Director s Message! As director I have been blessed with the best board of directors one could ask for. Most of you that were at our annual picnic this year know I was out of town and not able to attend, so first I want to thank you for making sure this event was such a success. Next I want to thank all of you that brought your Buick for display. And last thank the rest of you that attended. I understand that all of us have other obligations that need to be taken care of and may not be able to attend these functions. To myself, and the others that were not able to attend thank you for continuing your support in our club. Read your newsletter for upcoming events. I hope to see you at our next meeting on August 19. ~Sheridan Bishop III Desanka Apostolovic 7/20 Lois Gilliland 7/11 Lori Kredit 7/10 Debbie Sweeney 7/26 Additional Information at http://www.silveradodays.com/uploads/forms/carshow.pdf and in the August Running Board 2

Parker s Buick! In the summer of 1961, my high school buddy and I took out the back seat of his 1953 Kaiser, loaded it with a lawn mower and edger and set off to mow the yards of a retired gardener s clients. One of those, an independent and spirited widow, was Millie Parker who lived on Park St. in Bellflower. Her husband died soon after they bought their 1937 Buick Century in which she still drove her lady friends to the Women s Club. From that day on I looked forward to mowing her yard and looking at that Buick. Later, after getting my driver s license, she allowed me to take it to be serviced at the local station.! Fast forward to 1967, I had just gotten out of the Army, and I went to visit her. She said, Where have you been? I said, You know where I have been. Why? She replied that she was not going to renew her license anymore and I could have the Buick. That afternoon we went down to the Auto Club in Bellflower, paid the fees, and I was now the owner of the 37 Century, 4 doors, dual side mounts with a trunk back.! Fast forward to 2005, I had always kept this car up so that I could date my wife, ride in the back seat for our wedding, and let others use it for graduations and weddings. My goal was to restore the car as I approached retirement. 2005 was the year the disassembly began. My son, Chad, was now 24 and between us we took it down to the bare frame. From then on it was clean, paint, and fabricate.! Parker had told me about some of the experiences with the car. She befriended a Japanese family who lost their business in Bellflower due to WWII relocation. She filled the Buick with their belongings and took them to their internment location. This did not win her friends at that time. On disassembly of the rear passenger door, out fell a post card addressed to that family. It must have fallen between the glass and the inner upholstery panel. Also inside the door was a round shiny token of the 1939 California World s Fair. Another surprise was discovery of an old newspaper inserted between the headliner and the roof. Could there been a slackard on the assembly line?! 2012 and the painted body parts are out of the bedrooms and hanging on the car. Each piece was painted separately since the body shop did not want to be caught painting a whole car with paint that was matched to the original color. LeBaron Bonney interior was installed.! 2014 Lori and I went to the Buick Picnic at Irvine Park. This was the first trip out of Anaheim for the car. I need some carb adjustments, but it was a good outing and we look forward to more.! Nov. 1936 was the date that it came off the assembly line. Parker owned it 30 years, and we are going on owning it for 47. I am still amazed at God s goodness to us when I open the garage door and see our wedding car in the garage after all these years. ~Norm and Lori Kredit, 1366 4
