Overview The Family and Consumer Science Program (FCSP) is one of the Programmatic Areas within the Agricultural Extension Services at the University of Puerto Rico. Nutrition, Food Safety and EFNEP (Extended food and Nutrition Education Program- for nutrition at-risk Communities) are programs within FCSP intended to improve the quality of life and nutrition knowledge for low income communities through non-formal nutrition education, community outreach, engagement and empowerment. On August 2013, our Nutrition Program joined www.foodday.org to promote healthy eating practices for the families in Puerto Rico. 2
Food Day Campaign 2013 in Puerto Rico Focus areas for healthy eating and nutrition education in Puerto Rico are: Childhood Obesity Prevention Food sustainability Healthy eating practices Physical activity promotion Main Goal: To impact all age groups-children, teenagers, adults, and elderly living in the Island on healthy eating practices and obesity prevention awareness. 3
National Food Day Celebration in Puerto Rico The Agricultural Extension Services/University of Puerto Rico promoted extensively the National Food Day Celebration, which included: Development and Distribution of more than 2,000 Posters to Malls, supermarkets, schools and universities, health centers, day cares, and sports centers. Radio Messages Book marks, flyers and brochures Special events: (direct interventions) Parades Booths and food display School Projects Field Days Little chefs and Recipe preparations 4
Accomplishments of the National Food Day Campaign in Puerto Rico Community outreach through direct service from FCSP/Agricultural Extension Services Impacted around 1,500 citizens (preschoolers, elementary and middle school students, parents, teachers, caregivers, adults and elderly) through direct interventions. Impacted more than 3,000 people through written communications Impacted more than 2,000 people through oral communications Other organizations involved Government agencies were involved and celebrated a Healthy Breakfast sponsored by the First Lady of Puerto Rico Non-profit organizations such as Pediatric Obesity Prevention Liaison, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics- PR Chapter joined the campaign Public schools, hospitals and outpatient clinics College and Universities Dietetic Accredited Internships 5

Conclusion National Food Day was a success in Puerto Rico, Outreach campaign impacted elderly, children and adults throughout the Island by hands-on activities, parades, nutrition lessons, written educational materials, radio and TV shows, Topics on food groups selection, fruits and vegetables consumption, gardening, importance of breakfast, healthy snacking and avoiding sugary foods targeted the mayor concerns on Puerto Rican population, People committed to follow healthy eating practices through a Healthy Eating Pledge, Agricultural Extension Services Program at the University of Puerto Rico will continue celebrating Food Day activities every year. 41
