SALFORD QUAYS FIRST REFURBISHED DEVELOPMENT A GRADE II LISTED BUILDING ONE OF SALFORD QUAYS MOST SIGNIFICANT PROPERTIES Salford Quays once constituted Britain s third largest port and now is a thriving business location.
SALFORD QUAYS AS PART OF THE MANCHESTER REGION, SALFORD QUAYS IS A PLACE THAT HAS UNDERGONE A VAST AMOUNT OF DEVELOPMENT OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS. The famous docks, part of Manchester Docks, were opened on 21st May 1894 by Queen Victoria, and spanned an expanse of 120 acres of water and 1000 acres of land. At the height of its success, this port became the third busiest in Britain, heralding a period of great industrial and commercial expansion in Greater Manchester. In the 1970s, containerisation and changing trade patterns caused a rapid decline of activity at the docks. By 1982, Manchester Docks had fully closed down, and over 3,000 jobs were lost. The council then purchased the area in 1984, thus marking the start of the docks brand new development plan, which was published a year later. This plan aimed to create a new quarter within Manchester, regenerating canals, roads and access route to provide a high quality environment where people would be encouraged to live and work. Since then, the development of Salford Quays has passed a number of milestones from the formation of the development plan to the completion of the Lowry project and, most recently, the expansion including MediaCity UK. This new development is a vibrant waterside community of workers, residents, students and visitors, and also a new home for the BBC and ITV, as well as many other well-known businesses. Salford Quays has now been transformed into Greater Manchester s 7 mile waterfront, including bars, restaurants, residences and renowned businesses, as well as internationally distinguished venues such as the Lowry, Imperial War Museum North and Manchester United Football Club, all of which are linked by landscape walkways along the quayside.
