The show rules and GENERAL MEETING KCDS ANNUAL PICNIC Our annual picnic will be this Thursday, July 16th, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Brownsville Marina Pavillion. This is always a fun event and we hope to see everyone there. The club will provide the hamburgers, hot dogs, condiments and drinks. Drew has volunteered to grill for us again this year and members are asked to bring their favorite side dish or dessert. Friends and family are welcome to come and enjoy a beautiful summer evening on the water! BJ s Reina MS, L Accredited ADS judge, Art Wuerth gave a very informative presentation at the June general meeting-telling us why and how he grows dahlias in pots. Mr. Wuerth has several thousand dahlias growing in pots and has successfully kept some in the same pot for many years! 2015 KCDS Dahlia Show horticultural sections common to all shows are listed on the FNWDG website. www.nwdahlia.org Your help is needed to set up for the show on Friday, July 31st at 4:00 PM and also to take down the tables after the show on Sunday around 4:30 PM. We also need a couple more volunteers to help out at the hospitality/info table. See Wanda or Jean at the picnic to sign up. 1

Dan will prepare a flyer and email out to club members to post and provide to nursing homes. Dan will check with the Kitsap County Fair personnel to firm up their requirements for club members to help in classification of dahlias during the fair. The Silverdale Post Office work party is coming up on July 22nd. Tasks to be accomplished include clearing the paths between the beds, weeding and tying up dahlias. Drew and Dan will check on the watering system as the dahlias looked dry. The timer may need to be adjusted to accommodate the extreme heat and dry weather. Discussion on installing raised beds next year for our gardens at Pt. Gamble was tabled. Bill felt that the current beds were working well, and there was no need for raised beds at this time. Drew will not be able to make the Federation meeting on July 18th. He is looking for someone to take his place at that meeting. The club insurance has been paid $100.00 through ADS. 2
Getting Seed from your Summer Garden to Make Seedlings for Next Year By Leone Smith Getting seed from the summer garden is the start of developing a new dahlia cultivar. Some new dahlias come from seed gathered informally by cutting pods off of random plants in the garden. This is a perfectly good way to begin the practice. A better way is to focus your seed gathering on target dahlias. We attempt to get seed from plants we admire for their FORM, COLOR, or their ability to last several days as a CUT Flower. To increase chances of getting good seed we try to plant things down the row that we hope to cross. When you watch the bees work you will see that they do not flit about, rather they travel in straight lines, going from flower to flower. You can see the pollen collect on their back legs. They are very efficient in their work. We mark some plants for seed collection and avoid deadheading a few stems in order for these plants to make seed pods. When these seed pods have closed and feel full and firm we cut the stems, tagging them with the mother plant s name and set the pods to dry. Later on, we shuck out the seed and store it in envelopes with the mother plants name on each envelope. Therefore, you may want to begin early in the season leaving a few stems for seed rather than deadheading everything. The major difficulty is getting seed from the fully double dahlias. A tip to help here is to pluck some back petals from the blooms in order to give the center more room to open, and thus allow the bees better access. Getting singles is no problem as the bees love the ease of getting to their centers. Some people do not allow open center flowers in their garden. Others have separate patches for singles. Lately we have planted a few varieties in the field apart from the main garden. That is, we have a small area for waterlily dahlias and a small area for cactus types, etc. Good luck. Have fun with this. We used to hear that only 1 seedling plant in 100 would be worth saving. But we know that you can do much better than that with just a little effort.
