Proposal to Obtain Fire Prevention Equipment / Props Issue Currently the firefighters of our department are asked to participate in many different community events, organization festivities and special appearances. When we got to these events, at the current time we do not have much if anything to educate the children other than a tour of the fire trucks, trying on our gear and literature. We would like to expand our current fire prevention capabilities and hopefully reach more children with more interaction. In addition to these responsibilities we are also asked to do extinguisher trainings for several organizations as well. Proposal Purchase several new fire prevention props and equipment Approval is being sought for the purchase of several different fire prevention props and equipment. After extensive market research we feel that the cost-benefit analyses of these props are well worth the outward expense. These props will be utilized in many different situations to reach out to the community and educate both children and adults on fire prevention principles. Each of these props will be able to provide multiple years of utilization in this capacity. Rationale Upon arriving at community events it is the responsibility of the firefighters to not only entertain but educate the children and adults in a manner that will provide necessary and lifesaving information. This can be accomplished a multitude of ways, but as we know hands on experiences along with educational information assists in reinforcing principles. By having an inflatable smoke house that can be easily transported and setup at these events it provides an opportunity to visually demonstrate how to exit a home that is filled with smoke. In addition to this the windows can be closed and smoke generators utilized to actually fill the house with safe smoke to further simulate the situation. This will give as close to a real life experience as we can provide safely. The smoke generators can also double in a capacity for the fire department trainings such as ventilation and search and rescue exercises. This will give both senior firefighters and new recruits a diminished visibility more true to real life when doing practical exercises. The spray houses will provide an interactive experience for children at different events where they can actually spray water at flames on a home. We can have them experience what it is like to handle a small hose line and spray water. This will be another experience that we feel children will enjoy and help drive home the experience of being around firefighters and remembering what they were told while doing the activity. We do a lot of events coordinated with the town such as Four for the Fourth, the Fireworks Festival, and the Shamrock Run. We also interact with all the schools for fire prevention week and other organizations like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Each of these different organizations and events could benefit from these items. Finally, we are being asked to do several fire extinguisher trainings for employees to prepare them if needed. Some examples of this are different day cares and the school bus drivers. By having the burn pan we will be able to provide hands on experiences to supplement the educational programs we prepare for the classroom. This burn pan also allows our department to meet OSHA requirements for fire extinguisher trainings that can be implemented for our local businesses.
