BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB Sicily by Sail: Valletta to Naples Aboard Sea Cloud Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Irresistible Sicily, that stepping stone between Europe and Africa, bears traces of the many civilizations that have conquered her, from the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans, to the Arabs, Normans, and more. Please join me in October of 2018 to circumnavigate this stunning island aboard the legendary sailing yacht Sea Cloud. Autumn, when the heat and crowds of summer are gone, is the perfect time to discover Sicily s pearls of antiquity aboard this four-masted barque. I am delighted to be leading my third program for Travel with The Met. Because of my passion for medieval art, I especially look forward to our day in Palermo, whose magnificent mosaics stand as testament to the golden age this city experienced in the 12th century. My talks on this period will be complemented by lectures from Harvard Professor David Aguilar and other distinguished experts. Embark Sea Cloud in Valletta, Malta, and sail to Syracuse, once Athens rival in wealth and culture. Discover its well-preserved Greek and Roman theaters and visit a Baroque palazzo whose owner will welcome us for a tour. Explore the seven temples of Agrigento during an astonishing afternoon. From Trapani, choose an excursion to the medieval hilltop town of Erice or to Mazara del Vallo, home to the 2,400-year-old Dancing Satyr, a spectacular seven-foot bronze statue. Palermo, Sicily s capital city, beckons with its extraordinary Norman-Arab-Byzantine influences, while Lipari, inhabited continuously for 7,000 years, boasts an archaeological museum that is a must-see. Conclude in Naples, or remain in Italy for the optional postlude. With her billowing sails, rich mahogany, and gleaming brass, Sea Cloud has been setting the standard for luxury sailing since 1931. Her elegant appointments, fine dining, impeccable service, and intimate size make her the ideal ship for this splendid itinerary. I hope you will join me on this perennially popular voyage, which was named one of 50 Tours of a Lifetime by National Geographic Traveler, to discover the fascinating history and spectacular beauty of Sicily. Sincerely, C. Griffith Mann Michel David-Weill Curator in Charge of the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters The Metropolitan Museum of Art BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB Traveling with You C. Griffith Mann Dr. C. Griffith Mann is The Metropolitan Museum of Art s Michel David-Weill Curator in Charge of the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters. He is responsible for the medieval collections and curatorial staff in The Met s main building, and directs the staff and operations of The Cloisters, the branch of the Museum dedicated to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. Dr. Mann received his B.A. in art history and history from Williams College, and his Ph.D. in medieval art from The Johns Hopkins University. A specialist in the arts of late medieval Italy, he has published on civic patronage, painting, and devotion in Tuscany. Dr. Mann has curated exhibitions on the medieval cult of relics, the art and archaeology of medieval Novgorod, and French manuscript illumination of the 13th century. Departure Monday, October 1 Depart the U.S. on an overnight flight to Malta. Valletta, Malta / Sea Cloud Tuesday, October 2 Arrive in Valletta and gather for lunch before transferring to the awaiting Sea Cloud. Enjoy a bon voyage toast on deck as we sail out of the historic harbor en route to Sicily. L, D Syracuse (Sicily) Italy Wednesday, October 3 Splendid Syracuse, once the largest city in the ancient world, was a formidable rival to Athens. Discover the cathedral built on the ruins of the Temple of Athena and admire dramatic, wellpreserved theaters where Aeschylus plays were performed. By special invitation, Barone Beneventano will welcome us to his Baroque palazzo for a tour and light refreshments. In the early evening the captain hosts a welcome reception and dinner. B, L, R, D Porto Empedocle / Agrigento (Sicily) Thursday, October 4 Pindar, one of the greatest classical Greek poets, called Agrigento the most beautiful city built by mortal men. Tour the nearby ruins of the Valley of the Temples to discover why. The Temple of Concord, perhaps the best-preserved Greek temple in the world, inspired the UNESCO logo. B, L, D Trapani / Segesta (Sicily) Friday, October 5 Explore Segesta s splendid Doric temple, strangely unfinished, whose columns are said to produce organ-like tones on windy days. Later you may visit either Erice a hilltop medieval town whose Norman castle sits atop the ruins of a temple of Venus or Mazara del Vallo, to see its 2,400-year-old, seven-foot bronze statue the Dancing Satyr, rescued from the sea by fishermen in 1998. B, L, D Palermo (Sicily) Saturday, October 6 Sicily s capital, Palermo, was the envy of Europe under the Normans, whose enlightened rule produced the golden mosaics we will see in the 12th-century Palatine Chapel, described by Guy de Maupassant as the most surprising religious jewel ever dreamt of. After lunch on board, drive to Monreale to admire the brilliant mosaics in the magnificent Norman cathedral before a special reception at Palazzo Gangi, where the ballroom scene in The Leopard was filmed. B, L, D Lipari (Aeolian Islands) Sunday, October 7 Early this morning we sail through the Aeolian archipelago, volcanic islands off the north coast of Sicily. Tender ashore to Lipari, which has known uninterrupted occupation since the Neolithic Age. The Archaeological Museum within the fortress walls boasts a superb collection of artifacts, including extraordinary masks from this and other islands. B, L, D At Sea Monday, October 8 Experience the thrill of sailing aboard our fine ship, attending lectures and delighting in the grace and romance of a bygone era of travel. B, L, D Naples, Italy / Return Tuesday, October 9 Disembark Sea Cloud in Naples this morning and transfer to the airport for the flights home, or remain for the optional postlude. An optional three-night postlude in Sorrento is offered from October 9-12. The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Arrangements Abroad. Her original owners, heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and financier E. F. Hutton, desired a craft like no other. They spared no expense to create the largest private sailing ship ever built and in 1931, Sea Cloud was launched. In the 30s and 40s, as she sailed the world, the four-masted beauty was host to leaders including Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Now carefully restored by a team of master craftspeople, this great lady continues to offer elegant quarters, fine dining, and impeccable service. Praised by the world s most discerning travelers, Sea Cloud consistently receives high rankings from Condé Nast Traveler.
