KILIMANJARO Marangu Route

Kilimanjaro Tanzania - home to Africa s highest peak - is a popular East African destination for visitors, it has many natural attractions including Zanzibar, Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Tanzania is a large country and its infrastructure is fragmented making it time-consuming to travel around. Tanzanians have a very friendly reputation and other than petty theft, violent crime is quite rare. The country is mountainous in the northeast, where Mt. Kilimanjaro is situated. Three of Africa s Great Lakes are partly within Tanzania. To the north and west lie Lake Victoria, Africa s largest lake, and Lake Tanganyika, the continent s deepest lake, known for its unique species of fish. To the southwest lies Lake Nyasa. Central Tanzania is a large plateau, with plains and arable land. The eastern shore is hot and humid, with the Zanzibar Archipelago just offshore. Tanzania s numerous parks and reserves offer many climbing options for the avid explorer. Hiking trips and mountain climbing in Tanzania is becoming a popular option for visitors not content to observe the country from the back of a game viewing vehicle. Instead, adventurous types are taking advantage of the many trails and peaks Tanzania has to offer. Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highlight of most visitors experiences in Tanzania. Few mountains can claim the grandeur, the breath-taking views of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, the Rift Valley and the Masaai Steppe that belongs to Kilimanjaro. Hiking on the rooftop of Africa - the highest point on the continent at 5896 metres is the adventure of a lifetime. This is especially because, if paced well, everyone from seasoned trekkers to first-time enthusiasts can scale the snowy peak.

DAY I - Depart the UK. DAY 2 - Grab some last-minute supplies and soak up a bit of the Tanzanian culture. meet our trek guides. have a tour of the Moshi town and see some of the real Tanzania. We ll head back to the hotel and have an early night before starting the trek in the morning. DAY 3 - After breakfast, we ll load the kit up, and you ll be driven to Marangu Park Gate. We ll get all the necessary paperwork done, and then meet the porters. Fingers crossed we ll get to see the Colobus Monkeys as we journey upwards!generally, the walk takes about half a day. Visit Maundi Crater. some brilliant wild flowers and superb views of Kibo and Mawenzi. DAY 4 - Today we ll start moving out of the forest and before too long we ll notice the Kifinika Hill on our left and intermittent views of Mawenzi and Kibo too. We ll stop for a picnic lunch at Kambi Ya Taabu. We ll arrive at Horombo Huts in the middle of the afternoon, spend some time chilling out and then have dinner together. ITINERARY DAY 5 - Today we have an acclimatisation day. Generally, we recommend the saddle walk - the views of Kibo and Mawenzi are amazing and the ascent and descent to Zebra Rock is just what your body needs. If we set off nice and early we ll still have the rest of the afternoon to relax and sort out kit. Remember to bring a book for this day! DAY 6 - We ll get to Kibo Hut by early afternoon, and then take a well-earned rest to recharge your batteries ahead of the night s summit attempt. This is the moment to get prepared. Purify your water, put new batteries in your camera and head torch, pack your snacks and get ready. DAY 7 - It s time to get serious. You ll be woken around midnight, and we ll be trekking through the night. It gives us time to try and reach the summit and still descend in the daylight. Remember to layer up - it WILL be cold, but you ll need to remove layers later in the day.the first half of this ascent is on steep winding rocky path, where we ll maintain a very slow, but steady pace. As we near the crater rim, the sun will raise your morale and body temperature. From Gilman s Point, it takes another 1½ to 2 hours to Uhuru Peak (5895m), although the gradients are much gentler and terrain easier. Standing on the summit will have made the last 10-12 hours worthwhile! After hitting the summit, we head back down to Horombo Hut for a wellearned rest! DAY 8 - Today is the final day on the mountain. We head from Horombo back to the Marangu Park Gate (1900m). We take the short drive back to the hotel for a wellearned HOT shower and celebratory evening meal. DAY 9 - After a relaxing morning, (in a proper bed!), it s time to think about the trip home or where you re heading next. A lot of people choose to combine their Kilimanjaro trip with another African adventure, so if you want to go on safari, head to Zanzibar and hit the beach or learn to scuba dive, you ll have the opportunity to do so. DAY 10 - Return to the UK.

WEATHER Tanzania has a generally comfortable, tropical climate year-round, although there are significant regional variations. Along the warmer and humid coast, the climate is determined in large part by the monsoon winds, which bring rains in two major periods. The rainy season is March to May, it rains heavily almost every day. Short rains fall during November, December and sometimes into January. The central plateau is somewhat cooler and arid, while in the mountainous areas of the northeast and southwest, temperatures occasionally drop below 15 C at night during June and July, and it can rain at any time of year.
