First Interregional event from the Heritprot project, on Fire Risk Prevention and Improvement of the Fire Extinction Systems of the Historic Town Centers of Cities named World Heritage 26-28 April 2012 La Laguna, Tenerife - Spain

Over the last two decades, fires at World Heritage Sites have presented special challenges to Fire and Rescue Services worldwide, not only because of the loss or damage of historical value, but also because of the difficulties in fire-fighting and rescue. These sites have a permanent urban activity submitted to conflicts between the conservation values of the past and solving the needs of today. UNESCO recognizes outstanding urban status as a repository of universal culture of its buildings, monuments, tradition, history but the maintenance is of the owner s responsibility, mostly municipalities, often with very low budget. Some of these cities have a special plan or specific protection measures for historical elements. Nevertheless, in those plans there is usually no specific section regarding fire prevention and protection issues. In this context, the Tenerife s Consortium for Risks along with other public authorities and firefighting and civil protection institutions from Cities declared World Heritage Sites from 9 EU countries, including Norway are implementing a European project HERITPROT - to promote the prevention of fire risk in the historic centers of European cities declared World Heritage Site. Representatives from these institutions are working jointly to find solutions in this field that could be transferred to their territories according to their needs. Within the HERITPROT project, on 26-28 of April of 2012 the Tenerife s Consortium for Risks and its partners across Europe are organising a seminar in La Laguna, Tenerife, concerning Fire Risk Assessment, Fire Safety and Protection on historic town centres, which will highlight European regional development around fire risk prevention at historic town centres of cities named Word Heritage Sites. As a key Institution in this field, we kindly invite you to participate and attend our event. I believe that many of issues tackled at this event can be of considerable interest and importance to you. The event will be attended by a high number of senior politicians, EU and national technicians and experts and stakeholders with a stake in Fire Risk Prevention and Heritage Management. It will be promoted to journalists for media coverage both before and after the event. Yours sincerely, Mr. Carlos González Segura President Tenerife s Consortium for Risks
