ireland, england, france, & SPain aboard Sea cloud ii With Howard Nenner, Roe/StRaut PRofeSSoR emeritus in the humanities July 28-August 10, 2013

dear Smith alumnae, the fascinating history of Europe s Atlantic coast with fellow alumnae and Smith professor Howard Nenner on a ten-night cruise from Ireland to Spain aboard the elegant Sea Cloud II. Our voyage is book-ended by two great maritime cities, Dublin and Bilbao, with port calls along the coasts of southern England, Normandy, and the Aquitaine, and at the scenic harbor of La Rochelle. Learn about the intrepid Phoenician, Celtic, Viking, and Basque seafarers who were among the first to sail far out into the vast Atlantic Ocean, and about the epic naval battles that followed. Explore the role the Atlantic Ocean played in the history and development of Europe, from the Golden Age of Exploration to the D-Day landings of World War II. Also enjoy artistic accomplishments that span the centuries, from prehistoric cave paintings such as those in the Dordogne to the great pilgrimage site of Mont Saint-Michel and the cutting-edge Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. A cruise aboard the Sea Cloud II, one of the most elegant and luxurious vessels afloat, is unfailingly memorable. In the grand tradition of the world s finest sailing vessels, guests can experience the thrill of sailing beneath 30,000 square feet of billowing hand-set canvas. Throughout the cruise and ashore, sample the culinary diversity and acclaimed wines for which this part of the world is celebrated. Smith travelers will share this fascinating adventure with travelers from Yale, Princeton, MIT, and American Museum of Natural History. If you have any questions, or wish to make a reservation, please call Smith Travel at (800) 225-2029 or go to http://alumnae.smith.edu/travel. Best regards, Elizabeth Bigwood Director for Travel Alumnae Association of Smith College Study Leaders howard nenner is the Roe/Straut Professor Emeritus in the Humanities at Smith College, where he was a teaching member of the history faculty from 1968 until his retirement in 2006. He received his L.L.B. from Columbia University (1959) and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (1971) and practiced law in New York before entering academia. His research and writing have focused on the constitutional history of England, principally in the 17th century, with an outreach to legal history and the history of political thought.

Visit the picturesque Benedictine Abbey and the village that lies in the shadow of its walls at Mont Saint-Michel, a rocky islet buffeted by powerful tides between Normandy and Brittany. Also enjoy the fruits of the vine at a beautiful Bordeaux vineyard, the colorful market in Sarlat, and the fascinating Bayeux Tapestry, a unique historical chronicle (pictured on cover). Colonel Kevin J. Weddle, Ret., Professor of Military Theory and Strategy at the United States Army War College, is a veteran of Operations Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom. Col. Weddle has led groups of students to the battlefields and beaches near Normandy and has also led groups to World War I battlefield sites, as well as the battlefields of Waterloo, Agincourt, and Dunkirk. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton in history in 2003 and is the author of Lincoln s Tragic Admiral: The Life of Samuel Francis Du Pont. Ken Mowbray is a paleoanthropologist and research associate in the Division of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History. His research includes field work conducting paleontological and archaeological surveys and site excavations throughout Europe and Africa, and he has had the privilege of examining some of the world s greatest human fossil treasures, including a Homo erectus skull from Java dated to be at least two hundred thousand years old. His work has been published in Primate, Anatomical Record, Athena Review, and Nature. Adam Tooze teaches modern history at Yale. He is English by birth, was raised in Germany, and taught for 13 years at the University of Cambridge. He has published extensively on World War II, most notably his book Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy. Prof. Tooze is currently finishing a book about the Atlantic world in the era of World War I, traversing the history, amongst others, of Britain, Ireland, France, and the United States. At Yale he serves as co-director of the Institute for Security Studies, where the history and future of the Atlantic alliance is one of his central preoccupations.
