PEACEBUILDER TRIP TO IRELAND JAN 11-18 2015
Sunday January 11 th : Depart USA for Ireland Monday January 12 th : Arrive Dublin Airport & meet with group representatives. Travel to Dublin Hotel for breakfast & check in.. 2pm-5pm. Walking tour of Dublin City including National Museum, General Post Office (1916 Rising), Garden of Remembrance, Customs House & Famine Scultptures. 7pm Reception and Launch of CRCC Global Peacebuilders Project at Club Na Muinteoiri, Parnell Square. Group will be the guests of the Irish National Teacher s Organization for keynote address by a major participant of the Irish Peace Process. Official Launch of CRCC Peacebuilder Ireland Project. Tuesday January 13th Dublin to Donegal Depart Hotel at 10am. 10.30am Visit to Kilmainham Jail. Onwards to the Boyne Valley for a fully guided tour of the Brú Na Bóinne site, including a visit inside one of the chambers at Newgrange or Dowth. These burial chambers pre-date Stonehenge, and it s a must-see visit. Lunch at the Newgrange restaurant. Continue towards Donegal- Stop at Peace Statue, Belturbet (between Cavan in the Republic of Ireland and Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. The journey from the East of Ireland to the West also goes in and out of Northern Ireland we will cross the border at Belturbet and again at Beleek. We arrive at our accommodation in time for dinner, and a fun icebreaking session at Donegal Adventure Centre. Cross-border initiatives in peace building have often involved effective team-building activities and instructors at the Donegal Adventure Centre will lend their experience and provide a fun session. The evening will conclude with an informal reception at the 51 bar, with traditional music and a welcome from the people of Bundoran. The accommodation and base for the trip is the Atlantic Apartotel, Bundoran. The Atlantic Apartotel offers self-catering apartments above a bar/reception and conference area. Your accommodation includes a continental breakfast each morning.
Wednesday January 14 th Day Trip to Derry City Morning Lecture- Northern Ireland 1968-2010. Our field Trip will be a memorable one: after a morning lecture, we travel to Derry City, in Northern Ireland. We will visit the Bogside area, site of Bloody Sunday & Civil Rights Marches. We will meet relatives of the Bloody Sunday massacre at the Free Derry Museum. We will see the famous Bogside Murals, once symbolizing aggression in the community, but now symbolizing peace & reconciliation. Lunch at Gasworks Community Centre, Bogside. Here, there is a large exhibition of the political history of Northern Ireland including internment, the Long Kesh Hunger Strikes and the campaign to bring about a Peace Process. After lunch, we will do a walking tour of the medieval Derry City walls, and the city herself. We will meet with Don Mullan, who will talk about his experiences in collecting the evidence of Bloody Sunday in his book Eyewitness, which eventually led to a second inquiry and an apology from the British Prime-Minister. In the evening, we will return to Bundoran for dinner and an Irish ballad session. Thursday January 15 th Two options available today: our peacebuilder sessions will be run by Professor Jonathan Golden from the CRCC, with representatives of crossborder organisations from either side of the border. Alternatively, for those interested in the history and culture of the border counties, Niamh will be leading a trip to Yeats Country, including Ben Bulben and Drumcliff, Parkes Castle, Glencar Waterfall and a visit to the Yeats Society in Sligo Town. A visit to the Model Art Gallery is also an option.
Launch of the Drew Transatlantic Conference Thursday 15 th January. At 7pm on Thursday evening, all Peacebuilders are invited to the Opening of the Drew University Transatlantic Connections Conference, with Keynote speaker, humanitarian Don Mullan. The evening will include an opportunity to meet many local people from the border communities and counties, and entertainment will be provided by The Henry Girls. Friday 16 th Transatlantic Conference Peace Panels. 10am-5pm Peace Panels will be chaired by Professor Jonathan Golden and our young peace builders are invited to present. All Peacebuilders on this trip may submit papers for presentation to the Peace Panels if they wish. All Peacebuilders on the trip are welcome to all panels at the Drew Transatlantic Connections conference, which will also include panels on Literature, Irish History, Popular Culture and Irish Music. On Friday Evening, the keynote speaker will be Professor Christine Kinealy, and the evening will conclude with a performance of Irish Theatre and live acoustic performance by guitar virtuoso, Johnny Gallagher. Saturday 17 th : Field Trip to Belfast. Today we will travel to Belfast City and visit the communities of the Falls Road, the Shankhill Road, and the Belfast Peace Wall. We will meet representatives from Loyalist and Nationalist Communities and discuss the conflict resolution in Belfast. We will stop off at Stormont, the Belfast Shipyards & have some free time in the beautiful city centre. Evening: We return to Bundoran for the final Gala evening to conclude the Peace Building Program and Conference. The Saturday Keynote will be by poet, historian and activist Theo Dorgan. We will also have an award for best presentation by a young peacebuilders, and the CRCC will announce the recipient of the 2015 Peacebuilder Gala to be held in New Jersey in March 2015. DEPART FROM BUNDORAN ON SUNDAY 18 th JAN We will have you in Dublin Airport at approx. noon on Sunday 18 th Jan, or if you re staying on in Dublin City, we will have you there approx. 12.45pm. Please give yourself at least two hours minimum to check in for your flight.
