AUGUST 2012 819 Commercial Avenue 360.293.7911 info@anacortes.org www.anacortes.org The Newsletter of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce Volume 22 / Issue 8 calendar August 3,4,5 Anacortes Arts Festival Downtown August 17 Executive / Finance Meeting Chamber Office August 28 Visitor Information Center Volunteer Meeting Chamber Office Coming This Fall: September 15 Taste Anacortes October 5 & 6 Oktoberfest 10:30 am 9:00 am The 51st Annual Anacortes Arts Festival Bring the whole family and check out the live entertainment, food, and spectacular fine arts at this year s Anacortes Arts Festival, August 3 5, 2012. Stroll downtown Anacortes from 1st Street to 10th Street and experience the bustling of art enthusiasts, lively street musicians, and scrumptious food vendors. Approximately 250 juried booth artisans are attending this year s festival with various mediums to browse and buy. With all that artistic talent in one place there is bound to be something that intrigues you. The Experience Art Area starting on 3rd Street will render demonstrations of steamroller block printing, chainsaw sculpting, glass blowing, wood turning, weaving, painting, ceramics and sculpting. Bring the kids by the Youth Discovery Area to create and learn! The festival has two separate stages, the KPLU Stage and the Main Stage, where performers such as: The Jefferson Rose Band, The Bad Apples, and The Winterlings will provide a festive atmosphere. Do you feel that rumbling in your stomach? You ll find what you crave between between 2nd & 4th Street. Feeling tired? Stop and refresh at the beer garden right next to the Main Stage, or the wine garden, located near the KPLU Stage. The festival requires food vendors to use biodegradable products and environmentally responsible practices to contribute to our community s interest in Going Green. Special thanks to Shell Puget Sound Refinery for sponsoring the festival s recycling program. If you have any questions regarding the Anacortes Art Festival, please call: (360)-293-6211 or visit their website at www.anacortesartsfestival.com. Here it is mid July and the weather is still cool and sunny. Have you noticed all the wonderful events taking place every single week in town? I overheard a tourist saying to her friend They have something going on every week we try to get here at least a couple times every summer, it is such a happening town. What a wonderful thing to hear. As we are looking forward to the Anacortes Arts Festival, I would like to take time to mention the first Friday art walks also. Walking our town in the evenings with music, food and art is a wonderful pleasure and I invite you to join us. In my last letter I wrote about the Economic Development Association of Skagit County and the services they provide to any business at no cost from small business classes to individual coaching. I highly rec- ommend their services and have found them invaluable in so many ways. For those of use reluctant to jump in to blogs, Facebook etc., much of the mystery has been solved. Please call Kevin Hoult at EDASC 336-6114 for more information. Our new board will be placed in November; you will hear more from the nominating committee soon. Now is the time to be more active in the chamber and the many divisions, committees and taskforces. Your interests may lie in working with elected officials, or perhaps workforce development. You may be a marketing expert, or you may want to be an ambassador for the chamber, sharing with members and nonmembers your reasons for being a part of this great organization. Call the chamber and we will find the right spot for your talents and interests. The chamber is the voice of our business community; we are here to keep you in contact with those who represent you. In July, Senator Ranker and Representative Morris joined our governmental affairs division for a discussion on current relevant topics. Along with the Skagit Business Alliance, we are sending candidates a survey to find out their position on a number of topics. Finally, on October 11, you are invited to our Candidate s Forum at the chamber luncheon. Ensuring that our representatives understand the importance of the policies they make is paramount to our future. As a member of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce, you have access to many wonderful benefits and services. Take some time this week think about how you can be included. Commanding officer of NAS Whidbey, Captain Jay Johnston (left), invited community members from Oak Harbor, Coupeville and Anacortes aboard the Old Man IV on July 17 to view Whidbey Race Week. Chamber board members, Kristi Gabrielse, Kathy Larson, Mary Staley and Mayor Dean Maxwell joined Stephanie Hamilton for a relaxing afternoon on the water. Come see us for all your vehicle or vessel needs! Registration renewals, title transfers, disabled parking placards, monthly tonnage, trip permits, dealer work. 819 Commercial Ave Ste. Encouraging Words Remember to ask If you re in business in Anacortes, you re probably in sales. The best way to increase sales is to ask questions. Questions create rapport, focus attention and draw the prospect into the sales process. Answers help define needs and provide opportunities to overcome objections, as the sale becomes a close. Sales professionals follow repeatable steps to complete the sales cycle: 1. Establish and prioritize needs 2. Determine options and identify choices 3. Compare alternatives then overcome objections 4. Close the sale as a win/win 5. Deliver excellent service after the sale Using proven sales practices will help every business in good times and bad. Start the closing process by asking for the sale. Call Kevin, your free and confidential business adviser, at (360) 336-6114 to put those idle prospects to work. Interested in starting a new business or gaining market share by exporting? Call James at (360) 336-6114 to get started! Encouraging Words is a service of EDASC, enhancing our quality of life through the creation and preservation of healthy businesses and good jobs. Learn more at www.skagit.org. 5
