School of St Jude March 207 Newsletter Another container avoids becoming a whale hazard! Yes, once again Lloyd Fleming and the other amazing folk at Rotary Club of Rocklea, Brisbane, collected vital goods, packed them and shipped off a massive container that arrived intact it was Christmas in March for us! Page 3 Mixed Emotions in the Library - Yippee, books! yippeeeeeeuw, cataloguing... In the next two years we will be fitting out three more libraries so are desperate for good books fiction and non-fiction and good resources for primary & secondary school students. Many thanks to Jane Kennedy for ensuring the container had the books we needed and to everyone who contributed so many wonderful books you should see how much they are loved!
Thanks to Tom and Judy Wagner from the USA, the school has been able to purchase 160 good second hand computers to be used on the current campus, the new campus and all the boarding houses. If they ve survived two months at sea, a month on the hot dock in Dar es Salaam and about 15 hours on the back of a truck across a chunk of Tanzania, then they should survive the pounding they get from Std 3E! When a container lands, every pair of hands within cooee is available this 40 foot container was offloaded in an hour! School of St Jude March 207 Newsletter Page 4 The container spits out computers like alien eggs in a sci-fi movie! Now we understand why flat screens are so popular! Even the smallest hands did big work. A nest of vipers -like tangle of electrical cords will keep our IT department busy for a few days
School of St Jude March 207 Newsletter Page 5 The alien pods incubate awaiting small hands to give them life... With almost 200 new students every year, we are only just keeping up with the infrastructure needed. Here, Venancia and Amer, of the school s IT department, grapple with the massive amount of cabling that seemingly strangles the school before it s brought under control by these amazing people with different brains to me!
School of St Jude March 207 Newsletter Page 6 A few more weeks and the clatter of little fingers will be heard... Within the month we will open two more 30-seat computer internet labs. March Visitors This great group of university students from the USA were some of the many visitors who dropped by this month. During their two day visit they enjoyed watching the daily routine and catching the students at work and play.
School of St Jude March 207 Newsletter Page 7 Our budding Bacons and Bellocs battle it out with biros! It is so thrilling, to realise we are at a stage where our students are confident and competent enough to enter interschool academic competitions. Last week, a group travelled to another English medium school in the district to pit their imaginations and grammar skills against others in their age groups in an Essay Competition. As this was their first experience of this type of competition, they really did the school proud. There will be some Tanzanian literary stars of the 21st Century in the making here! Looking forward to catching up with many of you around Australia in a few weeks! Lots of hugs! Gemma
