Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation increase 7.2% in September, as compared with the same month of 2016 Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodations (holiday dwellings, tourist campsites, rural tourism accommodation and youth hostels) exceeded 12.9 million in September, 7.2% more than in the same month of 2016. Overnight stays by residents increased by 9.1% and those of non-residents did so by 6.1%. The average stay stood at 4.9 overnight stays per traveller. During the first nine months of 2017, overnight stays increased by 6.2% as compared with the same period of the previous year. Resident overnight stays grew by 6.3%, and those of non-residents did so by 3.6%. The average stay decreased 5.7% as compared with September 2016, and stood at 5.9 overnight stays per traveller. In September, 42.2% of the bedplaces available for holiday dwellings were occupied, 3.1% less than in the same month of 2016. Illes Balears reached the highest occupancy rate, with 85.3% of holiday dwellings offered. By tourist areas, the island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with 905,738 overnight stays. The island of Lanzarote registered the highest occupancy rate, with 90.1% of the holiday dwellings offered. Tourist campsites Overnight stays at tourist campsites registered an increase of 10.2% in September as compared with the same month of the previous year. Resident overnight stays grew by 8.7% and non-residents by 11.8%. During the month of September, 37.6% of the offered pitches were occupied, 4.3% more than in the same month of 2016. The weekend occupancy rate by pitch reached 38.6%, with an annual increase of 0.2%. 50.1% of overnight stays on tourist campsites were by non-residents travellers. Germany was the main country of origin, with 22.7% of overnight stays by non-residents, 14.5% more than in September 2016. La Rioja reached the highest occupancy rate, with 61.8% of the pitches offered. By tourist area, the Costa Brava was the preferred destination, with 754,186 overnight stays. The Costa Blanca reached the highest occupancy rate, with 65.3% of the available lots covered. The tourist sites with the highest number of overnight stays were Benidorm, Mont-Roig Del Camp and Salou. Rural tourism accommodation Overnight stays in rural tourism accommodation presented an annual increase of 17.9% in September. Resident overnight stays grew by 16.3%, and those of non-residents did so by 20.8%. In rural tourism accommodation, 20.6% of the bedplaces were occupied, with a 12.9% increase as compared to September 2016. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 31.7%, with an annual increase of 2.1%. Price indices The Holiday Dwelling Price Index (HDPI) increased 4.5%, as compared to September 2016. The rate for tour operators and travel agencies, which carried the greatest weight in the weighting structure for this month (49.1%), increased by 4.1%. The Tourist Campsite Price Index (TCPI) increased by 1.9% in the annual rate. The bungalow rate, which carried the greatest weight in the weightings structure in September (47.6%), grew by 1.8% as compared with the same month of 2016. The Rural Tourism Accommodation Price Index (RTAPI) registered a 3.6% increase in September. The weekend rate, which accounted for 52.5% of the total weight, increased by 3.7% in the annual rate. Illes Balears was the preferred destination, with over 11.0 million overnight stays (0.3% less than in September 2016). It was followed by Cataluña, with over 9.4 million overnight stays (and an increase of 5.4%) and Canarias, with 8.5 million, (an annual increase of 1.7%).
