Montreal: A Unique, Vibrant Metropolis Worldwide Welcome In 2009, Montreal was named North America s leading host city for International Association Events. Best Fest The Montreal International Jazz Festival & the Montreal International Fireworks Competition are the largest festivals of their kind in the world. The Right Trek An Island? The city is located on the Island of Montreal in the Saint Lawrence River. It is the largest island in the Hochelaga Archipelago. Montreal boasts more than 350km of bike paths and over 200km of groomed cross country ski trails in winter. On the Lookout Mount Royal Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, who co-designed NYC s Central Park. The lookout offers beautiful views of the city and beyond. The Places You ll Go The Metro system was established in 1966. Each station was designed by a different architect with original artwork and themes. Maple Staple 85% of all maple syrup in the world comes from Quebec. Hockey History The first organized hockey team in the world, McGill University Hockey Club, was formed in Montreal in 1879. Remarkable Landmarks Much of Montreal s design identity is the result of two major events: Expo 67, the century s most successful World s Fair, and the 1976 Summer Olympics. Foodie s Paradise Montreal has the highest number of restaurants per capita in all of Canada. From traditional eateries to experimental hot spots, the city is a culinary destination. 6 Conference Announcement

Climate Montreal has a semi-continental climate, with a warm, humid summer and a very cold winter. In May, the average daily temperature is a high of 19 C ( 66F) and a low of 8 C ( 46F). Montreal tends toward a rainy spring with an average of 13 wet May days and a usual wind speed of 14km/hr (7.6kts). Language Quebec is the only officially French speaking province in Canada. However, the majority of Montreal residents speak both French and English, and a large portion speak a third language as well. It is very easy to access service in English nearly anywhere in Montreal, especially in the downtown core. Tipping Gratuities are seldom included in Canadian restaurants. Overall, wait staff are not paid very well and rely on tips. 15-20% on the total bill before tax is customary, less for poor service, more for exceptional service. Tipping is also customary, but not mandatory, for some other services such as taxi drivers and hotel concierges. Transportation from Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport - YUL TAXIS Taxi companies offer a rate from YUL to downtown Montreal for an average flat minimum charge of $40CAD, plus tip. Catch a taxi on the Arrivals Level near the central exit. 747 SHUTTLE SERVICE The 747 runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, between YUL and downtown. Disembark at the Mansfield stop and walk south to De la Gauchetiere street and the Hotel Bonaventure. A shuttle ticket costs $10 and can be purchased using debit, credit or cash at an automated STM ticket dispenser inside the terminal, or with cash (exact coin change only) on the shuttle bus, the shuttle bus ticket is also good for the following consecutive 24 hours. Monthly, Weekly, Unlimited Weekend, and 1- or 3-day STM passes are also accepted on the 747. Conference Announcement 7

Travelling Within the City Walking The area around Hotel Bonaventure is dense and easy to navigate on foot, however, there are several other options if you would like to explore more of the city. Taxis There are over four thousand taxi stands in the city, and its usually easy to hail a cab if there is no stand nearby. Cabs are generally reasonably priced and quick. Tipping is customary, though not mandatory. Bixis Bixi is Montreal s bicycle sharing system. Grab a bike at one of the hundreds of stations downtown and leave it at the closest station when you arrive at your destination. Available from April 15 to November 15, pay $5 for 24 hours of access to the system, or $2.95 for a single trip. Remember to keep each trip to 30 minutes or less, to avoid extra charges. Public Transit The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is the city s bus and metro system. It is safe and clean, spanning an impressively large portion of the city and surrounding areas. Single ticket ($3.25), multiple trip, 1 day, 3 day, and weekly passes are available, as well as other special fares. Visit www.stm.info for more information It is not necessary to have a car within Montreal city limits, and it is often more of an inconvenience than not. Parking can be difficult to find downtown, and streets are often closed due to construction, street fairs, and festivals. However, car rentals are easy to find throughout the city. 8 Conference Announcement
