TOURIST ACTIVITIES ASUNCION, MOTHER OF CITIES Asuncion was founded as a fort on August 15, 1537 by Juan de Salazar de Espinoza and quickly became the Amparo y Reparo de la Conquista (Refuge and Reparation from the Conquest), because it was the hub where the conquistadores departed on their quest for gold and silver in Upper Peru. It is also known as the Mother of Cities because expeditions left from there during the second founding of Buenos Aires and other population centers like Corrientes, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Santa Fe, Villarrica, and Jerez y Concepción del Río Bermejo. Another title Asuncion earned was the Cradle of the Liberation of the Americas because it was the site and origin of the Revolution of the Comuneros, which occurred long before the French Revolution. The capital of Paraguay, Asuncion, is situated on rolling landscape identified by its seven hills, which often mark the boundaries between the various neighborhoods. Its highest point does not exceed 120 meters above sea level and it measures 117 km2 in surface area. According to the last census, the capital population is 512,000 inhabitants; although including peripheral cities (Greater Asuncion), the population exceeds one million. Prior to the War of the Triple Alliance (1964-1870), Asuncion saw rapid architectural progress. However, it was occupied and plundered during and after the war and its development was stymied. This before and after can still be observed in the architectural contrasts that define the city's skyline. Today, Asuncion is a welcoming city, painted bright in the spring with lapacho and jacaranda flowers. It awakens nostalgia with its jasmine and orange blossoms, its old buildings and modern towers, neighborhood warehouses and surprising shopping malls, modest inns and brilliant hotels, typical cuisine and international gastronomy, craftwork, melodious native Guaraní language, romantic nights and refined shows, all serving to impregnate the visitor's mood with authentic pleasure.
