insulating (second) layer. Goretex, event, h2no, or similar

Nylon or Synthetic Hiking Shorts Loose fitting nylon, synthetic athletic shorts or hiking/ river shorts. Nylon or Synthetic Hiking Pants Breathable, synthetic hiking pants can protect from the sun and sharp plants but still provide cool body temperatures on hot days. Shell Layer - Upper Body Shell / Rain Jacket with hood Waterproof/breathable; this lightweight yet durable shell should have large pit-zips and be extremely lightweight and packable. This shell should be sized to comfortably fit over your base, second and midlayers (minus your insulating layer). Simple is best. Avoid extra pockets but have a good sized hood. Goretex, event, h2no, or similar Extra Clothing Nylon/Wool Blends Warm Hat A lightweight hat for use anytime the tempurature drops. A warm hat is critical for maintaining proper warmth especially at night. "Buff"/Balaclava Buffs are a multifunctional neck gaiter that can substitute for a lightweight hat, earmuffs, or headband on a hot day. They're also great sun protection. Polyester Swimsuit OR Comfortable clothes to swim in We'll be spending a lot of time hiking to and from great swimming holes - make sure it's something supportive and comfortable enough to wear on short hikes. N/A Sun Hat Baseball cap or visor. We'll be in the sun often and need to protect ourselves. Cotton / Polyester Mesh Footwear Camp Shoes Camp shoes should be comfortable, durable and light weight. Old Tennis Shoes or anything with a good sole will do. Tevas, Keens or Chacos work well. Flip flops are not acceptable. Crocs are perfect for the warmer/dryer seasons. Boots Medium Weight to heavy backpacking boots. Boots should be well broken in prior to the trip. Gaiters Calf/knee height. Check the fit of the gaiter to your boot in advance. Great for keeping sand, rocks, etc. out of your boots. Sleeping Gear

Closed Cell Foam Insulation Pad OR Inflatable Sleeping Pad Sleeping Bag A basic closed cell foam pad will be used for added insulation on cold thorn covered ground. OR A lightweight inflatable pad. Bring a patch kit for inflatable pads. Minumum rating of 20 F. Down is lighter but requires more care to keep dry than synthetic.and bulk, but more expensive and it requires more care to keep dry. Down, Primaloft, Polarguard 3D, Synthetic Sleeping Bag Compression Sack Used to shrink your sleeping bag into the smallest size possible for packing into a backpack. SilNylon, event, or similar Pillow Perfect for car camping, we recommend leaving It in the vehicle when we hit the trail in order to save pack space. Eating/Drinking Utensils Eating Bowl with lid A lightweight Tupperware-type bowl is acceptable. Should have a lid. Drinking Mug A 16-20oz insulationed mug with a lid is ideal for hot drinks at meal time and just before bed. Pocket Knife / Leatherman A small pocket knife or multi-tool supports the main tasks of cooking and gear repair. Spoon/Spork Lexan or metal soup spoon. Large spoons are best on hungry evenings. Sporks are even better! Water Bottles 3 liters of water capacity minimum. Solid 32oz water bottle, such as a Nalgene, are required. Hydration bladders are not recommended for late seasons due to freezing of drink tubes. 3 N/A Misc. Equipment Emergency Whistle An emergency distress whistle is recommended for each person on the trip in case of emergency. Headlamp Go for something lightweight and adjustable. You should have this for seeing at night, cooking, or just hanging out at camp. Extra Batteries You should bring extra batteries for your headlamp. Make sure you purchase the correct size, usually either AA or AAA. Bandanas An adventurers best simple accessory. These have multiple uses in the backcountry.

Sunglasses Choose a model with 100% UVA/UVB protection. Note: Those using contact lenses should also bring a pair of prescription glasses in the event that your contacts or solutions are lost or damaged by freezing. Travel Games Any travel size games that are light weight and could be fun to play around the camp at night. A deck of cards or other small game would work great. Keep these games light so your pack stays light! Watch Basic wrist watch with alarm is required for each person on the course. Journal & Pen - Travel Sized Great way to write down what you've learned, what you saw, and what you experienced. Compactor Bag Two or three large compactor bags. These work well for pack-liners, and separating wet or dirty clothes. 3 N/A Personal Supplies Personal Eyecare/Eye Wear Bring extra pairs of contacts in case you lose some or they freeze. Bring glasses for nighttime and around camp. Sun Block - Travel Size With a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. For the fair skinned, the higher the SPF the better. A couple of small containers are better than one large one. Lip Balm Zinc oxide works well (available in pharmacies) as does some models of chapstick that have SPF15 or higher. Personal Toiletries - Travel Sized Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, Dr. Bronner's soap, finger nail clippers, travel size hand lotion, tampons and duct-tape covered zip lock bags to carry them out Hand Sanitizer - Travel Sized Require for use before meals and after restroom visits. Critical for health of group. Recommend small travel size. Handi Wipes/Baby Wipes For personal hygiene and general use. Recommend one per day. Foot Powder A very small bottle will allow you to treat your feet daily, keep them dryer, extend the life of your socks, and help you avoid blisters/rashes from chronic wet feet. Misc. Extras (Recommendations) Camp Chair A camp chair is excellent for sitting around a campfire, cooking and eating meals, relaxing at camp, and taking notes/journaling.

Day Pack This will be very useful on day hikes/exploration days. Make sure it is compressible and/or does not take up much room in your pack. Flannel or Fleece PJ Pants For a cozy nights sleep inside your bag. Optional, but a "nice to have trick" by some adventurers. Ear Plugs Defense against snoring tent mates and high winds in the area. Camera Recommend small cameras that can easily be carried in an outside pocket or small case outside your pack. Note: If bringing a digital camera, consider your battery needs. Waterproof Camera Case This is great for when you drop your camera in the river or your boat flips.
