SANDY SLOPES 1 The Official Newsletter of the Hilton Head Island Ski Club, Inc. VOL.XLVI NO. 2 SKI * PLAY * PARTY February 2017 President's Message Friends; Our trips have begun and I hope all you skiers will enjoy your trip out west. Those of us who are aged or injured envy you and wish we could be with you. When we come back y'all can relate your stories at our TGIF at NY Pizza on February 17th. Closer to home our club needs some volunteers to fill board positions for the coming year. These positions require some effort but believe me they are not full time positions. Our trip director and "Jill of all trades" Sue Crespan can certainly use some helpful club member to ease her burdens. So let's say that you are little uncertain about being a board member. Perhaps you would like to share some time and be an assistant to one of the Board members? If you are an electronics/communication whiz call Jim Nowak who leads our Media Team @ 843 290-5661 or contact me and I'll relay to Jim. Want to help out with Social Events then please reach out to Nina Dunn dunnna@hotmail.com. How about helping out with our trips? (Very much needed). Please contact Sue Crespan or reply to me. Sue can be reached at crespan@hargray.com. Ready for a Board position? Get in touch with John Nowacek who will be leading our recruitment team. jenowacek@earthlink.net. This is a long letter but any good club needs members to step up and serve. It is important to share the leadership of the club. Regards, Enjoy the trip SKI...PLAY..PARTY Peter F. 3 Trip Highlights for February 2017 Big Sky Ski Trip February 7th-14th: Well we are only a week away from our trip to Big Sky. We have 52 people all set to go. The snow is unbelievable in the west. We had a wonderful pre trip party with about 30 people attending. Plans have been made for a contest on the Nastar race track and for a funny hat contest. Temperatures in Big Sky right now are at 8 degrees, with snow expected everyday this week. The base is 48 on the upper mountain and 32 on the lower mountain. Our first day will have a welcome party planned by the hotel with two après ski parties during the week at places that have music and appetizers. Our awards dinner is all set for Bucks T4 which is the best restaurant in Big Sky. Our left over party will be enhanced by a case of wine provided by our new travel vendor. We have several people who will not be skiing and have been planning lots if extra things like dogsledding and or Mahjongg.

4 2018Snowmass Ski Trip February 6th-13th: Our Snowmass contract is complete. We will be either staying at the Stonebridge Inn or their condos at the Terrace House. The Stonebridge Inn just went under a complete renovation with modern hotel rooms in the style of a rustic lodge. It has a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, fitness room, sauna, internet access an onsite laundry, and ski lockers on site. Rooms also have a refrigerator. For those staying in the Stonebridge Inn a hot breakfast is included each morning. Those in the condos can add the breakfast for an additional charge. Pricing which includes breakfast, transfers, 5-day lift tickets and room is as follows: Stonebridge Inn- Seniors: $1349.03 per person All others: $1471.25 per person Terrace house: Seniors: $1045.32 per person All Others: $1167.54 per person

5 2017 Cruises: January 14 th -21 st on Holland America s ship the Eurodam round trip from Fort Lauderdale: Well we have just come back from this cruise. We had 8 people go on this and we had many days of great fun. The cruise offered multiple forms of entertainment each night- Classical music with string quartets, BB Kings with great bands, the standard show in the showroom which included the 2 nd runner up from the Voice, and these wonderful dueling piano players. The weather was perfect. We had a beverage package and also a dining package in the best dining room on the ship. We were overwhelmed with food. March 7th-21 st on Holland America s ship the Zaandam from Santiago Chile to Buenos Aires Argentina. We have six of us making this adventure. All of us are going to tour Santiago and do some wine tasting before boarding the ship. We will be seeing many penguins and fjords as we make our way around South America. Two days will be spent in Iguassu Falls after the ship lands in Buenos Aires. The falls are about 2 ½ miles long and border Brazil and Argentina. Our final stop will be spent in Buenos Aries in the Palermo district which is the in spot now in the city. October 7 th -20 th : Montreal to Fort Lauderdale on Holland America s ship the Veendam. People have started signing up for this cruise. Right now Delta has a deal to fly to Montreal from Savannah for $161.00. This looks to be a fun cruise starting in the wonderful city of Montreal during leaf peeping season. We spend two days in Quebec and cruise up the St Lawrence Seaway. We visit Halifax, Prince Edward Island, Bar Harbor Maine, Boston New York, Charleston and finally Fort Lauderdale. Details of this cruise have been sent out. We have group pricing for this trip and you may signup now: To sign up please contact Grace Van Brunt at Valerie Wilson Travel 843-341-8911. Cruises for 2018: July 8 th -22 nd : Roundtrip Amsterdam on the Koningsdam. This trip travels through the fjords of Norway to the Arctic Circle. One of the wonderful spectacles of this trip is the sight of the aureole borealis. A fun side trip is lobster fishing. This is Grace Van Brunt s favorite cruise. Pricing starts at $3199.00 for this two week cruise. We have group pricing and you can sign up for this now.
