INTERNATIONAL NEEDS CANADA Kenya 2018 Discovery Tour Itinerary and Information
Discovery Tour Itinerary INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL NEEDS KENYA International Needs Kenya works with local partners to provide hope for children and youth caught in the cycle of poverty. Working towards educating children and helping families to create a sustainable future. LIMURU Limuru is located near the Rift Valley about an hour from Nairobi. It is an agricultural and hilly area with many tea plantations. It is considered cold as the temperature can drop to 10 C. at night. There is a lot of unemployment among young people and International Needs Kenya works to be pro-active on issues of drug and substance abuse. Children are sponsored so that they can receive an education and end the cycle of poverty. Income generating projects are designed for youth in order to provide an income and self worth so that they may be responsible community members. KIBERA Kibera Slum is located centrally in Nairobi and houses just short of a million people in 2.5 kilometres. People migrate to the city with hopes of finding work but reality is much harsher and many land up living in Kibera. The Good News Clubs work with churches in Kibera to provide children with a hot meal, social intervention, skills training, and the Good News of salvation. It is a safe haven in the midst of chaos. KAWANGWARE Real Hope Community Project works with young street children in Kawangware Slum at a reception centre, where many street children are intercepted before they become dependent on glue sniffing. Glue sniffing helps to dull hunger and emotional pains and helps them sleep during cold nights. Social conditions are assessed and help is provided to find solutions at the root cause so that families can become healthy and life can become stable for the children. Success rates for early intervention are high. GILGIL Gilgil Special School is set up for children with physical and mental disabilities and/or learning difficulties. The school helps over 100 once forgotten children to access an education. The school is located in the grounds of the local township school. As well as equipping these vulnerable children with skills for life, the interaction with other children seeks to encourage understanding and acceptance in the community for future generations.
