Remarkable Experience Kigali City 8

Founded in 1907 as a small administrative outpost with limited linkage to the outside world, it has today grown into a modern metropolis the heart of the emerging Rwandan economy and the safest and cleanest capital city in the continent of Africa. Kigali is Rwanda s rapidly growing capital city and most important business centre in the country. Kigali has a vast range of accommodation options including five star hotels, boutique hotels, apartments and bed and breakfasts. Kigali Genocide Memorial The people of Rwanda embrace peace and reconciliation. They are committed to fight against discrimination and build the nation together. The memorials found throughout the country are moving testimonies in memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Inaugurated on the 10th anniversary of the Genocide, the Kigali Genocide Memorial is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims. The memorial serves to remember those who were killed and educate about the causes, reality and consequences of the Genocide. Through a series of exhibits, it also examines genocide in the 20th century. The Genocide Archive of Rwanda is also located at the memorial and is open to visitors. Visit www.kgm.rw to find out more about touring the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Camp Kigali Belgian Monument A small museum in Kigali City lies at the site of the massacre of 10 Belgian UN Blue Beret. At the onset of Genocide under the command of General Dallaire, they were deployed to guard the house of Prime Minister Agatha Uwilingimana. When the genocide began, Presidential Guard soldiers invaded the home, disarmed the Belgians and transported them to Camp Kigali where they killed them. The ten stone pillars memorialize the ten soldiers killed. Contact RDB to arrange a tour. Telephone: (+250) 252 57 65 14 or email reservation@ rwandatourism.com Natural History Museum - Kandt House Dr. Richard Kandt was the German explorer who embarked on an exploration of Rwanda in 1897 searching for the source of the Nile. He founded Kigali in 1908 as the centre for administration for German East Africa. In 2008 his historic residence was converted into the Natural History Museum which houses some really interesting information on Rwanda s flora, fauna, geology and biological history, along with a stuffed skeleton of a massive crocodile that terrorized a village in Lake Muhazi; a pair of shoes was found in its stomach. Nyamirambo Walking Tour Nyamirambo is a bustling multi-cultural commercial district in Kigali. This unique experience brings you right into the heart of the colours, noises and smells of urban Rwanda. Guided by the charming women of the Nyamirambo Women s Center (NWC), the tour allows visitors to experience the local market, West African tailors, hair salons, recording studios with local rap music and the Muslim quarter with its Arab influences. A delightful traditional Rwandan lunch in a home of one of your hosts is an optional extra. Arts & Craft There is an array of wonderful offerings of contemporary art studios; fashion; handcraft production and cooperative centres where you can watch Rwandan women weaving and beading and where you will be lost for choice in the many fabulous products on offer to purchase. Your shopping tour will be tailor-made to suit your choice and can include for example a visit to: Gahaya Links; Inema Contemporary Art Centre; Caplaki Craft Village; Uburanga Contemporary Art Centre; Tongo Art Gallery; Rwanda Nziza; Ikaze Showroom; Yego Arts; Umutako Iwacu; Ineza Womens Cooperative; Angaza Accessories Included is a stop off at one of Kigali s great coffee shops for a signature Rwandan coffee or tea. Nyarutarama Golf Course Experience Rwanda s great bird life whilst enjoying a round of 9 or 18 holes golf on the emerald green fairways of the Kigali Golf Club. Equipment, clubs and caddies are available for hire. 9

Akagera National Park 10

Founded in 1934, it is Rwanda s largest National Park. The park is home to lions, leopards, servals, hyenas, jackals and giraffes, large herds of buffaloes, impalas, zebras and several antelope species. Elephants often congregate around the lakes that are inhabited by more than 800 hippos as well as Nile crocodiles. complex of a dozen of lakes including Lake Ihema, which is located at an altitude of 1,292 m. It is the biggest lake in the park, it covers an area of about 90 square kilometers, with a depth varying from 5 to 7 metres depending on the area and the season. The eastern lake shore forms the border between Rwanda and Tanzania. Akagera National Park, located in the NorthEastern part of Rwanda is named after the Akagera River that flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into a labyrinth of lakes of which the largest is Lake Ihema. The forest fringed lakes, papyrus swamps, savannah plains and rolling highlands combine to make Akagera amongst the most scenic national parks anywhere in Africa. It has exceptional levels of biodiversity and forms the largest protected wetland in central Africa. In addition, Akagera is home to around 482 bird species including the endangered shoebill and endemic red-faced barbet. In 2015, the king of the jungle made its return to the Akagera National Park and with plans underway to reintroduce the rhinoceros; the park is inching closer to restoring its Big 5 status. The lake is rich in biodiversity, except fish, the lake is home to hippopotamus and crocodiles. As for birds, it has 550 species including unique species such as Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) and the Papyrus Gonolek (Laniarius mufumbiri). Among the endemic species, there are the Ibis (Threskiornithinae), Jacanas, Herons, Plovers (Charadriidae), Sandpipers, Malachite Kingfisher (Alcedo cristata), Hawk and many others. The lake is surrounded by large seasonal and perennial papyrus swamps. These wetlands are important habitats to the protected animals within the park: they do not only provide a permanent source of drinking water for the large mammals, but also form an important water bird sanctuary. Nyungwe National Park 12

Nyungwe has an impressive selection of activities on offer including the only canopy walk in East Africa, chimpanzee trekking, tea plantations, hiking and biking through the beautiful nature trails and bird watching. Located in the southwestern part of Rwanda, is the Nyungwe National Park. At an elevation of over 1600m, sounds and sights collaborate to create a magical experience as you journey through the majestic rainforest. The Nyungwe National Park holds the source of Africa s great rivers, feeding the Nile River on the east and the Congo River on the west. The long spanning (1000km) rainforest is acclaimed for its biodiversity and its rich population of endemic species. Its ecosystem is composed of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, and bog habitats. It is home to habituated chimpanzees and 12 other primate species including the habituated Ruwenzori Black and White Colobus and 75 different species of mammals. Bird watchers will rejoice as they encounter some of the 300 species dwelling within the confines of the forest. Within the Great Rift Valley lies Nyungwe Forest, acclaimed for its biodiversity and endemic species richness. Africa s largest protected mountain rainforest is an important habitat for many species, especially primates (13 species) and birds of which there are over 300 species. Butterflies and moths abound and the forest comprises more than 240 tree species with the canopy reaching 70 meters high in places, orchids and over 1,000 plant types. The Waterfall Trail This outstanding path has two starting points. You can begin at RDB reception or at Nyugwe Forest lodge. The first section of the trail in real meaning trails the road all the way to the car-park, passing through the rising and falling tea plantations scattered with forest patches that are worth seeing at close proximity with sights of silver monkeys plus other species of monkeys; these small patches of offer rewarding opportunities of bird viewing. The Trail later descends into the verdant forest, following the leveled contour paths all through a series of ravines trees covered with fern, and traversing a number of streams, prior to sharply descending into the bottom of the gorgeous yet small waterfall. Various Monkeys are frequently seen along this trail with the Angola colobus being the commonest while the sheer slopes permit perfect views o the canopy. This trail is additionally very rewarding with forest bird species, with an excellent opportunity of seeing the Albertine Rift endemics like the Rwenzori turaco as well as the yellow eyed black flycatcher. 13

Volcanoes National Park 14

The misty air in the Volcanoes National Park creates the perfect setting to experience Rwanda s distinct outdoor adventures, world reknowned trek of the critically endangered mountain gorillas, the golden monkey trek and a thrilling hike up the volcanoes. The Volcanoes National Park (VNP), located in the Northern Province of Rwanda, is home to one third of the world s remaining mountain gorillas. The park s name and majestic landscape is framed by the five volcanoes it houses: Bisoke, Muhabura, Karisimbi, Sabyinyo and Gahinga. The VNP is one of Rwanda s conservation epicenters, home to a number of international organizations and a coveted research ground for primates. Also within the VNP boundaries are the Buhanga Eco Park, a forest holding Rwanda s most intriguing folklore and the Musanze Caves, formed 62 million years ago after the last estimated volcanic eruption. In the heart of Central Africa, so high up that you shiver more than you sweat, wrote the eminent primatologist Dian Fossey, are great, old volcanoes towering up almost 15,000 feet, and nearly covered with rich, green rainforest - the Virungas. Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range - home of the rare mountain gorilla - and the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath. park, immersing trekkers in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colourful birds and chattering of the rare golden monkey, and littered with fresh spoor of the mountains elusive populations of buffalo and elephant. Through gaps in the forest canopy, the magnificent peaks are glimpsed, easily accessible and among the highest in Africa, beckoning an ascent. The bustling market town of Musanze has a memorable setting at the base of the Virungas. On the outskirts of town, the natural bridge a solidified lava flow is a fascinating relic of the volcanic activity that shaped this scenic area. Also within easy day tripping distance of Musanze are the seldom visited but lovely Lakes Burera, Ruhondo and Karago. Musanze town offers a good selection of upper-range and mid- range hotels as well as reasonably-priced small hotels and guest houses. An exhilarating trek through the cultivated foothills of the Virungas offers stirring views in all directions. Then, abruptly, the trail enters the national 15

Lake Kivu 16

Rubavu, hosts a waterfront access to the shores of the majestic Lake Kivu, one of Africa s greatest bodies of water. The regal Lake Kivu spreads over the western coast curving along the southern part of Rwanda, providing a calm and relaxing place to gaze into the daily sunset. The most remarkable locations in Rwanda to take part in this breathtaking exercise are found inside the districts of Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi. Rubavu often referred to by the name of its top destination. At only an hour away from Volcanoes National Park, Gisenyi town in, offers both attractive mountain scenery and sandy beaches. From the serene countryside valleys of Karongi, the radiant charm of the Lake Kivu can be seen in the quaint town of Kibuye. It has crystal clear water rocky beaches and many islands to discover. Kibuye s lakeshore is a favorite attraction to many Rwandans as it offers water sports, boat rides to the small islands, and community based tours to the tea plantation. watch in Gishwati Forest, visit Rosamond Carr / Imbabazi flower farm, go caving, take a Batwa community Dancing Pots tour, or a city tour of Gisenyi (Congo border posts and market, Poupeé de Atelier, Ubumwe Disabled Community Centre). From Crop to Cup Tea And Coffee Experiences Some of the world s best tea and coffee is grown in Rwanda; the high mountains, cool climate and rich volcanic soil result in award winning quality products. Experience growing and production processes from the nursery to plantations, pruning, picking, washing, drying and the many steps in-between to finally (in the case of coffee) roasting. Finish off with a tea or coffee tasting experience. Visit the beaches, the 1918 First World War Graves, tours of Bralirwa Brewery, and enjoy sundowners on the lake s shores and traditional night fishing experiences with local fisherman. Cultural Heritage Corridor 18

Each museum is strategically located, housed in the soil of the story it portrays. The sole exception is Kigali Genocide Memorial (KGM) which holds a collection of stories from across the country, hosted in the capital city for maximum impact and greater accessibility for international visitors. Rwanda has a rich history that precedes colonial time and a cross-country tour of our museums will reveal just that. Kigali Genocide Memorial The Kigali Genocide Memorial includes three permanent exhibitions, the largest of which documents the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. There is also a children s memorial and an exhibition on the history of genocide around the world. The education centre, gardens, and Genocide Archive of Rwanda contribute to a meaningful tribute to those who perished, and provide a powerful educational experience for visitors. When visiting, you will have the chance to pay respects to victims of the Genocide by purchasing a rose and laying it on the mass graves where more than 250,000 people are buried. Visit www.kgm.rw to find out more about touring the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Natural History Museum In close proximity to the city centre, visitors will enjoy a quick stop at the Natural History Museum, which is the former residence of Richard Kandt, the German explorer whose search for the source of the Nile led him to Rwanda in 1897. Presidential Palace Another historical landmark in Rwanda is the former Presidential Palace, located near the Kigali International Airport. It is the former state house of late President Habyarimana turned into a museum where the wreckage of the presidential jet shot down on April 6th, 1994 can be seen. The Cultural Heritage Corridor Located in Rwanda s southern province, the corridor showcases a number of Rwanda s important cultural and historical sites. The Royal Palace located in Nyanza district is the former home of King Mutara III Rudahigwa dating in 1931. It was turned into a museum where guests can explore traditional royal living. Also in Nyanza, is the Rwesero Art Museum, an art gallery where contemporary Rwandan artwork is displayed. In the neighboring district of Huye, lies the Ethnographic Museum, an impressive exhibit of Africa s finest collections of pre and post-colonial ethnographic, artistic and archaeological pieces. King s Palace Museum-Rukari Based in Nyanza, 88 km south of Kigali City, this was the residence of King Mutara III Rudahigwa and the Royal Palace that was traditionally built. This Palace offers a detailed look into Rwandan traditional seat of their monarchy, it is an impressive museum, restored to its 19th century state and made entirely with traditional materials. Recently the Long horned Traditional cows, known in Kinyarwanda as Inyambo were also introduced because of the fact that cows form an integral part of Rwandan Culture. On the neighboring hill of Mwima, one can also visit the burial grounds of King Mutara III and his wife Queen Rosalie Gicanda. 19
