AEGEAN ODYSSEY ATHENS TO ISTANBUL ABOARD SEA CLOUD II JUNE 6 TO 14, 2012

Dear National Trust Travelers, Join us for a delightful springtime voyage through the Greek isles and along the coast of Turkey to discover the well-preserved ruins of ancient civilizations. The elegant sailing yacht, Sea Cloud II slips easily into the small harbors and shallow bays of the Aegean Sea, and will carry us to some of the most important sites of antiquity. Architectural historian, consultant on Heritage Conservation Services, former director of the National Trust s Southern Office and favorite lecturer John Meffert leads this program. Sea Cloud II calls first at the lovely port town of Nafplion on the Greek Peloponnese to see the ruins of Epidaurus, with its perfectly preserved 2,500-year-old amphitheater. Under billowing white sails, travel through the Cyclades islands to Syros, to spend the day in the charming town of Ermoupolis, where a viewing of El Greco s icon The Assumption of the Virgin Mary will be a highlight. On Patmos, where St. John the Evangelist is said to have written the Book of the Apocalypse, visit the grotto and hilltop Monastery of St. John on this pristine island. As we continue along the Turkish coast, discover the magnificent site of Ephesus, whose temples and houses still display their original mosaics, and the ancient Greco-Roman city of Pergamon. Step ashore on the lush Greek island of Mytilini (Lesbos) to enjoy its seaside cafes and perhaps visit the excellent Archaeological Museum. Sea Cloud II then navigates the Dardanelles and Sea of Marmara to arrive at the extraordinary city of Istanbul with its spectacular skyline of domes and minarets. GREECE Aegean Sea Dardanelles TURKEY Istanbul Sea of Marmara TURKEY The luxurious Sea Cloud II combines comfort and a casual atmosphere with fine service. Tasteful surroundings and five-star dining complement the experience of traveling under wind-lofted sails. We hope to welcome you aboard for this memorable voyage. Sincerely, Mytilini Pergamum Dikili Athens GREECE Nafplion Syros Patmos Ephesus Kusadasi Scott Gerloff Director, National Trust Tours The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to saving historic places and revitalizing America s communities. A E G E A N O DY S S E Y Athens to Istanbul Aboard Sea Cloud II June 6 to 14, 2012 SYROS, GREECE Saturday, June 9 After a relaxing morning at sea, step ashore on Syros, known for its unspoiled landscape and traditional villages. The capital city of Ermoupoli is also the capital of all the Cyclades and boasts striking Venetian and neoclassical architecture, including the Town Hall, Cathedral of St. Nicholas and Apollan Theater, the first opera house of Greece. At the Church of the Assumption, view El Greco s icon The Assumption of the Virgin Mary, from 1865. There will be time at leisure to browse the charming streets of Ermoupoli. The ampitheater of Epidaurus. PATMOS, GREECE Sunday, June 10 Call this morning at the island of Patmos, where St. John the Evangelist is said to have written the Book of the Apocalypse. Visit the Grotto of St. John, a small cave converted into a beautiful chapel. Continue to the Monastery of St. John to see its religious art and manuscripts. Return to Sea Cloud II for lunch and a swim stop as we cruise to Turkey. NEW YORK 1 ATHENS, GREECE Wednesday, June 6 Depart New York on an overnight flight to Athens. ATHENS 1 SEA CLOUD II Thursday, June 7 Arrive in Athens and transfer to Piraeus where we will have lunch at a local seaside restaurant before embarking Sea Cloud II. Enjoy a champagne toast as we cruise out of the harbor in the early evening light. NAFPLION, GREECE Friday, June 8 Attend a morning lecture as we sail the Mediterranean. After lunch on board, step ashore at the beautiful port of Nafplion on the Greek Peloponnese. A walking tour includes the narrow streets of the Old Town, which are lined with elegant Venetian houses and neoclassical mansions. Drive to the nearby ruins of Epidaurus which, according to Greek mythology, was the birthplace of Asclepius, god of healing and son of Apollo. The site later became one of the most important centers of healing in the ancient world. Visit the World Heritage Site of the Epidaurus Theater, with its beautifully preserved amphitheater built 2,500 years ago and still hosting Greek dramas today. In the evening, join the captain for a festive welcome dinner. St. John of Patmos.

KUSADASI, TURKEY Monday, June 11 Arrive this morning in Kusadasi and drive to Ephesus, one of the best-preserved sites from antiquity. See temples and houses with their original mosaics and fountains; the reconstructed Library of Celsus, originally built in 114 C.E., and the odeon, where audiences of more than 2,000 once gathered to hear poetry readings and music. Return to the ship for lunch and an afternoon sail along the Turkish coast. Colorful port of Mytilini (Lesbos). AT SEA Wednesday, June 13 During an idyllic day at sea, watch as the ship s crew trim the sails by hand, attend a lecture, or perhaps relax on deck with a good book. Weather permitting, there will be an opportunity to swim in the Aegean. In the evening, join the captain for our farewell dinner. ISTANBUL, TURKEY 1 NEW YORK Thursday, June 14 Disembark Sea Cloud II this morning in Istanbul and transfer to the airport for the flight home. Alternatively, remain in Istanbul for the optional postlude. n Library of Celsus, Ephesus. DIKILI, TURKEY 1 MYTILINI, GREECE Tuesday, June 12 From the port of Dikili drive to Pergamon, the ancient Graeco-Roman city that was home to the great physician, Galen. Visit the site of the vast Altar of Zeus and continue to the extensively restored asklepion, an ancient medical center that includes a library and theater. Return to Sea Cloud II for lunch as we cruise to Mytilini (Lesbos). The third largest of the Greek islands (after Crete and Evia), Mytilini has long been a prominent intellectual center in the Aegean. During an afternoon at leisure, stroll the pedestrian streets of the old market, with its variety of shops and local vendors, or visit the Archaeological Museum near the harbor. After dinner on board, you may wish to return to shore to enjoy an evening ouzo with local residents in one of Mytilini s many quaint cafes. Traditional Iznik tiles, Turkey.

No refunds are given for cancellation on day of departure or after, or for unused portions of tour. Trip cancellation insurance is strongly recommended. Air cancellation penalties will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations. NOTE: Neither the National Trust for Historic Preservation nor AAA accepts liability for any airline cancellation penalties incurred with the purchase of non-refundable tickets. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. The right is reserved by AAA to cancel any tour prior to departure for any reason. In such case, refund of the cost of the trip shall constitute full settlement with the passenger. RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The National Trust for Historic Preservation, in order to make an educational opportunity available to its members, has arranged for AAA to organize our tour and procure carriage, accommodations and other tour services from other parties. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the passengers. However, when the tour departs the U.S., no refund can be made for any feature of the program not used by the passenger during operation of the tour. The agent reserves the right to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the tour at any time. In such case the refund will be limited to the actual cost of the unused land tour services.
