WELCOME TO AUTUMN Dear Friends, Winding Trails is ne f the largest emplyers f yung adults in the Farmingtn Valley. With a summer staff f ver 260 peple it is n small task t hire, train, and supervise these peple. One f the respnsibilities f ur fulltime staff is t train all f them. I am very happy t say I feel we d an excellent jb f sharing ur visin, stressing safety, and ensuring ur prgrams are well run. Early each summer I address ur seasnal staff and try and share my thughts abut Winding Trails and ur expectatins fr them. Making these talks infrmative, educatinal, and new can be a challenge. It is because f this reality that Winding Trails invests time and mney in sending ur full-time staff t lcal, state, and natinal cnferences in their respective fields f interest and respnsibility. They can then cme back and share this knwledge with their staff. Early this summer I utilized sme new knwledge I gained at the American Camp Assciatin s New England cnference when I spke with ur summer camp staff. Winding Trails Summer Day Camp is ne f the tp camps in the state. It has been named Best Day Camp by Hartfrd Magazine three f the last fur years. Many peple will say it is because f the beautiful facilities and the many activities we ffer. This is nt entirely true. Our success is really a result f the cnnectins ur staff make and the life skills we teach children. I have knwn this fr a lng time but this sessin I attended spelled it ut very clearly. Teaching kids hw t swim, play sprts, and make arts and crafts is great but these things wn t make a child a better persn r help them get a jb. The imprtant things we teach kids are life skills. We teach these skills while we are learning and playing thse activities. It is teaching children what it is like t be a gd winner and gd lser. It is abut willing t take risks, make mistakes, and wrk hard. It is learning abut patience, persistence, acceptance, and tlerance. I am happy and prud t say these are things we fcus n and this is really why ur camp is s ppular. I cncluded my talk with the camp staff by telling them that when they are asked what they are ding this summer I want them t tell everyne they are ding cnstructin this summer. They lked at me with a strange lk Really? And I emphatically said yes! Yu are building great kids! The summer was tremendus and it was great hearing frm s many f yu abut hw much yu like the new Bathuse Pavilin. This prject invlved hundreds f peple and it is just great t see that all the planning, building, and fundraising has paid ff. Thank yu t everyne wh helped make this prject happen. TRAILS TALK Dunning Lake HAPPENINGS 4 was welcmed by all as we added a new cmputer rental system, new lifejackets, and additinal standup paddlebards. The lake lked especially beautiful when accessrized with many bright clred watercraft. By mid-summer ur lifeguards respnded t 28 water rescues and 5 missing persns. Over 350 children were taught the imprtant life skill f swimming thrugh ur swim lessns and water safety instructrs. We als had ver 65 adults and children enjy ur sailing and intrductin t bating classes. The fun did nt end n the water. There were many great summer prgrams dwn n Dunning Lake beach with drp in events n Tuesdays and Thursdays and fun kid events such as Wacky Relays, Wet & Wild, Scavenger Hunts, and Olympics. The relcatin f ur Acustic Nights t the new Bathuse Pavilin was als a big hit. Overall attendance fr the summer was up slightly frm 2015 but nt at the levels f 2012. There were three days with attendance ver 2,000 peple. The new Bathuse Pavilin certainly helped with added picnic space but thse were sme very busy days. Weather is always the determining factr n ur verall summer attendance. AUTUMN NEWSLETTER PHOTO BY CARL VERNLUND PHOTOGRAPHY I t was anther great summer seasn at Dunning Lake especially with the inaugural seasn f ur new Bathuse Pavilin. There was nt a single day this summer that ne f ur members did nt make a cmment abut hw awesme the new bathuse is. In the early planning stages, there were a few peple wh were nervus abut hw the building wuld "fit in" and what it wuld lk like. We are happy t say the verwhelming respnse has been an emphatic Hurrah-A jb well dne. Mther Nature has als dne her part by bringing us sme much-needed water. Dunning Lake was dangerusly lw last summer and thrugh the fall. We estimated water levels were dwn 3-4 feet. At the time f this printing, the lake is almst back t nrmal levels. The water quality was als the best in decades with E-cli levels in the single digits and clarity f ver 20ft. Each summer Dunning Lake is a bustle with activity frm members swimming, picnicking, and scializing t swim lessns, drp in prgrams, and Acustic nights. Our waterfrnt staff did an excellent jb making sure the water was safe, children were taught the life skill f swimming, and plenty f aquatic crafts were available fr rent. NEWS AND VIEWS THE NEW BOATHOUSE PAVILION Best Seat in the Huse The Bathuse Pavilin fficially pened n June 3rd with the rain stpping right in time fr the ribbn cutting and dedicatin. The fllwing week, Acustic Night christened the first event in the pavilin. It was a beautiful evening f music and wnderful weather that was enjyed by a multitude f peple. The pavilin is a wnderful additin t Dunning Lake and has been a success the entire summer. The feedback has been very psitive. Many peple have cmmented n the aesthetics and the way it sits int the hill. They like the lk f the pavilin frm the gatehuse. The view sitting in a rcking chair has been called The best seat in the huse. We even heard that smene called it The Cathedral n the Lake. Peple have als cmmented n the way it catches the breeze especially n thse ht humid days. Winding Trails just lves that family and friends gather in the Bathuse Pavilin t share a meal, a drink, r just sme nice cnversatins. That is what being here is all abut. Peple enjying the utdrs. Develping life skills that are instructive and fun which better their lives. It is being part f a cmmunity that values family, diversity and tlerance while making new friends. In an increasingly turbulent wrld, ur best hpe fr the future is an investment in children and their ability t see and make this wrld a better place. It is nt a pavilin that will change the wrld, it is the peple that gather there wh believe we can create a better cmmunity. Save me a seat! TRAILS TALK A Bird s Eye View OF Winding Trails PHOTO: THEFIELDBROOKRESERVE.COM Mst f us just passively enjy seeing birds in ur backyards and hearing them sing. They are just part f the landscape. Unless f curse, yu have the Jsh Grbin f Rbins sitting n yur rf, singing t much, t lud, and t lng, but that s anther stry. Others lve birds s much that they becme birders. Birding is an art, a passin, a hbby, and an bsessin. Winding Trails lves birders because they see and hear what we cannt. They prvide the knwledge, data, and expertise n ur friends, the feathered bipeds f Winding Trails. The Cnnecticut Ornithlgical Assciatin has 437 birds listed that have been recrded in Cnnecticut and accepted by the Avian Recrds Cmmittee f Cnnecticut (ARCC). Winding Trails last fficial cunt was dne in 2006. That cunt netted 92 species f birds identified and recrded. We are happy t PHOTO: DODSON FARM WORDPRESS.COM reprt that we have a new vlunteer, Blair Wlchwski, wh will graciusly devte his free time t updating ur bird recrds ver the next year. He has already added anther five birds t the list and verified 50 frm the riginal list. Here is the latest swp f the birds at Winding Trails. This spring, a pair f Bald Eagles spent many a mrning fishing n Dunning Lake. They are attracted t the glden trut stcked fr the Children s Fishing Derby. We believe they are cmmuting frm Cantn. We have tw pair f Pileated Wdpeckers n prperty. They are beautiful, lud and drill big hles in ur trees. N babies sighted. We had eight Turkey Vultures cleanup after a small fish kill at the Lake this spring. Spring fish kills are a nrmal part f lake eclgy and we appreciate the help frm the birds. We have 36 bluebird nesting bxes n prperty and the Bluebirds have had a gd seasn despite the mre aggressive Tree Swallws cmpeting in a tight husing market. We believe that we have abut 6 t 8 different Red-tail Hawks n prperty. They are nt shy and will sit, swp and hunt almst anywhere n prperty. Fred and Ethel, the resident Canada Geese at Waltn Pnd had their nest raided and eaten fr the fifth seasn in a rw. Our hearts g ut t them. The culprit is believed t be the red fx that lives n the west bank f Waltn Pnd. We have fur Wd Duck bxes n prperty. We d ur cunt n hw many babies left the bx in January. Last year, we had 3 bxes that were used and we had 12 wd ducks fledge. Sctt Brwn is skeptical because he has yet t see ne. We have tw Barred Owls. One in the nrthwest crner and ne in the sutheast sectin f the prperty. They have a great call Wh cks fr yu? The Gld Cast is getting t crwded! Shrebirds are mving inland. Seen at Winding Trails, a Killdeer, Sptted Sandpiper and Herring Gull. A Ruby-thrated Hummingbird was seen feeding n the flwers up in the Nrth Meadw Lastly, Nature s lessn n tlerance. Seen feeding tgether under the bird feeders at Nature s Prch were tw Canada Geese, a Blue Jay, three Squirrels, a Grackle, tw Murning Dves, a Wild Turkey, tw Chipmunks, and a Cardinal. We all knw that the millipede that yu might find under a cverbard is nt as glamrus like a turtle r a hawk, r even cute like a chipmunk. But withut them breaking dwn plants and leaflitter, we wuld be walking thrugh leaf drifts five feet deep. They are als building nutrient rich sil which allws everything else t grw.
